As a native San Antonian deeply connected to the city’s hospitality scene, I love helping people who want to visit have the best experience. And that starts with the right place to stay. I’m also a big believer in staycations, so I’ve got firsthand experience with many of the hotels on this list!

If it’s your first time visiting the Alamo City, I recommend staying Downtown on the River Walk. Most of the things you’ll want to experience are in that area, and it’s easy to navigate, with lots of restaurants, bars, shopping, and other cultural attractions.

The Hotel Valencia River Walk is my overall top pick. There are a lot of things that make this property a winner: the design details in the second-floor lobby, the welcome margarita, the luxurious but unfussy rooms, and direct River Walk access.

As a city that attracts many tourists, San Antonio offers lots of lodging options, though. So let’s dive in.

Ok, let’s do a deep dive into the best areas and neighborhoods in San Antonio:

5 Best Neighborhoods & Areas to Stay in San Antonio

Best for Resorts & Theme Parks

The downtown area is divided into several distinct sub-areas, though most of the highest-rated hotels are in the Downtown/River Walk area. There are also a few areas outside of downtown you may want to check out.

San Antonio is a large city but it’s very spread out, and most of the neighborhoods surrounding downtown have a suburban feel. While the outlying areas can be interesting and diverse, the city’s heartbeat is downtown. And that’s where visitors — especially first-timers — will have the best experience.

Downtown/River Walk

A stay along the River Walk puts you right in the middle of the action

👉 Best Area For First Timers and Nightlife | ✨ Best Downtown/River Walk Hotels: Hotel Valencia River WalkSan Antonio Marriott River CenterThompson San Antonio River Walk

No one comes to San Antonio and says, “I don’t want to see the River Walk.” So, staying in this area, especially for a first-timer, is what often makes the most sense.

There’s a robust selection of highly-rated hotels within easy walking distance to everything you want to see and do. Getting around is simple and there’s no need to conquer public transportation since everything is very walkable.

The first thing I recommend any visitor to do is to hop on a GO RIO boat tour. Yes, it’s touristy but the 35-minute boat ride along the San Antonio River will teach you a lot about the city’s history and you’ll see where all the good restaurants are.

The Hotel Valencia River Walk is my favorite place to stay and #1 recommendation overall. San Antonio has a lot of great hotels but I’d choose this one every time. I love the Spanish mission-style decor which is both minimal and chic.

The San Antonio Marriott River Center is also great for first-time visitors because of its location. Hop out the back door and go down a few steps and you are on the River Walk. Plus, it’s loaded with amenities, including a rooftop pool and a lobby bar that has a big selection of Agave spirits.

If you want nightlife, this is the place to be,  whether that means a quiet pub or a livelier atmosphere. One of my favorite spots to grab drinks is the Moon’s Daughters, a rooftop bar with the dreamiest views at the Thompson San Antonio River Walk

Pros of Staying Downtown along the River Walk:

  • Top attractions are at your doorstep
  • Endless restaurant choices
  • You’re instantly immersed in San Antonio’s culture and feel part of the action

Cons of Staying Downtown along the River Walk:

  • Loud, touristy, and often crowded with convention-goers
  • Everything is more expensive here, from restaurants to drugstore sundries
  • Heavy on Tex-Mex compared to other cuisines, may be limiting for visitors who want variety

Hemisfair

The Bombay Bicycle Club is a fun place to eat and drink in Hemisfair

👉 Best Area For Families and Couples | ✨ Best Hemisfair Hotels: Monarch San AntonioGrand Hyatt San Antonio River WalkHilton Palacio del Rio

The Hemisfair neighborhood was originally built as the site of the 1968 World’s Fair, which had a major impact on San Antonio’s tourism. Although it’s just a short walk from the River Walk, Hemisfair has a greener, more neighborhood feel. It’s relaxed without being slow.

Hemisfair was my childhood playground, and although it looks much different today than when I was a kid (the play equipment is way cooler), I can catch little glimpses of the landscape in my memories. And I love to see visitors to San Antonio enjoying it, too.

The newly-opened Monarch San Antonio is a design-forward high-rise with a rooftop bar and unique local art. Its presence will take Hemisfair to the next level as a hotspot. However, it might not be a great option for a budget-minded young family.

Meanwhile, the Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk offers comfortable rooms, impeccable service, and fun amenities. You’ll find a pool deck with games, a game room, and several on-site spots to grab food and drinks, including Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

The Bombay Bicycle Club is a great, casual spot to grab food and drinks. There’s another location near the San Antonio Zoo, so make sure you’re setting your navigation to the Hemisfair location. The indoor seating is fun and funky, with lots of stained glass and velvet upholstery, and the patio leads out to Yanaguana Garden, a park featuring public art, a playground, and a splash pad.

The two gondolas at the park entrance are art installations and photo spots today, but they’re remnants of the Sky Ride that connected the zoo with the Japanese Tea Garden until 1999.

Pros of Staying in Hemisfair:

  • Quieter and often less crowded than the River Walk
  • Easy, quick walk to the River Walk and downtown, so there’s no feeling of being cut off.
  • Family-friendly with a public playground that makes you wish you were a kid again.

