4 Best Neighborhoods & Areas to Stay in Poznań

Poznań’s Old Town lies along the left bank of the Warta River. Grunwald is to the southwest, while Jeżyce is to the west. The Nowy Miasto (New Town) neighborhood is across the Warta from the Old Town.

Stare Miasto (Old Town)

Old Town is where the most magic happens inPoznań. Bright buildings line the Old Market Square, housing a treasure trove of attractions. Museums transport you back in time through every era of Polish history, and even all the way to ancient Egypt. 

Restaurants here offer hearty, authentic Polish and European cuisine. The Town Hall showcases a unique take on a cuckoo clock, with two mechanical goats emerging every day at noon to butt heads.

Old Town is, hands down, my top pick for first-timers to Poznań. It still functions as the city center and is popular with locals and tourists alike. You can also find some of the best hotels in town here. 

Hotel Kolegiacki is my top pick in Poznań. It’s smack in the middle of town and commands great views from the rooftop dining area. The rooms are large and feature either modern or elegant 19th century aesthetics. The property is more expensive than nearby ones, but still quite affordable by Western standards.

Another favorite of mine is the Ibis Poznań Stare Miasto. It’s a short walk from the Old Market Square, removing it from the crowds of tourists. It’s also easy to get to from the bus or train stations (I recommend these modes of transportation over flying).

Pros of Staying in Stare Miasto:

• Largest concentration of cultural attractions
• Lots of amazing Polish and international restaurants
• Close to a wide variety of shops 

Cons of Staying in Stare Miasto:

• More crowded than other areas, especially in peak season
• Hotels can be more expensive than in other areas

Grunwald

Grunwald shows the more modern side of Poznań but never feels overdeveloped. There are office buildings and the like, but there are also spacious parks, plus cozy bars and eateries. Enea Stadion, the local sports stadium, hosts sports matches and concerts and is one of the most popular event venues in Poznań.

Grunwald has several great options for places to stay, including Leo Hostel. This property offers bright, simple rooms and a shared kitchen in a more secluded setting than many other properties featured in this article. It’s still only a 5-minute tram ride away from all the fun in the Old Town.

Overall, this is a great place to stay if, like me, you’re a digital nomad and prefer avoiding the more touristy parts of town for a longer stay. It’s not my first choice for first-timers, given the general lack of cultural attractions, but most hotels here aren’t too far from the city center.

• Great restaurants, bars, and parks
• Quieter, local feeling in many places

Cons of Staying in Grunwald:

• Not as many hotel or restaurant options as in the Old Town

Jeżyce

Jeżyce is the trendy part of Poznań, where old residential buildings sport quirky, modern street art and restaurants favor a more international scope. It’s also a great place to find more vegetarian and vegan options (Polish cuisine is famously meat-centric). 

The large lake, Jezioro Kiekrzskie, is a popular place for walks, sailing, and even windsurfing (not something you’d usually associate with Poland!). Jeżyce is also home to Poznań’s Botanical Garden and other smaller lakes and parks.

Additionally, Jeżyce has an excellent selection of stays, ranging from cozy hostels to world-renowned luxury chains. Cooltour is perfect for budget travelers, offering simple, high-quality rooms and apartments at surprisingly low prices. Hotel Mercure, on the other hand, has all the comforts you could want at a four-star property.

Pros of Staying in Jeżyce:

• Good combination of budget and luxury stays
• Greater variety of international/vegan restaurants
• Closest to the airport

Cons of Staying in Jeżyce:

• Artsy atmosphere may not appeal to all tastes
• Not as many cultural attractions

Nowe Miasto (New Town)

Nowe Miasto, or the New Town area, is my top choice for families visiting Poznań. It’s just across the river from the Old Town and has more kid-friendly attractions than the other neighborhoods. The picturesque Lake Malta is a great place for picnics and the New Zoo lies on the eastern shores.

This neighborhood is also home to the Malta Ski amusement park, which features skiing in winter and carnival rides in summer. There are also great shopping options in Nowe Miasto, such as the massive Posnania Mall. 

I recommend Hotel HP Park Poznań Malta Sport for families (or anyone) wishing to stay in Nowe Miasto. Its location on the shores of Lake Malta can’t be beat, and it features family rooms and a restaurant/bar overlooking the lake. If you’d rather be closer to the city center, Śródka Boutique Hotel is a great choice.

• Lots of family-friendly attractions
• Close to Old Town, but quieter
• Peaceful, local feeling

Cons of Staying in Nowe Miasto:

• Not as many options for places to stay
• Some properties are farther from main attractions

Tips for Staying in Poznań

Book in Advance

Poznań may not be as popular as other cities in Poland, but it’s not obscure either. As such, properties can book up fast during peak and shoulder season. Make your reservations well in advance to secure the best deals on the place you want.

Take The Train (Or Bus) To Poznań

You’ll probably first stay in Warsaw before traveling to Poznań. There’s an airport in Poznań, but I recommend coming here via train. It’s cheaper than flying from Warsaw and lets you see more of the country. Not only that, but it saves you the hassle of going through security again.

You can also take the bus from Warsaw, my new favorite city, to save a little more money.

Follow Church Etiquette

Poznań has several stunning cathedrals showcasing a wide variety of Western architectural traditions. Many are open to the public, but tourists are kindly asked to refrain from visiting during mass. You can find service times on the churches’ websites (look them up on Google Maps, then translate the pages).

There may also be dress codes, usually prohibiting shorts or short skirts, tank tops, and other more revealing clothing. Short sleeves should not be a problem.

Retail Businesses Close On Sunday In Poland

Retail businesses close on Sunday in Poland (restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores remain open, so you won’t go hungry). If you need to shop for any non-food items, plan accordingly. The streets may be a little more crowded with locals enjoying an afternoon outing, but the pace of life in Poznań is never hectic.

Explore Cultural Attractions

While retail stores often shutter on Sundays, museums and major attractions usually stay open over the weekend but close on Monday. Some of the less well-known museums may not have exhibits in English (but you can always snap a photo and use Google or a similar service to translate). In my opinion, this cultural scene is part of what makes Poznań a hidden gem. 

There are, of course, other things to do in Poznań than visit museums. It’s a smaller city and may not have the nightlife of Kraków or the excitement of Warsaw. But it has strengths of its own that the two larger and more popular cities lack.

Public Transportation

Despite being a smaller city, Poznań has an extensive public transportation system. Buses and trams connect all parts of the city and are easy to use and affordable (but maybe a little crowded at peak hours). There are also ride-share apps such as Bolt and BlaBlaCar that can get you to further attractions.

Learn a Little Polish

The Polish language is notoriously difficult. Complex grammar and a few unfamiliar sounds make this one of the harder language barriers to hurdle. However, many people speak at least a little English. 

It’s still good to learn basic travel phrases. The one essential thing, though, is to figure out the deceptively familiar alphabet and its many consonant clusters.
