I’m originally from San Jose and spent years exploring California’s third-largest city. In this article, I’ll tell you exactly where to stay in San Jose based on your travel style.

First-time visitors and business travelers should stay in Downtown San Jose to be close to all the action. The best hotel downtown is the Signia by Hilton San Jose — it’s well-known for its luxury and even has a rooftop pool.

Of course, there are many more great places to stay in San Jose and even in nearby San Francisco. This guide breaks down where to stay in San Jose by neighborhood and gives pros and cons. I’ve even listed out restaurants and attractions in each.

But first, here’s a list of the best hotels in San Jose:

East and South San Jose have sprawling county parks with hiking trails. West San Jose is near affluent Los Gatos and is a slightly shorter drive to beaches on the other side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Meanwhile, North San Jose will position you closer to the airport and the southern tip of the San Francisco Bay.

Downtown San Jose is the heart of the city. It’s just four miles from the airport, and staying here will put you close to the convention center as well as bars and restaurants.

For sightseeing, make time for my favorite museum here – The Tech Interactive. You can tinker, design, and channel the exploratory spirit that created Silicon Valley!

Signia by Hilton San Jose is the former Fairmont Hotel, well known as one of the nicest hotels downtown. The outdoor pool has loungers and is shaded by palm trees, and the lobby bar and steakhouse offer an elegant place to unwind.

Pros of Staying in Downtown San Jose:

  • Close to the airport and convention center
  • Lots of restaurants and bars
  • Very walkable

Cons of Staying in Downtown San Jose:

  • Hotels can be pricey

West San Jose

West San Jose includes an upscale outdoor shopping experience and is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in San Jose. It’s a safe area and many hotels offer suites – making this a good base for families staying in San Jose.

The Winchester Mystery House and the Pruneyard Shopping Center are both in the area.

Nearby Los Gatos has a small-town feel with shady streets and Spanish-style architecture (plus my favorite bakery – Icing on the Cake!). For a hotel, the Courtyard by Marriott San Jose Campbell has an outdoor pool, a bistro, and an in-room refrigerator. These features make it a great home base for families in particular.

Pros of Staying in West San Jose Neighborhood:

  • Very safe neighborhoods
  • Family-friendly
  • Upscale shopping

Cons of Staying in West San Jose Neighborhood:

  • Farther from the airport
  • Farther from downtown museums and attractions

I grew up in East San Jose, and I’ll always have a soft spot for it. There are areas of East San Jose and the Alum Rock neighborhood with higher crime rates than most of the city. However, there are also incredibly scenic areas of East San Jose with miles of hiking trails and even a few wineries.

The Best Western Lanai Garden Inn & Suites has an outdoor pool, which is great for cooling off during the summer months. It also features a daily breakfast so you can fuel up before a hike!

Pros of Staying in East San Jose Neighborhood:

  • Lots of hiking trails and parks
  • Views across the Silicon Valley

Did you know San Jose has the largest population of Vietnamese people outside of Vietnam? Experience vibrant Vietnamese culture and food at the many shops and restaurants in Little Saigon near East San Jose.

I also recommend a visit to the Viet Museum in Kelley Park. You’ll learn the perspectives and stories of the Vietnamese people who immigrated to San Jose.

Tips for Staying in San Jose

You’ll Need a Car

There is a light rail and bus system in the city, but the sprawling suburbs are more easily navigated with your own set of wheels. I used the search engine Discover Cars the last time we traveled and got a great price and smooth rental experience.

If you’re staying downtown, you can get a rideshare to and from the airport. You may be able to function without a car here by walking. Still, if you want to sightsee, go for a hike, or do pretty much anything else, you’ll need a car.

Explore Nearby

San Francisco makes a great day trip!

I love San Jose. Though, most locals will admit that San Jose is a great place to live, but not a very exciting place to visit. What it does have going for it, however, is that it’s close to some exciting places.

San Jose is an hour from San Francisco attractions and 45 minutes from Santa Cruz when traffic is good. You’re also ninety minutes from Pinnacles National Park — a day trip I’ve taken many times.

Try the Different Foods

One of my favorite features of San Jose is its incredible diversity (San Jose residents speak more than 56 languages)! [source

And one of my favorite ways to experience this diversity is by trying foods from many different cultures. If you can think of a region in the world with its own unique food, chances are you’ll find it here.

It Gets Hot

San Jose has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and rainy but mild winters. You’ll want sunscreen regardless of when you visit, but especially in summertime. You’ll also want a water bottle, sun hat, and most other items on this California packing list.

When looking for hotels in late spring, summer, or early fall, look for one with a pool — especially if you have kids. They’ll appreciate the chance to cool off.

Explore the Outdoors

Once you get out of downtown San Jose, there are lots of large parks with hiking and biking trails. There are several golf courses. Lake Cunningham Park has the largest skatepark in California and is also home to Raging Waters water park.
