If there is such a thing as formative years, then I spent mine in Jackson Hole! In total, I’ve lived here for the past 30 years on and off, and it’s a place I just love.

There are many options for unique lodging in and around Jackson and the surrounding valley of Jackson Hole, but if this is your first time in the area, then I recommend staying in the town of Jackson itself. Here, you can enjoy nightlife, shopping, galleries, and dining.

My top hotel pick, The Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa, is located in Jackson. This beautiful hotel features a top-notch staff that will treat you like royalty. I recommend The Virginian Lodge for families looking to stay in the area. It’s not far from the town square and has family-friendly amenities like a pool.

Wyoming’s state sign proudly announces to travelers that it is “Like No Place on Earth,” and Jackson Hole embraces that.

Want to nestle down in a tiny cabin along a creek for a romantic getaway? Or take in wide-open expanses of sagebrush and tumbleweed at a dude ranch? Maybe you’re on a backpacking trip with a tight budget? Read further and I’ll share the best places to stay in Jackson Hole — from Teton Village to Moran Junction.

Jackson Hole is a valley located in the northwestern corner of Wyoming. It’s bordered to the west by Grand Teton National Park and to the east by the Gros Ventre Range. The two primary hubs of activity in Jackson Hole are the town of Jackson and the ski area, Teton Village, which is nine miles away.

What makes Jackson unique is its old-fashioned, small-town appeal, combined with the hustle and bustle of a destination summer and winter resort. It’s the perfect place for first-time visitors to stay.

Jackson’s town square is the hub of activity for visitors. It can be accessed through massive antler arches (pictured above) and opens onto an inviting grassy area that’s perfect for picnics. Shoppers wandering the wooden boardwalks will find western art galleries alongside t-shirt and souvenir shops.

A short walk from the town square is The Virginian Lodge, which is an excellent option for families. It has plenty of on-site amenities like restaurants, a pool, and spa. There’s even bunk beds for the kiddos.

Blocks off the main square, is my #1 hotel pick, the Rusty Parrot Lodge. It’s located in a quieter neighborhood that retains its peaceful, residential feel. An abundance of restaurants and bars are all within easy walking distance, including the rooftop lounge at The Cloudveil, which offers views of Snow King Mountain Resort, with night skiing in winter and a half-mile-long Alpine slide in summer.

Budget-minded travelers should consider a stay at the Cache House. It is a stone’s throw from the Jackson rodeo, which is every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night!

Pros of Staying in Jackson:

  • Easy walking distance to shops and nightlife
  • Majority of restaurants nearby
  • Alpine Slide, Western shoot out on the town square, and the rodeo!

Cons of Staying in Jackson:

  •  A lot of hustle and bustle
  • Nature is close, but not right outside your door

👉 Best Area For Active Travelers | ✨ Best Teton Village Hotels: Four Seasons ResortThe HostelTeton Club

Teton Village is the base area of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. This is where I recommend staying for active and adventurous travelers.

In winter, Teton Village offers an upbeat apres-ski vibe to fun-sters who want the exhilaration of skiing at one of the nation’s best resorts. In summertime, the slopes transform into dynamic mountain bike trails, peaceful hiking paths, and stunning views at the summit, accessible via the aerial tram, which cruises directly over the Teton Club

Private homes and condos are tucked up into the trees throughout the village, while the majority of hotel lodging borders the base area. Great burgers and shopping can be found at the Mangy Moose Saloon and Emporium, which is a short walk from my top budget hotel pick, The Hostel

On the other hand, consider the Four Seasons Resort if you’re looking for modern comfort and luxury. Here, guests will have a range of amenities from ski rentals and lessons to a spa and on-site restaurants. You’re sure to have a cozy, comfortable stay.

Pros of Staying in Teton Village:

  • Skiing, hiking, biking, and nature right outside your door
  • Beat the crowds driving from town for the first tracks in winter!
  • Activities and restaurants are all within easy walking distance

Cons of Staying in Teton Village:

  • You will want a rental car to check out town
  • Hotels and condos are very pricey
  • Fewer options for dining and nightlife
  • 17 miles from the airport

👉 Best Area For Nature Lovers | ✨ Best Teton National Park Hotels: Jackson Lake LodgeJenny Lake LodgeSignal Mountain Lodge

I once overheard a woman complain to her companion that she didn’t understand the appeal of Grand Teton National Park. “After all,” she said, “you just drive by and look at them.” Boy, was she misinformed!

