13 Best Tours to Explore Caves in Puerto Rico

Updated June 1, 2026

Did you know Puerto Rico has hundreds of caves? It’s true! If you’re not a speleologist (aka an expert cave explorer), the best way to experience them is on a guided cave tour.

Caves make some of the most unique sites in Puerto Rico, ranging from coastal formations to underwater marine-filled chambers, and even the world’s third-largest underground cavern system.

As a local, I can’t recommend checking out the local caves enough, and to make it easy for you, I’ve gathered the best cave tours in Puerto Rico so you can see for yourself.

Taino Indian Cave, Arecibo Hike and Beach Tour from San Juan

Descend into a coastal cave with Taíno petroglyphs.

  • 🌟 Guest Reviews: 5/5 Stars
  • 🗺️ Highlights: Cueva del Indio, Poza del Obispo
  • ✅ Includes: Transportation from the meeting point, bottled water, snacks

Cueva del Indio is by far one of the best caves in Puerto Rico, but it’s also one of the best free sites to visit in the archipelago. But, if you’re anything like me, chances are you can make it to the top of the cave, but have a hard time going down into it (what can I say, there are some very steep parts!)

This tour guides you and is the best way to see the cave safely and with ease. Plus, you’ll learn about the origin and meaning behind the petroglyphs on the cave’s walls, one of the best indigenous sites.

Then you’ll end your day at Poza del Obispo, a popular cove in Puerto Rico’s north coast.

Full-Day Tour: Arenales Caves and River Adventure in Puerto Rico

Swim to a cave in Vega Baja that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi movie.

  • 🗺️ Highlights: Arenales Cave, Manantial de Guayaney, swimming, hiking
  • ✅ Includes: Life vests, transportation, drinks, parking fees

The Arenales Cave is a local favorite. Located in the town of Vega Baja, a short ride from San Juan, this cave is part of a canyon carved by the Morovis River. To get there, you’ll hike through lush trails and swim in the river itself.

If it’s your first time, you might get lost or feel a bit uneasy navigating on your own, which is why I recommend joining the Puerto Rico as a Local tour to visit the Arenales Cave.

Inside, you’ll find smooth, rounded rock formations that look straight out of a sci-fi movie set. And the best part? Floating beneath these otherworldly shapes in the brilliant blue waters of Charco Azul.

After lunch, you’ll also visit a water spring located in the nearby town of Manatí.

Full-Day Cave, Indian Cave, and Waterfall Adventure

Spend a full day in the outdoors, exploring caves, rivers, and waterfalls.

After hiking through Cueva Clara and Cueva Ventana’s dark entrance, you’ll emerge at an impressive, window-like opening overlooking the valley below.

After the caves, refresh yourself at the Tanamá River and trek to La Planta waterfall, one of the most popular waterfalls in Puerto Rico

Finally, you’ll finish your day at the popular Cueva del Indio cave, where you get cliff views from the coast and see a collection of Taíno petroglyphs.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about driving in Puerto Rico, as your transportation is included.

Cave and Waterfall Exploration: Charco Azul Canyon, Puerto Rico

Those who dare to trek to Puerto Rico’s rivers find unique rock formations and caves along the way.

This Puerto Rico Cave and Waterfalls tour takes you through the Charco Azul Canyon, where you’ll find both caves, waterfalls, and swimming holes.

With your complimentary life vest, you can explore with peace of mind, floating calmly as you admire the formations inside Arenales Cave, one of the canyon’s main attractions.

But one of the best parts of this tour is visiting lesser-known caves such as Cueva Malanga and Cueva Larga, both of which require swimming and a headlamp to explore.

And if you’re a thrill-seeker, you can follow your guide for a heart-pumping cliff dive into Charco Azul.

On the site, you’ll learn about the local heritage, folklore, and geography. You’ll finish your day having experienced the best of Puerto Rico’s food, culture, and outdoors.

But, this Explora tour guides you through the Tanamá Canyon to find even those nameless caves that outdoor lovers will rave about.

Your adventure with Explora includes thrilling experiences like body rafting, caving, river trekking, and hiking.

Explora keeps its groups small, so the experience is more enjoyable.

👉 Local Tip: This tour does not offer transportation. You’ll have to rent a car to get to Plaza Las Américas, and from there, the tour guides will escort you to the final destination.

Puerto Rico has caves both along the coast and in the mountains, and you don’t have to choose just one type to visit.

On this Local Tourist Puerto Rico tour, you’ll explore two very different examples: Cueva Arenales and Cueva del Indio.

Cueva Arenales is tucked away in the mountainous region of Vega Baja. To reach it, you’ll hike through the river leading into the famous Charco Azul Canyon.

Along the way, pause to admire the lush vegetation, local wildlife, and waterfalls. Within the same cave system formed by the Morovis River, you’ll also visit Cueva Larga.

After lunch, your caving adventure wraps up at Cueva del Indio, where cliffs frame photo-perfect ocean views. Inside, you’ll see ancient Taíno petroglyphs carved into the stone.

Lares Cavern System Tour by Puerto Rico Interior Tours

Walk through pitch-dark cave passages and discover underground waterfalls with this tour.

This company will take you to an underground cavern system in Lares. You’ll visit multiple caves including El Calabozo, rappel, and see petroglyphs. You’ll trek through the underground river, cross pitch-black caves, and swim in underground waterfalls.

Though challenging, you don’t need any experience for this tour!

    1. Hi Melissa! Great to hear you’re visiting Cabo Rojo. I don’t know of any operating cave tours within or near Cabo Rojo. However, you can contact local tour guides and customize a tour. You can message:

If you’re willing to drive a bit farther, then you can check out:
