37 San Francisco Date Ideas

Rowboat on Blue Heron Lake

Rent a romantic rowboat and paddle around this sparkling lake in Golden Gate Park.

My partner took me on a date to Blue Heron Lake to celebrate my birthday, and it was one of my favorite things we’ve done in San Francisco.

Blue Heron Lake, formerly known as Stow Lake, is a prominent attraction in Golden Gate Park. The lake is super peaceful, with abundant birdlife and gorgeous trees all around.

At $26 an hour, renting a rowboat here is great for a budget-friendly date. The cafe at the boathouse sells snacks and drinks that you can take onto your boat. Rowboats are limited and are first come, first served.

Sunset Cruise on the Bay

Indulge in a romantic evening on the water while viewing San Francisco’s best sights.

San Francisco’s romantic side comes to life on the water. Sailing on the San Francisco Bay is one of the best ways to treat your partner to an unforgettable evening.

I’ve taken many boat rides around the San Francisco Bay, but my favorite time to go is during sunset. The sunset will turn the water gold, and the San Francisco skyline begins to twinkle.

There are several great sunset cruise tours to choose from, and many tours offer champagne or cocktails to make your evening extra special.

California Academy of Sciences NightLife

Explore rainforests, marine life, and natural history with this adult-only museum night.

The Academy of Sciences is many things: a natural history museum, aquarium, planetarium, and jungle. But on Thursday nights, it transforms into even more.

Bartenders serve craft cocktails, DJs play live music on a dance floor, and couples everywhere sneak off to explore secluded exhibits. Head up to the “living roof” at sunset to see panoramic views of the city.

This special event happens every Thursday from 6 – 10 pm and is only available to the 21+ crowd.

Picnic at Alamo Square Park

This park has the best views of San Francisco and the iconic Painted Ladies.

Alamo Square Park is the crown jewel of SF’s NoPa neighborhood. This park is where you’ll find the famous Painted Ladies, an iconic row of pastel Victorian houses. There are also bathrooms and picnic tables — everything you need for a nice picnic with stunning views.

Whenever I need to plan a last-minute and budget-friendly date, Alamo Square is my go-to spot. I just grab some drinks and a picnic blanket, and I’m all set.

Lakehouse Jazz

Catch an intimate jazz show inside the Blue Heron Boathouse in Golden Gate Park.

Looking for a hidden gem to impress your date? Look no further. Lakehouse Jazz is a surprise jazz show inside San Francisco’s most unique concert venue: the Blue Heron Lake Boathouse.

The boathouse is small and seats less than 25 visitors, so each seat has a fantastic view of the musicians performing. The show is usually around 1.5 hours with an intermission in the middle. The boathouse bar serves beer, wine, and cocktails, along with some non-alcoholic options.

Lakehouse Jazz was one of my favorite dates I’ve had in San Francisco. My partner and I both loved the intimate nature of the venue and the chance to support local musicians!

Kayak on the Bay

See San Francisco from a new angle by renting a kayak and exploring the water.

My partner took me kayaking for my birthday a few years ago, and I loved it! We paddled underneath the Bay Bridge and near the Embarcadero. We got to see the skyline from a unique angle, explore the various piers, and bask in the sun.

We rented from City Kayaks, and they were great. Rental rates are about $35 an hour for a single kayak, or $70 an hour for a double kayak. Book a guided tour if you don’t feel confident kayaking independently.

Japanese Tea Garden

Enjoy tea and Japanese small plates among Buddhist shrines in this outdoor oasis.

San Francisco’s Japanese influence shines brightly in Golden Gate Park’s Japanese Tea Garden. The garden features large pagodas, statues of Buddha, a Zen garden, Koi fish, and a Tea House.

My partner and I spent around 2 hours here admiring the tranquil scenery and dining at the Tea House. The Tea House has indoor and outdoor seating with stunning views over the water, fish, and flowers.

Visiting the Japanese Tea Garden is free for San Francisco residents but will cost $14 for non-residents. Want to know a secret? There’s a “free hour” for all visitors from 9 am to 10 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Lindy in the Park

Learn how to swing dance with this welcoming community in Golden Gate Park.

Swing dancing with your date might seem like a very old-fashioned way of flirting, but there’s nothing old about this lively dance party. At Lindy in the Park, partners of all ages can cozy up to their date, learn some new dance moves, and have fun!

Lindy in the Park happens every Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm in Golden Gate Park. Instructors lead an official lesson for beginners at 12 pm. Pop in for just an hour, or stay for the whole time.

Roller Skating at the Church of 8 Wheels

Go roller skating under disco lights in a refurbished old church.

Roller skating is back in a big way, and there’s no better place to skate than at the Church of 8 Wheels. The light-up skates, disco balls, funky music, and lively atmosphere make for a downright groovy time.

This is one of my favorite SF activities. It’s so much fun, the crowd is super friendly, and it’s hilarious to watch your partner stumble around on skates.

The Church of 8 Wheels offers Tuesday, Friday, and weekend skate sessions. Evenings after 8 pm are reserved for the 18+ crowd. It’s a $15 entry, plus $5 if you need to rent skates.

Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Gardens

Romance blossoms at this Dutch-inspired area of Golden Gate Park.

📍 Google Maps | Queen Wilhelmina Garden Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates

The tulip gardens of Golden Gate Park are one of the park’s best features. Each spring, thousands of tulips bloom in a small grassy meadow next to the historic Dutch Windmill. It’s a great spot for a romantic picnic!

Visiting the tulip garden is free, making this a great budget-friendly date. Make sure you go at the right time of year. The tulips are usually in bloom from late February through April.

Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio

Enjoy drinks and dim sum at this underground jazz club in Civic Center.

📍 Google Maps | Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Special Occasions, Anniversaries

Like jazz? Then check out this small speakeasy-style jazz club in the heart of San Francisco.

Mr. Tipple’s is one of the best bars in San Francisco. It’s a sexy spot — intimate tables are lit by candlelight and the sounds of saxaphone drift through the air. It’s my go-to when picking a unique, upscale but still casual spot.

Mr. Tipple’s kitchen serves up delectable dim sum options like dumplings and bao buns. The cocktails are great, but where Mr. Tipple’s stands out is its entertainment. Local musicians grace the stage nearly every night of the week, performing all genres of jazz and blues.

Exploratorium After Dark

This popular interactive museum comes alive on Thursday nights with adult-only entertainment.

The Exploratorium is an ideal date for the curiosity-driven. The museum has different exhibits on science, art, and human perception.

The Exploratorium After Dark opens from 6 pm – 10 pm on Thursday nights. The lights are dimmed, and friendly bartenders serve drinks. Most romantic of all? No kids allowed.

Batteries to Bluffs Trail

This easy hiking trail in the Presidio boasts stunning ocean views around every turn.

📍 Google Maps | Batteries to Bluffs Trail Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Adventurous Dates

San Francisco’s epic hiking trails are the perfect date for nature lovers… or just for folks who appreciate a great view. The Batteries to Bluffs Trail is one of my personal favorites. My partner and I go running here often, and the scenery never gets old!

The Batteries to Bluffs Trail is one of the best hikes in San Francisco. While on the trail, you’ll have views of the Pacific Ocean the entire time. This trail contains many stairs, so it’s not ADA-accessible. Check out the nearby Coastal Trail for a paved trail that is wheelchair-friendly.

👉 Pro Tip: While you’re exploring the Presidio, jaunt over to Lover’s Lane to keep the romantic vibes going.

Watch a Show at the Orpheum Theater

Catch a famous Broadway show at San Francisco’s premier theater destination.

📍 Google Maps | Orpheum Theater Website | 💖 Best for: Special Occasions, Anniversaries

The Orpheum Theater hosts some of the most famous musicals to hit the stage. I’ve seen Rent, The Book of Mormon, and My Fair Lady here, and they’ve all been incredible. Dress up and treat your date to a fancy night out!

Seeing a show at The Orpheum is a great idea for special occasions or anniversaries. Tickets can be pricey, usually starting around $75. Buy in advance for better prices and seat selection.

SF Opera House

Watch a famous ballet or opera performance in this Historical Landmark.

📍 Google Maps | SF Opera House Website | 💖 Best for: Special Occasions, Anniversaries

The Opera House is the place to see world-class ballet and opera in San Francisco. It’s a perfect spot for a romantic evening and worldly delights.

Even if you don’t know much about ballet, visiting the Opera House is worth it for the stunning architecture. The Opera House dates back to the 1930s and is one of San Francisco’s most beautiful buildings.

The best part of the SF Opera House? Prices are reasonable. I’ve found tickets as cheap as $30 for a show.

Watch a Comedy Show

San Francisco’s numerous comedy venues host unforgettable acts.

Treat your date to an evening of laughs at one of San Francisco’s comedy clubs. Famous venues include the Punch Line in downtown and Cobb’s Comedy Club in North Beach.

Many comedy clubs also offer dinner and drinks throughout the night. Tickets are usually affordable, but visitors to Cobb’s should know there is a two-drink minimum on top of the ticket price.

Arcade Games at Emporium

Challenge your date to pool, air hockey, skee ball, and more.

Bored of bars with no activities? Check out Emporium, a sprawling arcade bar on lively Divisadero Street. This bar has two floors of games like air hockey, pinball, basketball, pool, and Pacman.

The bar can get crowded and loud on weekend nights, especially when the DJs start playing music. For a quieter experience and a chance to talk to your date, try visiting between Sunday and Thursday.

Karaoke at The Mint

Treat your date to a fun evening filled with singing, dancing, and laughing.

I’ll be honest — singing onstage in front of people was never my idea of a good time. However, I completely changed my mind when I did karaoke at the Mint.

The Mint has a bar, stage, and screens displaying the lyrics of chosen songs. The room seats about 30 people, most of whom will sing along with the person performing. It’s a surprisingly communal environment with lots of cheering, laughing, and dancing.

Coffee Date at Cafe Réveille

Enjoy coffee and lunch underneath flowing willow trees at this Lower Haight cafe.

📍 Google Maps | Cafe Reveille Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates

San Francisco has no shortage of coffee shops, but Cafe Réveille has the best ambiance. Its coffee, food, and service are all fantastic. Even better is the plethora of indoor and outdoor seating available to customers.

Cafe Réveille has locations in Russian Hill, Mission Bay, and Lower Haight. I’m partial to the Lower Haight location. It’s on a tree-lined side street with gorgeous outdoor seating and minimal traffic.

Dinner at Foreign Cinema

Wine and dine with high-end cuisine while watching a movie in a glowing courtyard.

Foreign Cinema is the most romantic and one of the best San Francisco restaurants. It’s perfect for an unforgettable date night. The restaurant screens old movies in an outdoor courtyard underneath the glow of market lights.

Foreign Cinema continuously stands out for its impeccable cuisine, extensive drink list, and quaint atmosphere. Dinner is pricey, so save this for a special occasion.

Go Bowling in the Presidio

Gourmet food and stunning views at a bowling alley? Only in the Presidio.

📍 Google Maps | Presidio Bowl Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Adventurous Dates

Presidio Bowl is the nicest bowling alley I’ve ever been to. It’s weirdly upscale for a sport that usually involves eating $1 pizza between rounds and trying to block out the noise from a kid’s birthday party in the next lane.

At Presidio Bowl, you’ll find sophisticated small plates and 19 different types of wine, all of which you can enjoy on the outdoor patio with a fire pit.

Besides having great amenities, the atmosphere at Presidio Bowl is just plain fun. Weekend nights are usually packed with couples, small groups, and larger parties all joining in the excitement.

Play Tennis or Pickleball

Try a new sport at one of San Francisco’s 120 tennis courts.

