I’ve been living in Destin, Florida, for the last five years with my husband, and we love calling the Emerald Coast home. Despite its popularity, Destin still feels more like a small town than a tourist hotspot. As a local, I’m happy to provide insight about where to stay when visiting the Florida Panhandle.
First time visiting Destin? Stay in Crystal Beach or Miramar Beach – both are located right in the heart of the city with beach access, fantastic restaurants, plenty of shops, and family-friendly activities.
The Henderson Beach Resort is my #1 hotel recommendation overall. It’s located in Crystal Beach and offers resort-style amenities with a private beach. There’s also Hotel Effie, Autograph Collection in Miramar Beach, which is luxurious and even has a rooftop pool. These two hotels are my top recommendations for Destin.

Now, let’s deep dive into some of the pros and cons of staying in each area of Destin.
7 Best Neighborhoods & Areas to Stay in Destin

Destin spans linearly across the Emerald Coast and stretches along Highway 98, which serves as the city’s main roadway. The city of Destin is situated on a narrow peninsula and surrounded by smaller cities that blend across the coast, such as Navarre, Santa Rosa Beach, and Miramar Beach.
Traffic can get busy during the summer and holidays, but most of Destin’s main attractions are still within a 30-minute drive. Below, I’ll tell you about each area in Destin, including a few great hotels to stay at and nearby recommendations for dining, shopping, and entertainment.
Crystal Beach

👉 Best Area For First-Timers & Beachgoers | ✨ Best Crystal Beach Hotels: Henderson Beach Resort • Holiday Inn Express Destin E-Commons Mall • Beachside Inn
Crystal Beach is my top recommendation for where to stay in Destin, as it’s surrounded by all the main highlights. It’s ideal for first-time visitors, including families and beachgoers looking for quick and easy access to both the beach and the city’s best attractions.
Stay at the Henderson Beach Resort for exclusive use of their pristine beach, resort-style amenities, on-site dining, and expansive family-friendly pool with a lazy river. This is one of the best hotels in Destin, although the price can be steep during peak season.
For a more budget-friendly option, stay at Holiday Inn Express Destin E-Commons Mall, which is just a few blocks from the beach.
Crystal Beach is across the street from the Destin Commons shopping center and not far from many of the city’s best restaurants and attractions. Although Destin isn’t the most walkable destination, Crystal Beach is easier to explore on foot.
One of the biggest advantages of staying in Crystal Beach is having easier access to the public beach, which can be difficult in Destin.
Pros of Staying in the Crystal Beach Neighborhood:
- Convenience to Destin’s best public beaches
- Easier to explore on foot
- Located near the city’s main attractions
Cons of Staying in the Crystal Beach Neighborhood:
- Heavy traffic from the nearby Mid-Bay Bridge
- Beach parking is expensive and limited
- It could be too busy for some

Miramar Beach

👉 Best Area For Couples | ✨ Best Miramar Beach Hotels: Hotel Effie, Autograph Collection • Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa • Residence Inn Sandestin at Grand Boulevard • Hyatt Place Sandestin at Grand Boulevard • Embassy Suites by Hilton Destin Miramar Beach
Located on the eastern side of Destin is Miramar Beach, home to the expansive Sandestin Resort and a variety of upscale accommodations. Miramar Beach has a prime location between 30A and Destin, making this area the perfect choice for couples or those wanting higher-end amenities.
Indulge in a posh stay at Hotel Effie, Autograph Collection in Miramar Beach – one of my top hotel recommendations in Destin. The rooftop pool is opulent and overlooks the bay for unforgettable sunsets.
Miramar Beach is also conveniently located near multiple shopping areas and restaurants, including the upscale Grand Boulevard. Stay at the Hyatt Place Sandestin at Grand Boulevard to be within walking distance of this popular lifestyle center.
For families, the nearby Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin is a popular choice for kid-friendly activities and entertainment. Also, many of Destin’s other attractions are within a short 20-minute drive of Miramar Beach.
Pros of Staying in Miramar Beach Neighborhood:
- Higher-end resorts and amenities

