I’m a seasoned traveler and in this guide, I share the best places to visit in June, both in the USA and internationally.

June weather is perfect for a relaxing beach vacation or an epic mountain hike. Festivals celebrate everything from contemporary music to time-honored traditions. You may even find yourself transported to places that feel more like another planet.

10 Best Places to Visit in June in the USA

San Diego, California

Experience the best of SoCal’s beach culture in America’s Finest City.

San Diego embodies the best of Southern California: perfect weather, sandy beaches, awesome surfing, and more. Urban sophistication is another highlight. Hip breweries, fascinating museums, and chic boutique shops stand on nearly every corner. This is especially true in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The fun doesn’t stop further from the city center, either. Each of the surrounding beach towns has something unique to offer.

Explore the rugged beauty near Torrey Pines. Indulge in the upscale atmosphere of La Jolla. Or, spend the day surfing in La Solana. Oceanside is also excellent for surfing or a stroll on its famous pier. There are also great hiking trails further inland.

Alaska

Embark on the adventure of a lifetime in the Last Frontier.

🛎️ Where to Stay | Things to Do

Adventure in Alaska goes into full gear in summer. The Last Frontier’s famous wildlife — furry, finned, and feathered — are out and about. The weather is also warm (for Alaska) and the days are long, so there’s plenty of time to explore the endless places to visit

There’s no better place to enjoy the midnight sun than at the festival of the same name in Fairbanks. Further south of Fairbanks, Denali is a must-see. You’ll first catch sight of the soaring peak from miles away. The full majesty, though, can only be experienced up close.

Alaska’s southern coast offers glacier and wildlife-viewing cruises. The rainforests around cities like Sitka and Ketchikan are perfect for hikes. This is true (and maybe even more so) on rainy days. The fog adds a mist-ical atmosphere. The fishing here is also legendary.

Chicago, Illinois

Wind down after a day of urban adventure on the Windy City’s little-known beaches.

🛎️ Where to Stay | Things to Do

Chicago has tons to see and explore, including some things you might not expect from the Windy City! The Chicago Sports Museum is the best place to learn all about the city’s illustrious sports legacy. The Magnificent Mile is the go-to place for shopping.  The Willis Tower offers the best panoramic views by far.

Locals are friendly and the city is surprisingly walkable for a major American city. The Riverwalk is a favorite trail among locals and visitors, lined with excellent restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Chicago also has some great beaches. These secret strands are popular with locals but aren’t on most non-residents’ radars.

Nashville, Tennessee

There’s always something going on in Music City, but summer’s when the party goes into full swing. The CMA Fest, for one, brings together some of the biggest names in country music. Bonnaroo Music Festival incorporates several other genres. There are plenty of venues with smaller nightly concerts as well.

Nashville’s food scene is just as lively as its musical counterpart. The local trademark is hot chicken, and good old-fashioned American grub is never hard to find. There’s also a variety of cuisines from around the world ranging from spicy Thai food to fine French cuisine.

Nashville’s not just for grown-ups, though. There are tons of great activities for families. June is the best of the summer months because, while warmer than May, temperatures haven’t yet reached their highest point.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

Explore America’s most famous mountain range at this stunning national park.

🛎️ Search for hotels near Rocky Mountain National Park

Few places are as iconically American as the Rocky Mountains. Breathtaking beauty is commonplace in Colorado and there’s seemingly no end to the outdoor adventures you could have in its epic Rocky Mountain National Park.

Hiking trails take you to innumerable alpine lakes, majestic waterfalls, and unparalleled panoramas. Scenic drives like Trail Ridge Road are a great alternative if you don’t have the time or energy for a full day of hiking. Camping out only adds to the adventure. You can also find accommodations in Estes Park, which suit every taste and budget.

Boston, Massachusetts

Take a deep dive into American history and New England culture.

🛎️ Where to Stay | Things to Do

Boston is one of the best places to explore American history. Faneuil Hall and the Boston Harbor are two of the most famous historical sites here. Other highlights include the New England Aquarium (one of the best places to bring the kids) and Fenway Park (why not catch a Red Sox game?).

Boston is also famous for its culinary scene. Restaurants offer traditional New England favorites like oysters and clam chowder, but there’s also a wide array of international eateries.

There are several great day trip options to famous places from American history. Retrace the voyage of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, inquire into the history of the witch trials in Salem, or simply take a stroll by the sea at Cape Cod.

Seattle, Washington

Discover why the Emerald City is the crown jewel of the Pacific Northwest.