San Francisco can turn anyone into a tennis lover. The city has over 60 reservable courts and 60 first-come, first-served courts. Many courts are on hilltops with beautiful views over the city — a beautiful backdrop for a date.

Plus, what better way to romanticize a sporting event than by playing a game that has “love” as one of its scores?

Dessert at Miette

Sample French macarons, gourmet chocolates, and more at this charming candy shop.

Skip dinner and go straight to dessert at Miette, a French patisserie in Hayes Valley. The cute pastel building with its striped awning beckons visitors to step in.

Once inside, sample gourmet cakes, macarons, baked goods, chocolates, and other sweets. Miette has an intimate environment with very few seats, but lucky patrons can grab a table either indoors or outdoors.

De Young Art Museum

This fine arts museum in Golden Gate Park is one of the most romantic museums in the city.

The de Young is one of the best museums in San Francisco. It houses a collection of fine arts paintings and sculptures, along with rotating seasonal exhibits.

Wander around three stories of historic artwork and enjoy drinks and small plates at the outdoor museum cafe. Or pop up to the observation deck for panoramic views of San Francisco.

Admission to the de Young Museum is $20. Seasonal exhibits require an additional ticket purchase.

Ice Skating

Union Square turns into the city’s most popular ice rink every winter.

📍 Google Maps | Union Square Ice Rink Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Special Occasions

Each winter, hundreds of couples flock to Union Square to go ice skating, sip on warm mugs of hot chocolate, and view the large Christmas tree. Union Square’s ice rink usually opens on November 1 and closes in mid-January. Going for a skate is one of my favorite SF activities in the wintertime.

The full name is technically The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Kaiser Permanente. Whisper that in your date’s ear to demonstrate both your romantic charm and understanding of corporate sponsorships.

Sunset at Sutro Baths

Watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean at these popular hillside ruins.

View at the Sutro Baths during sunset

📍 Google Maps | Sutro Baths Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates

The Sutro Baths are not actual places to swim, but rather the remains of an old bathhouse from a hundred years ago. Now, it’s owned by the National Parks system and is a popular spot for hiking, exploring old caves, and watching the sunset.

Sutro Baths is a perfect spot to have a date. I’ve seen multiple couples take engagement or wedding photos here. There are many spots to sit on the hillside overlooking the water. Bring jackets and a blanket.

Ocean Beach Bonfire

Enjoy San Francisco’s largest beach by building a free bonfire in the evening.

The author, Laura McFarland with her friends around a fire pit that they made in Ocean Beach
My friends and I after building our fire pit in the sand at Ocean Beach.

📍 Google Maps | Ocean Beach Fire Pits Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Special Occasions

One of the most romantic things to do at Ocean Beach is to cozy up near an evening bonfire while admiring golden hour on the water.

Ocean Beach has about 10 different fire pits where couples or groups can build a bonfire. They’re first come first served, and you need to provide your own firewood. No fires are permitted between November 1 and February 28.

We couldn’t snag a fire pit, so we just dug a hole in the sand far away from everyone and made our own. It’s so much fun and makes for a memorable evening!

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Taste fresh produce, seafood, and more at the largest farmer’s market in San Francisco.

Colorful flower bouquets in Ferry Plaza Farmers Market
Fresh flower bouquets are available at the Ferry Building.

📍 Google Maps | Ferry Plaza Farmers Market Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates

The Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market is one of my favorite places in San Francisco. Artisan meat and cheese, fresh-caught oysters, fresh-baked bread, local and organic produce, coffee… it’s heaven. Combine epicurean pleasures with a stunning location right on the waterfront, and you’ve got a perfect date.

The Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market happens three times a week, but the most popular time to go is Saturday morning. Head there before 10 am to get first pick.

Giants Baseball Game

Watch San Francisco’s baseball team while enjoying a fresh ocean breeze and stadium snacks.

Cold beers on a sunny day while watching baseball is a perfect date.

The San Francisco Giants are one of the most beloved sports teams in the Bay Area. Their stadium, Oracle Park, is absolutely gorgeous, with surrounding views of the San Francisco Bay. I’ve gone to games at Oracle Park to celebrate anniversaries, and birthdays, or just for a casual date night.

