Best Things to Do in Charlotte
Uptown Charlotte
Discover museums, restaurants, and entertainment in the heart of The Queen City.

📍 Google Maps | 👉 Book This Southern Charm Historical City Cart Tour on Viator
One of the first distinctions you should know when you come to the Queen City is that “downtown” is called “uptown.” This is supposedly due to the fact that Uptown is at a slightly higher elevation than the surrounding areas. Nevertheless, this is the heart of the city and where many of its biggest attractions are located.
You’ll likely be staying in Uptown, so spend some time exploring the museums and dining out. I recommend strolling around the parks as well. First Ward Park, Romare Bearden Park, and The Green are my favorites.
Just be aware that Uptown isn’t the best place for window shopping. Aside from museums, restaurants, and entertainment venues, it’s a lot of banks and office buildings. If you’re looking to explore local shops, check out NoDa, Plaza Midwood, South End, and other neighborhoods.

Displays include championship cars, trophies, race suits, and tributes to NASCAR drivers. The museum also has interactive exhibits like racing simulators and the High Octane Theater. The Chevrolet and Glory Road exhibits are especially popular.
The Charlotte Motor Speedway, which is where races take place, is located about a half hour northeast of Concord. Hendricks Motorsports Museum is also near here.

I hope you enjoyed this Charlotte guide! Next up, see my article on the best things to do in North Carolina!

I’m in charge of planning ladies getaways ( 55+ age group). I’d like information about holiday events after Thanksgiving and before Christmas Eve.
Good morning My wife and I are going to Ballantine this coming weekend . I like what you had to say about NoDo . Would you have any recommendations for things to do in Ballantine?
Hi Dennis! Ballantyne is about 45 minutes to an hour outside of Uptown Charlotte. I’d say the biggest thing to do near Ballantyne is visit Carowinds! There are also plenty of shopping centers like Ballantyne Village or Blakeney Town Center. If you like more local flavor (since you said NoDa interests you), I’d recommend the small nearby town of Matthews. Otherwise, try and make your way into Charlotte if you can! NoDa and Plaza Midwood are my favorite areas of the city. I also have a guide to where to stay in Charlotte, which you may find helpful.
How long is the whitewater park open as we head to winter? We plan on coming the first week of November and I’m assuming it starts to get a bit cold if you’re getting wet.
Thank you.
Hi Curt! The Whitewater Center is pretty much open year-round, so you’ll definitely still be able to visit and enjoy some activities while you’re in Charlotte. However, rafting may or may not be available the first week of November, as winter activities usually kick in around mid-November. I recommend calling them at (704) 391-3900 to get confirmation. I hope this helps!
I loved your article and tips! I am moving to Charlotte and willing to learn more about the city with locals (or formal locals). My husband will work at University City area. Which neighborhoods would you recommend us to live with out 7 years old boy, with good schools and entertainment options?
Hi Karen!
Congratulations on your upcoming move to the Queen City! I actually went to UNCC so I know the University City area well. Choosing a neighborhood will depend on a lot of factors, including how far you want to be from UNCC’s campus. That being said, Plaza Midwood and NoDa are nice areas, and nearby Huntersville and Concord might be worth checking out.
Great list of things to do along with the locations to map out your visit. I would be interested to know where to stay and what accommodations are available especially those that have discounts for seniors.
Hi Laura, I’m glad you found the article helpful! I also have a Where to Stay in Charlotte guide which overviews the best areas with hotel recommendations for each. You’ll also find mini guides offering things like restaurant and attraction recommendations under each neighborhood. I hope this helps!
Thank you for your insight!
Excellent and valuable and well laid out things to do. photos. description. links to maps. The best
Do not forget to add the Sullenberger Aviation Museum!!