Cons of Staying in Hemisfair:

  • Limited late-night/nightlife options
  • Big convention groups can shift the vibe to overwhelming.

The Pearl District

The Pearl District is home to Lag Gloria Pearl, the best authentic Mexican patio dining in the area

👉 Best Area For Foodies and Luxury Travelers | ✨ Best Pearl District Hotel: Hotel Emma

San Antonio’s Historic Pearl District is a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex built on the site of the former Pearl Brewery. Anchored by the ultra-luxe Hotel Emma, this area has retained the brewery’s industrial design bones while adding modern touches. This is a place where it’s easy to glimpse the past while being firmly in the present (and try the creations of some of San Antonio’s finest chefs).

The Hotel Emma, named for Emma Koehler, the wife of Pearl Brewery owner Otto Koehler, blends industrial history with modern luxury. Rooms feature one of the best stocked minibars in Texas, called the “icebox.” Guests also have access to a private library where they can relax with a margarita or coffee.

If the steep prices at Hotel Emma are a dealbreaker, I recommend a visit to the lobby or having a coffee at Larder or a drink at Sternewirth to soak in the vibes.

Pros of Staying in the Pearl District:

  • One of the city’s best dining scenes.
  • Walkable shops, markets, and cafés
  • Quieter stretch of the River Walk

Cons of Staying in the Pearl District:

  • Only one major hotel option – the area needs a mid-priced boutique hotel badly.
  • Hotel Emma is pricey
  • Weekend crowds and busy restaurants

San Antonio Airport Area

I love this lobby bar area in the San Antonio Airport Marriott – the free shuttle over to the terminal was seamless

👉 Best Area For Business & Budget Travelers and Road Trippers | ✨ Best San Antonio Airport Area Hotels: San Antonio Airport MarriottAloft San Antonio AirportEmbassy Suites by Hilton San Antonio Airport

Although San Antonio International Airport doesn’t have any in-terminal hotels, there are options within a short drive of the airport. Although the city’s airport hotels are located along the highway and not in a walkable, explore-worthy neighborhood, these can be convenient for travelers who want to be near the airport. Especially for an early morning flight or road trippers who want to take advantage of the complimentary parking many airport hotels offer.

The airport is about eight miles from downtown, usually a 10-20 minute drive depending on traffic. This means you’re not in the middle of the action, but you’re not far from it, either. If you’re a chain hotel brand loyalist who wants to make good use of those Bonvoy points or get perks associated with your Hilton Honors status, an airport hotel stay in a familiar franchise might be a good option.

I like the San Antonio Airport Marriott when I have an early morning flight. Their hotel restaurant/lounge, Agave 210, has good food and the vibe of an after-work watering hole that locals frequent. Nearby North Star Mall has plenty of shopping and dining options, plus a chance to peep at the largest pair of cowboy boots in the world. Although typically considered an Alamo Heights neighborhood attraction, the McNay Art Museum is a manageable drive from the airport.

Families looking for a good deal may opt for the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Antonio Airport. Its amenities include a free hot breakfast and a guest happy hour with drinks and bites, plus a room design that allows some separation between parents and kids.

Pros of Staying Near the San Antonio Airport:

  • Cheaper hotel prices
  • Hotel amenities like shuttle transportation to the terminals
  • Free parking is ideal for anyone bringing their own car (check your hotel’s specifics.
  • Only 15-20 minutes from downtown

Cons of Staying Near the San Antonio Airport:

  • Driving your own car into downtown means paying parking fees
  • Non-hotel restaurants involve a drive or Uber ride – nothing is walkable
  • Removed from the city’s main attractions

North San Antonio

👉 Best Area For Resorts & Theme Parks | ✨ Best North San Antonio Hotels: JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa • Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Villas • La Cantera Resort & Spa

If you’re looking for more of an “I don’t want to have to leave the hotel” kind of stay, where all of your dining and activities are on-site. Or, if you’re traveling as a family and might not be up for loading the kids in the car or wrangling them during an off-property walk to an attraction, you might feel at home in one of North San Antonio’s resort-style hotels.

Downtown San Antonio hotels often have a robust list of amenities. However, a full resort-style hotel hits a certain sweet spot with family travelers and anyone who loves a good luxury experience with all the amenities at your fingertips. Downtown and the other cultural attractions are still there. Further away, but not inaccessible. And you can see them on your terms.

The JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa in northeast San Antonio is a universal crowd pleaser for school-aged kids and teens. Highlights include a lazy river, multiple pools, VR golf, a kids’ club, and multiple screens at the on-site sports bar, High Velocity. If you aren’t tied to being Downtown on the River Walk, this is always one of my top recommendations. And it’s 18 Oaks Restaurant, overlooking the golf course, has the city’s best brunch in my opinion.

On the other hand, the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Villas is an easy drive from SeaWorld and offers seasonal shuttle service and ticket assistance. The resort’s new 2.2‑acre Big Spring Lagoon is complete with white‑sand beaches, cabanas, kayaking, and paddle‑boarding opportunities. It brings a little slice of the beach after a long day in the SeaWorld parks, or is ideal for a dedicated hotel pool day.