🛎️ Where to Stay | Things to Do

Seattle is famous (or maybe infamous) for its gloomy weather, but the summer tends to have better weather. A clear day is perfect for taking in the view from the Space Needle — sunset is the best time! You could also shop at Pike Place Market, indulge in amazing seafood at the city’s best restaurants, or jam out at the Museum of Pop Culture.

You’re unlikely to find wizards in the Emerald City. You will, however, find a treasure trove of awesome breweries, museums, and much more. Further afield, there are fantastic hikes, including several in Mt. Rainier National Park, one of the highlights (and high points) of the PNW.

The islands in Puget Sound are one of the most distinctive features of the Seattle area. Bainbridge Island and Vashon Island are both excellent getaways from the urban hustle and bustle.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

Follow in the footsteps of America’s first pioneers in the most famous corner of the Appalachian Mountains.

🛎️ Search for hotels near the Great Smoky Mountains

Back East, especially in the Great Smoky Mountains, there’s a different kind of epic beauty. The mountains may not pierce the sky but their rolling, forested slopes have a grandeur all their own. The dense forests offer cool shade, and there’s no shortage of trails to be explored.

There are some amazing scenic drives in the area, too. The Blue Ridge Parkway just north of the park is one of the most famous scenic drives in America. Clingmans Dome is one of the best places to visit on foot for panoramic views.

Visitor centers across the park offer a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. They are the perfect place to visit for anyone who loves early frontier history.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

Soak up the sun and the best of East Coast beach culture at the Outer Banks.

🛎️ Search for hotels in Outer Banks

The East Coast also has its own beach culture — different, but complementary to the West Coast. The Outer Banks, one of North Carolina’s top destinations, is the best place to experience it. White sandy beaches stretch for miles. Many places offer uncrowded and almost wild natural beauty.

Speaking of the wild, the far reaches of the islands are famous for their feral horses. The region is also noteworthy for Kittyhawk, where the wild dreams of the Wright brothers first “took wing.”

Beach towns here offer all the amenities you could want in a vacation spot. Restaurants, shops, and hotels line the boardwalks. You can also rent boats, surfboards, and just about anything water sports-related here, too.

US Virgin Islands

Visit the Virgin Islands for the ultimate tropical getaway within the borders of the United States!

🛎️ Where to Stay in St. John, St. Thomas | Things to Do in St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John

The US Virgin Islands are one of America’s territories and are true hidden gems with plenty of places to explore.

Here, white sandy beaches await, lapped by the sapphire blue seas — which also have all kinds of adventures in store! You could snorkel with sea turtles, spend the day sailing, or sit by the beach and sip on a margarita or some rum.

There are tons of awesome hiking trails winding through the hills and forests further inland. June is one of the best times to see all of this because it’s part of the dry season. Visiting in early June is best. Hurricane season starts in July, so the end of the month may get a little wetter.

9 Best Places to Visit in June (International)

Cappadocia, Türkiye

Fantastical rock formations, ancient cave cities, and hot air balloon rides at sunset make Cappadocia feel like another world!

Cappadocia in central Türkiye is one of those places on Earth that feels more like another planet. Jagged pinnacles and columns of rock jut into the sky. Ancient cave cities lie carved inside cliff faces. Local millennia-long history remembers everyone from the Hittites to today’s Turkish population.

Exploring the ancient ruins will pique anyone’s sense of adventure. The best way to see everything, though, is via a hot air balloon ride at sunset. The whole fantastical landscape glows in the setting sun and, quite frankly, words can’t do it justice.

June is an excellent time to head south to explore the best of Brazil. This is the driest part of the year, so it’s perfect for rainforest expeditions. The rainfall from the rainy season transforms Lençóis Maranhenses National Park into a tapestry of lakes and dunes like nowhere else on Earth.

Brazil’s cities also have unique spectacles. The yearly Festa Junina festivals celebrate the beginning of harvest season. Bonfires flare up, festive foods are cooked, and singing and dancing go on late into the night. It will be crowded, but it’s well worth it to take part in these colorful, unforgettable spectacles.

Iceland

Midnight sun means more time for exploring the hinterlands and hot springs of Iceland.

🛎️ Search for hotels in Iceland

Volcanic landscapes, massive waterfalls, hidden hot springs, and Viking heritage make Iceland a land like no other. June is one of the best times to visit because you can take advantage of long daylight hours to see and do more.

Consider a tour of the haunting interior of the island—it feels more like the moon than Earth in places. Conversely, you could enjoy creature comforts in Reykjavik or other cozy towns scattered across the countryside. If you’re short on time, you can still catch all the highlights like Betty did on her one day exploring the Golden Circle.