Downtown Destin

👉 Best Area For Nightlife & Crab Island | ✨ Best Downtown Destin Hotels: Emerald Grande • Habor Suites at Harborwalk Village
Downtown Destin is one of the liveliest areas in our city with a mix of waterfront entertainment, dining, shopping, and activities. While not necessarily large, Downtown Destin is where you can find the city’s nightlife scene, typically within the HarborWalk Village.
In the summer months, Downtown Destin is bustling with live music, evening firework shows, and beachfront activities. Hotel options are limited here, but if you’re looking to enjoy the waterfront bars or the iconic McGuire’s Irish Pub, consider staying at the Emerald Grande.
The other accommodation I recommend in Downtown Destin is Habor Suites at Harborwalk Village, which has its own private beach area.
Downtown Destin is located on the scenic Destin Harbor, so you can board dolphin-watching cruises and Crab Island water taxis from here! Party-goers and nightlife-lovers will especially appreciate the bar scene in Downtown Destin.
Pros of Staying in the Downtown Destin Neighborhood:
- Lively nightlife, entertainment, and beachfront bars
- Convenience to harbor cruises
- Close to Crab Island
Cons of Staying in the Downtown Destin Neighborhood:
- Limited hotel and resort options
- Parking can be expensive
- It could be too rowdy for some

Okaloosa Island

👉 Best Area For Families | ✨ Best Okaloosa Island Hotels: Holiday Inn Resort Fort Walton Beach by IHG • Beal House Fort Walton Beach, Tapestry Collection By Hilton • Wavecrest Lodge
Okaloosa Island is a short 10-minute drive west of Destin and is considered one of the city’s most family-friendly areas. Despite the name, Okaloosa Island isn’t an actual island – it’s connected to Destin and Fort Walton Beach by two different bridges.
This hidden gem is one of the best places to stay for families and budget-conscious visitors. Okaloosa Island has a quieter beach scene than other areas in Destin, but you’ll find the same sugar-white sands and emerald-blue waters.
Okaloosa Island is usually more affordable than other areas in Destin, and there are many different beachfront hotels to choose from. Check out the Holiday Inn Resort Fort Walton Beach by IHG or Beal House Fort Walton Beach, Tapestry Collection By Hilton.
Families with kids will also love the nearby attractions, such as the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, the Island Pier, Wild Willy’s Adventure Zone, and the Okaloosa Boardwalk.
Pros of Staying in the Okaloosa Island Neighborhood:
- More affordable accommodations
- Quieter beach scene
- Kid-friendly attractions nearby
Cons of Staying in the Okaloosa Island Neighborhood:
- Fewer dining options
- Not very walkable
- Bridges can get congested

Fort Walton Beach

👉 Best Area For Budget Travelers | ✨ Best Fort Walton Beach Hotels: Residence Inn by Marriott Fort Walton Beach • La Quinta by Wyndham Fort Walton Beach • Holiday Inn Express – Fort Walton Beach Central by IHG
Consider staying in Fort Walton Beach if you’re looking to visit Destin on a budget.
Fort Walton Beach offers a more laid-back atmosphere, with many locals and military families calling the area home. Because of this, you’ll find more locally-owned restaurants, including a variety of food trucks. However, the area is a bit older and doesn’t have as many upscale amenities.
You’ll experience a more authentic side of the Emerald Coast with less of an emphasis on tourist attractions. Plus, this area is closest to the Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport.
Although hotels are more affordable in Fort Walton Beach, you probably won’t have beachfront access unless you stay on Okaloosa Island (mentioned above).
My top hotel recommendation in Fort Walton Beach is the Residence Inn by Marriott FWB for its premium location and spacious rooms. You can drive just a few minutes to the beach or venture 15 minutes to Destin for the must-do attractions.
Pros of Staying in Fort Walton Beach Neighborhood:
- Budget-friendly accommodations
- A variety of local restaurants and food trucks
- Close to the airport
Cons of Staying in Fort Walton Beach Neighborhood:
- Limited beach access
- Fewer upscale shopping and dining options
- Driving is necessary to visit most attractions
- The area is older and a little more rundown

Navarre

👉 Best Area For Fewer Crowds | ✨ Best Navarre Hotels: SpringHill Suites by Marriott Navarre Beach • Hampton Inn & Suites Navarre • Best Western Navarre Waterfront
Much of Destin has been developed for tourists, but the city of Navarre remains largely untouched with its white-sand beaches and dunes.
Located just west of Destin, Navarre is often called the “most relaxing place in Florida” thanks to its uncrowded, unspoiled shoreline. In addition to the peaceful atmosphere, the ocean is some of the clearest and cleanest in the Gulf Coast.
Those wanting to avoid the tourist crowds for a quiet beach retreat should consider staying in Navarre. This area is perfect for visitors who enjoy beach activities like swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, or kayaking. Stay at the Best Western Navarre Waterfront for its excellent location and affordable pricing.
The trade-off of staying in Navarre is that you’ll be further from Destin’s main attractions. There are fewer options for dining and shopping as well. However, you can enjoy some of the unique attractions in Navarre, such as the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center.
Pros of Staying in the Navarre Neighborhood:
- Less crowded beaches
- Budget-friendly accommodations
- Perfect for relaxation
- Ideal for outdoor and beach activities
Cons of Staying in the Navarre Neighborhood:
- Fewer nearby attractions
- Further from Destin
- It could be too quiet for some

