Planning a trip to Scotland and have no idea what to pack? I’ve got you covered. I’m a Scot, so I know the best products to bring and the most practical clothes to wear. I’ve put together this checklist of all the essentials you will need.

Choosing what to take on holiday can be a daunting task, but this list covers anything you could possibly need, from clothing and baggage to practical gear and more. 

Use this checklist whether you’re exploring the Highlands, cities, or any of the other fantastic places to visit in Scotland. Let’s dive in!

Travel Umbrella

It almost goes without saying that a travel umbrella is crucial for any visit to Scotland. There’s rain year-round, so it’s key to be prepared for wet weather.

Clothing, Shoes, & Accessories to Pack for Scotland

I recommend bringing layers to wear in Scotland – short-sleeved t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets in summer, and long-sleeved tops, jumpers, and warm coats in winter. That way, you can adapt to the unpredictable weather all year round. Bring enough clothes for a week, and you can wash them if you stay for longer. 

Scottish people don’t tend to care about what people wear, so wear what you like. You won’t see many people wearing kilts, however – these are mostly reserved for formal events like weddings or cultural occasions like pipe band performances. 

I’ve compiled the basics below for you to check off.

Rain Jacket

A waterproof jacket is essential in Scotland to keep you and your outfit dry. A lightweight jacket is easier to pack, and you can keep warm by wearing layers underneath.

Scotland Packing Tips

Bring Midge Repellent for Camping Trips

If you’re visiting Scotland in the summer, particularly if you go camping in the Highlands, you’re likely to encounter midges. These tiny flying insects aren’t dangerous, but they do have a painful bite. You’ll want to bring some insect repellent.

Pack for Changeable Weather

You can prepare as much as you like, check the weather forecast religiously, and still be caught out by unexpected weather in Scotland. We’re known to have four seasons in one day. Pack layers that you can take on and off to be prepared for any eventuality. And bring something with a hood, year-round. 

Keep Extremities Warm

The quickest way to lose heat in cold weather is through your head, hands, and feet. When it’s cold, wear a wool hat, thick socks in boots, and waterproof gloves. 

Think Twice About High Heels

Scotland is hilly, even in the cities. Practical shoes will be more comfortable as you sightsee, especially if you have to walk on cobblestones. If you like to dress up for dinners or nights out, feel free to wear heels, but it’s also very common for locals to wear flat shoes to bars and clubs.

Consider Your Luggage Style

If you’re torn between bringing a travel backpack or a suitcase, consider where you’ll be taking your luggage. There are several cobblestone streets in Edinburgh that don’t work well with wheeled suitcases, and you may have to carry luggage up endless flights of stairs. If you think that might be an issue, consider bringing a travel backpack instead. 

Bring a Washcloth

One last Scotland travel tip before you go – hotels in Scotland typically don’t provide washcloths – or face cloths as they’re known here – to guests. They’re considered more personal items, so if this is something you use and want to have in Scotland, consider either bringing your own or buying one in a shop.