Icelandair offers a stopover program where you can take up to a week to explore the island between flights at no extra expense. Bookmark our Iceland packing list to get planning right away!

Ireland

Idyllic countryside, lively pub culture, and friendly locals are just a few of the Emerald Isle’s many treasures.

🛎️ Search for hotels in Ireland

Ireland is another stellar June destination. Prepare to see and do the best things by staying in Dublin or Galway, two of the country’s liveliest cities.

Rugged remoteness gives way to the rustic charm of the rolling green hills and snug farmsteads of the Irish countryside. But Ireland also has its epic side. This is best seen at places like the Cliffs of Moher, or some of the country’s more challenging hikes.

Ireland is also famous for its libations, the most famous of which is “the black stuff”: Guinness. There’s no better place to partake of a pint than in the many cozy Dublin pubs and others that line the streets of villages. Stop for a spell, chat with the locals, and maybe catch some traditional tunes if the pub features “sessions.”

Rwanda

June is the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla treks, urban adventures, and world-class coffee.

🛎️ Search for hotels in Rwanda

June is an excellent time to visit Rwanda because the weather is dry and warm (hovering around 80°F). Gorilla treks are one of the most popular tourist activities here, allowing guests to see silverbacks in their natural habitat. You might also spot chimpanzees swinging from branch to branch in the forests.

There’s much more to see here than wildlife, though. The capital city, Kigali, has museums, art galleries, and all the modern amenities you could ask for. Rwanda is world-famous for its coffee and there’s no better place than the source to enjoy a cuppa.

Provence, France

Indulge in the scents, sights, and savors of Southern France.

🛎️ Where to Stay

Provence, France makes for a perfect getaway from the summer crowds in Paris. The idyllic countryside teems with beauty, most notably within its vivid lavender fields.

Further south, along the coast, Marseilles is another often-overlooked gem. The French are divided as to whether or not it’s truly a “French” city (too industrial for some tastes). Either way, it has tons of character. What could be more romantic than renting a sailboat on the Mediterranean?

Cozy cafes abound across the city, as do elegant eateries. Further from town, the craggy coastline at the Calanques is perfect for hikes, sunbathing, and swimming.

Ecuador

Enchanting mountains, fascinating islands, and charming cities await visitors to this equatorial nation.

🛎️ Search for hotels in Ecuador

Ecuador has a little bit of everything. The Andes Mountains offer stunning vistas and epic hikes. The Galapagos Islands shelter unique endemic wildlife. The city of Quito combines Spanish colonial architecture, timeless Inca heritage, and modern advancement.

Guayaquil, the main jumping-off point for the Galapagos, is worth spending a few days in. The brightly-colored Las Peñas neighborhood and the boardwalk amusement park Malecon 2000 are two of the top attractions.

You’ll never be wanting a quick caffeine break in Ecuador. The country is famous for its coffee, as well as yerba mate.

Kyrgyzstan

Wander the highlands of this Central Asian republic in search of timeless nomadic traditions.

🛎️ Search for hotels in Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan tends to be overlooked by many people. They are missing out! Lofty, jagged mountains make up most of the country, with some valleys hiding pristine alpine lakes. This is the place for epic hikes off the beaten path!

Stay the night in a yurt, or go on a horseback expedition for a glimpse into the timeless traditions of the Kyrgyz people. Hunting with eagles is one of the most authentic, yet endangered aspects of traditional nomadic life. Most people have abandoned the practice, but you can still see shows in certain places, such as the town of Bokonbayevo.

Kyrgyzstan is also rich with Silk Road history. Ruins of ancient trading posts and caravanserais (historic inns) lie scattered across the country, preserving the memory of this famous epoch.

Malaysia

Go on an island-hopping adventure to discover pristine beaches, lush jungles, and much more!

🛎️ Search for hotels in Malaysia

June is the perfect time to explore the islands of Malaysia, especially the islands of Perhentian and Tioman. Crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, and lush green jungles offer the perfect island escapes.

Snorkeling and scuba diving tours give you an up-close look at marine wildlife. The interiors of the islands hide waterfalls and short, but rewarding hiking trails. Keep an eye out for tropical birds singing in the trees and monitor lizards scuttling about the beaches.

For some cultural and city exploration, set your sights on Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Accommodations here range from snug bungalows to luxurious resorts. Whatever your taste and budget, you’re sure to find it. Need a bit of inspiration? Take a look at Laura’s 2-week Malaysia itinerary!