Santa Rosa Beach

👉 Best Area For Visiting 30A | ✨ Best Santa Rosa Beach Hotels: WaterColor Inn & Resort • 30A Inn & Suites • Home2 Suites By Hilton Santa Rosa Beach
One of the best ways to experience the Emerald Coast is by exploring Scenic Highway 30A, which is lined with charming coastal towns and beautiful beaches. 30A is located west of Panama City Beach, but it’s also easy to visit from Destin.
Consider staying in Santa Rosa Beach for a convenient, more affordable location if you’re wanting to spend time on Scenic Highway 30A.. Many visitors love biking through the state parks and exploring the unique beach towns scattered along the highway. Plus, you’re only a short drive from many popular restaurants and shopping areas.
For a more luxurious stay, the highly-rated Watercolor Inn & Resort offers exclusive beachfront access, multiple swimming pools, and a prime location on 30A. For a more budget-friendly option closer to Destin, Home2 Suites By Hilton Santa Rosa Beach is a great choice.
Keep in mind that this shoreline is packed with private beaches, which can be frustrating for those wanting public access. Parking can also be difficult, so you might need to walk a bit to reach the public beach.
Pros of Staying in the Santa Rosa Beach Neighborhood:
- Prime location to visit 30A
- Popular for outdoor activities, such as biking
- Excellent dining options
Cons of Staying in the Santa Rosa Beach Neighborhood:
- Fewer public beaches
- Very busy crowds during peak season
- Further from Destin’s main attractions

Tips for Staying in Destin
Prepare for Traffic

There are only a few main roads in Destin, with Highway 98 running parallel to the beach and through the city. During peak tourist season, it’s not uncommon to find standstill traffic for miles since Destin is among the most popular places to visit in Florida.
The Mid-Bay Bridge, which connects Niceville to Destin, is very congested with traffic in the summer. Plan accordingly by leaving early! I also recommend booking accommodations near the attractions you’re most interested in to make the most of your time.
Visit During the Offseason

Most people visit Destin to lounge on the beach or swim in our emerald-colored waters. For this reason, summer is extremely popular for visitors between Memorial Day and Labor Day. However, you’ll find very few crowds if you visit during the offseason, typically between October and February.
The weather is cooler, but most of the main attractions are still open, and you won’t need a reservation for the most popular restaurants. The beaches are also still open for walks and watching the sunset, even if you won’t be able to swim in the ocean. You’ll enjoy a much quieter atmosphere, save some money, and won’t need to fight crowds.
To decide the perfect month to plan a trip, read Ethan’s guide to the best time to visit Florida.
Make Dining Reservations

Destin is home to a fantastic dining scene, including many locally owned restaurants. Some of the most popular eateries, such as Boshamps Seafood and Oyster House, will draw big crowds and long wait times for a table.
Whenever possible, make a reservation in advance, as this will save you valuable time and help you make the most of your visit. Consider dining for a late lunch if you aren’t able to make a reservation to beat the crowds.
Know the Beach Flags

Safety is extremely important when swimming in the ocean. Each day, the beach has a colored flag to represent the water’s safety conditions.
For instance, a double red flag means the water is closed for safety, while a single red flag means high hazard or strong current. Similarly, purple flags signal dangerous marine life present in the water, such as sharks or jellyfish.
Every year, we hear unfortunate stories of tourists who get stuck in rip currents after swimming in unsafe conditions. Make sure you understand the flag system before swimming in the ocean and know what to do if you get stuck in a rip current.
Public Beach Access is Limited

Destin has become increasingly popular among tourists, and our small town doesn’t necessarily have the infrastructure to support thousands of visitors. To make matters worse, much of the beach is considered private property, and there are fewer public beach access points. This is extremely frustrating for both tourists and locals, and it creates congestion on the limited public beach space.
If you’re hoping to spend your days on the beach, consider booking accommodations that have their own exclusive beachfront property. If not, do research beforehand for public beach access points.