Tickets can be as cheap as $10 and are a great option for a budget-friendly date.

Sofar Sounds Concert

These intimate surprise shows take place in a new location each week.

Sofar Sounds specializes in providing intimate concerts in surprise locations for small crowds. Venues are inside small businesses, on rooftops, or even in someone’s living room.

You can narrow down what type of experience you want: indoor or outdoor, acoustic set or high energy, living room or small business venue. The event details are revealed via text 36 hours before the show.

Sunset at Twin Peaks

Enjoy panoramic views of San Francisco from the highest natural viewpoint in the city.

The author, Laura McFarland sitting on the Twin Peaks lookout

📍 Google Maps | Twin Peaks Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Adventurous Dates

For an easy, budget-friendly date, drive up to the Twin Peaks lookout before the sun sets. Pack some food and many, many blankets. It can get cold and windy when the sun goes down, but the view as Market Street begins to light up is worth staying for!

Parking can be tough, so try to get there well before sunset. Hike 5 minutes up to the top of the mountain, or just sit on the balcony in the lookout area. Bring coins to use the telescopes.

Off the Grid Food Trucks

Off the Grid operates several pop-up food truck events around the Bay Area. These weekly markets feature up to 20 different vendors selling street food, drinks, desserts, and more. Go on a Friday evening for occasional live music.

Off the Grid’s largest events tend to be in the summer and early fall, when the sun sets later and the weather is nicer. The most popular market is at Fort Mason, where the delicious food is complemented by gorgeous views of the SF Bay.

🌐 Great Ocean Highway Website | 💖 Best for: First Dates, Adventurous Dates

The Great Ocean Highway is a beautiful road spanning the length of Ocean Beach. During the week it’s a normal road, but on weekends it closes to traffic and becomes a place for thousands of residents to walk, run, bike, or skate.

Take your date on a weekend bike ride along the Great Ocean Highway with stunning views of the beach and ocean. Don’t have a bike? Lyft operates grab-and-go rental bikes from hundreds of locations around the city. Or, opt to rent from one of the local rental businesses in the Richmond District.

Baker Beach is my favorite place for a beach picnic. The location is less exposed to wind than Ocean Beach, and the views of the Golden Gate Bridge are simply perfect.

I usually make the date fancier by bringing a picnic blanket, flowers, food, drinks, and a speaker to play music.

Golden State Warriors Basketball Game

One of the best parts of living in San Francisco right now is having the best basketball team in the country. The Warriors have won four NBA finals in the past ten years, most recently in 2022. The energy at a Warriors game is electric and makes for a super fun night.

The only downside to the Warriors’ success is that tickets to games are incredibly expensive, usually starting around $100. However, it’s a great splurge for a special occasion.

Staycation at the Fairmont San Francisco

Panoramic views, luxurious rooms, and a spa define this classic San Francisco hotel in Nob Hill.

On my partner and I’s anniversary, disaster struck. We were supposed to go camping in Marin, and it was pouring rain — not ideal weather for sleeping outside. Instead, we decided to treat ourselves to a night at the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel. It was the perfect way to celebrate!

The Fairmont is located in Nob Hill, one of the best places to stay in SF. We chose the Fairmont because it has a great restaurant, a sauna and steam room, and rooms with fantastic views. Staying here made us feel like we were on an expensive vacation without even leaving the city!

Ferry to Sausalito

Take a 30-minute ferry ride on the Bay to this picturesque seaside town in Marin County.

Take the ferry to Sausalito if you want to see San Franciso from the water but don’t want to pay for a private boat tour! Ferries usually leave from the San Francisco Ferry Building. There are multiple routes, but I recommend going to Sausalito for a cute date.

Sausalito is one of the best day trips from San Francisco, and it’s just a 30-minute boat ride away. Indulge in fresh seafood and tasty chocolates while you wander around the walkable downtown. Ferries to Sausalito cost about $14 one way.