Unlike other sections of this guide, the resort hotel options listed are spread out over various neighborhoods north of Downtown San Antonio. But the amenities and stellar service make these spots too good not to mention.

Pros of Staying in North San Antonio:

  • Sweet resort pool amenities
  • Easy access to Texas Hill Country
  • Adult amenities like golf courses and spas

Cons of Staying in North San Antonio:

  • A car is a must
  • Rooms are expensive
  • Not in the middle of the city’s action

Tips for Staying in San Antonio

Parking in Downtown San Antonio is Expensive

There’s no free parking in Downtown San Antonio. All of the lots, parking garages, and street parking are attached to some sort of payment system. Most downtown hotels don’t offer free parking, either. Although you might get lucky and find a bundled offer with your room rate. Self-parking usually starts around $30 per day, and valet parking is usually upwards of $75.

Summer is Hot – Really, Really Hot

Closeup look of a hand holding a summer drink
Plan for some indoor fun during summer visits to San Antonio

San Antonio’s summertime highs often spike into the triple digits and the high humidity makes it feel even hotter.

That doesn’t mean a summer stay is off the table, but make sure your wish list has some indoor activities. For example, head to Hopscotch on Navarro Street — an immersive art museum with hands-on exhibits and fun cocktails and mocktails. Schedule hikes or bike treks earlier in the day to try and beat the heat.

Cheaper Hotels Are Outside Downtown – But Here’s Why That Might Not Be the Best Plan

When you search for San Antonio hotels, you’re probably going to notice how expensive the downtown area hotels are. Those cheaper rooms 10-15 miles from downtown are going to seem like a great idea.

Consider where you’ll be spending your time and how you’ll get back and forth. Although many hotels outside downtown have complimentary parking, you’re going to have to pay to park downtown. Ride-shares often have unexpected surge pricing, making them an expensive option for getting from point A to point B.

Expect Hotel Pricing to Surge During Major Events

Hotel prices will surge during events and festivals

Spring break, the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo (February), Fiesta San Antonio (April), and the winter holidays can bring price surges. Major sporting events and conventions can also drive up hotel rates.

Although hotels are more expensive downtown during events like these, you don’t want to stay outside of town during certain events. Otherwise, it may be hard to get back and forth between downtown and the rest of the city.

For the Best River Walk Pictures, Visit Early in the Morning

A woman strolling along the river walk
Stroll the River Walk in the mornings before the restaurants open for lunch to find fewer crowds

The River Walk is beautiful and one of the top things to do in San Antonio. But it’s crowded and busy most of the time. If you want those epic vacation photos, consider setting your alarm early and exploring before the crowds hit.

There is very little open on the River Walk before lunch, but it’s a good opportunity to really look at the architecture and get those bridge pictures without dozens of people you don’t know in the background.

FAQs about San Antonio

How many days is enough for San Antonio?

For a first-time visitor, I think the sweet spot is three to four days. Allow two full days to explore the River Walk, Downtown, the Alamo, and Hemisfair Park. Add at least another half-day for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. If you plan to visit SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or the nearby Texas Hill Country, add in a full day to do each of those things.

What areas of San Antonio should I avoid staying in?

I recommend avoiding staying in suburban San Antonio unless your plans have you spending time in those areas. Or, if you’re staying at one of the full resort hotels and want those amenities.

You’ll find budget hotels and a variety of restaurants outside of central San Antonio. However, you’ll probably spend your time going back and forth to Downtown. I think it’s important for a first-time visitor to be immersed in the city’s culture and personality, and it is harder to find that outside of Downtown.

What are the best parts of San Antonio to stay with kids?

I’m a parent and I think every neighborhood I’ve mentioned in this guide is suitable for kids. Hemisfair is a great overall neighborhood to explore with kids but you’ll find most San Antonio hotels welcome children. But of course, there are some hotels I recommend for adults because of elevated dining and luxe amenities.

Additionally, the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa is awesome for families but it’s 20+ miles from downtown. The same goes for the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Villas

What is the best time of year to visit San Antonio?

Spring and fall are going to bring the best, most predictable weather. Although San Antonio is enjoyable year-round, the summer heat is intense and it’s uncomfortable to be outside in the middle of the day. If you’re going to visit in summer, pick a hotel with a good pool and plan your outdoor activities for the early morning.

January and February can be amazing but the weather is unpredictable. Winters are generally mild but if the ice is going to show up, it’s going to be early in the year.

Do I need a car in San Antonio?

It depends on what you’re going to do. If you plan to spend all your time exploring downtown, then no. Use a ride-share to get from the airport to your hotel and walk or grab an e-bike from a kiosk and use Uber or Lyft for when you’re venturing further from your hotel.

There’s no such thing as free parking in downtown San Antonio, and most hotels charge at least $30 per day for self-parking. If you’re going to SeaWorld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or Natural Bridge Caverns, then a car might be a good decision.

Thanks for reading! There are a lot of amazing hotels and resorts in San Antonio but my best advice is make sure you’re staying near your chosen activities so you don’t spend extra time in transit. If you have a question, feel free to ask in the comments section below. Enjoy San Antonio!
