St. George’s population is around 100,000, making it the biggest city in southern Utah. Still, its layout doesn’t feel overwhelming. St. George is a relatively compact city and most of the neighborhoods are close to each other. Deciding where to stay comes down to your travel style.

To help you decide, below are the top St. George neighborhoods you should consider. I’ve also included a couple of communities outside of the city which may be better suited to your needs.

St. George City Center

The city center also boasts plenty of indoor attractions that couldn’t be more alluring during the heat of the summer. The air-conditioned St. George Museum of Art and the Daughters of Utah Pioneers museum are great options.

Inn On The Cliff is located in the heart of St. George and offers stunning red rock views from its restaurant and rooftop pool. Meanwhile, The Chalet is one of the most affordable hotels in town, perfect for visitors on a budget.

In this area, you’ll find older, more rustic homes surrounding the Bloomington golf course. This is the ideal place to stay for St. George visitors who like to par-tee — get it? However, Bloomington is a little out of the way of most hiking and outdoor activities, so it may not be the best place to stay for those who visit St. George for this purpose.

The Villas at Southgate is one of the best places to stay in Bloomington for golfers, as well as other visitors who like to stay in modern and spacious accommodations.

Middleton

Besides hiking trails, one of the biggest attractions in Middleton is the newly renovated Middleton Park. This 1-acre park includes a covered pavilion with picnic tables and a large barbeque area, a full basketball court, a grassy field for soccer or frisbee, and a jungle gym.

Middleton is one of the best places to stay in St. George for families with children because it’s farther from the busy chaos of downtown. It’s also close to fun recreation spaces like Forest Park and Red Cliffs National Conservation Area.

Staying in Washington gets you a bit closer to the Utah national parks. Washington is also much quieter than other St. George neighborhoods, thanks to its position away from the major shopping centers and other big city attractions.

Springdale is located roughly an hour east of St. George and is the gateway town to Zion National Park. It’s outside of the city, to be sure — but I’m including Springdale for those who prioritize proximity to Zion. 

This small desert town caters to tourists and has hotels within walking distance of the national park entrance. There are also plenty of bike rentals, gear shops, restaurants, and souvenirs galore. Famous Zion red rock monoliths can be seen from just about everywhere in Springdale, making this one of the most photogenic desert towns in the greater St. George area. 

I usually camp on free BLM land right outside of Springdale, but there are tons of charming places to stay for non-campers as well. Red Cliffs Lodge Zion features newly renovated rooms, a gorgeous outdoor pool, an on-site restaurant, and an unbeatable location. The best of Springdale is all within walking distance. 

Zion Park Motel is another top choice in town. The motel is just as scenic but is easier on the pocketbook, making it the top choice for Zion visitors on a budget.

Tips for Staying in St. George

Book Accommodation in Advance

Accommodation in St. George often fills to capacity during the peak season months. Book well in advance to secure your accommodation, especially if staying in a smaller neighboring community like Washington or Hurricane.

Know When to Go

Utah is very much a desert state. Take advantage of St. George attractions in the fall to avoid scorching desert temperatures that often soar higher than 100 degrees.

Bryce Canyon National Park is 2 hours from St. George. It’s one of the top national parks in Utah and well worth the drive. Kanab is another top Utah destination that’s only 1 ½ hours from St. George. There are so many fun things to do in Kanab like slot canyons, sand dunes, and lakeside activities.