Teton National Park is a playground that covers approximately 484 square miles, offering vacationers the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature… but on steroids.

At the north end of the park, rustic and historic lodging options such as Jackson Lake Lodge or Signal Mountain Lodge provide visitors with spectacular bases for endless hiking and wildlife viewing. These accommodations are also perfect for mountain climbing novices to experts, and guided float trips on the Snake River.

Jenny Lake Lodge, located closer to the town of Jackson, offers guests a similarly unique Western experience. Surprisingly enough, all of the lakes in the park have water warm enough to swim in! Even at an elevation of 7,000 feet.

Pros of Staying in Teton National Park:

  • Spectacular vistas – After all, it is a National Park!
  • Wildlife at your door, and sometimes in your cabin
  • A unique western US experience not found anywhere else in the world

Cons of Staying in Teton National Park:

  • Nightlife consists of a card game with your family (or nightlife is almost nil)
  • You will definitely need a rental car
  • The short summer season creates problematic booking unless done WAY in advance

👉 Best Area For a Western Experience | ✨ Best Jackson Hole (North) Hotels: Triangle X RanchTogwotee Mountain LodgeThe Hatchet Resort

Looking for a Western Experience? Look no further than Jackson Hole (North). Think horseback rides, s’mores around a campfire, and stars galore.

This is the area to stay if you want to be close to nature and visit Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Wildlife is especially abundant in this part of Jackson Hole, from coyotes howling in the evening to the distinctive call of Sandhill Cranes.

I recommend staying at a dude ranch, which is a unique type of lodge known for its rustic, Western appeal. These types of accommodations offer seasonal opportunities to ride horses, snowmobile, cross-country ski, or visit Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

Book a stay at Triangle X Ranch for authentic Western experiences and breathtaking natural surroundings. It’s the only remaining guest ranch within Teton National Park.

Note that Triangle X Ranch and Togwotee Mountain Lodge close their doors and shutter their windows at the end of September, opening again in December.

Another accommodation choice is Hatchet Resort, a quaint cluster of cabins and a tiny restaurant nestled at the base of Togwotee Pass. It’s also seasonal, though, and reopens in May after the spring runoff and what locals call “mud season.”

Although I recommend the abovementioned properties for getting a true Old West experience, the majority of properties in town remain open during the “off-season” after summer.

Pros of Staying in Jackson Hole (North):

  • Access to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park
  • Truly the Old West experience
  • Many pet-friendly properties
  • Spectacular views

Cons of Staying in Jackson Hole (North):

  • Rustic means rustic, and many properties are antiquated with paper-thin walls
  • You will definitely need a car
  • Far from town and the airport
  • On-site dining options are the only option… for miles

Tips for Staying in Jackson Hole

Rent a Vehicle

An old abandoned wagon on the ground
It’s a good idea to rent a car when visiting Jackson Hole. But maybe not this one…

If you are flying into Jackson, consider renting a car. Many hotels and lodges offer transportation to and from the airport, and a regular bus service is available between Jackson and Teton Village. However, there are numerous wonderful activities and sights to see, but they are scattered throughout the valley. You will want four-wheel drive in the winter.

High Fashion in Jackson Hole

Posing with Ben Franklin

Sandals during the day and cowboy boots at night are the norm in this mountain community. High heels only get stuck in the cracks of the boardwalk — trust me, I speak from experience!

Layering is also a good idea, as the temperature fluctuation from day to evening can vary significantly.

Maintain a Distance from Wildlife

A fox running around the snow

Jackson Hole is home to a fantastic amount of wildlife. While they may seem approachable and fluffy enough to pet, wildlife refers to undomesticated and unpredictable animals. Take photos, but do so from a distance.

Explore Over the Hill

The small communities of Victor and Driggs, Idaho, are located on the “quiet side of the Tetons” and offer a glimpse of what Jackson was like 20 years ago.

If you want to explore here, consider staying at Grand Targhee Ski Resort on the western slopes of the Teton Range. It offers powdery ski runs in winter and a fantastic Blue Grass Festival in the summer.

Don’t Forget About Sunblock and Hydration

The author Morri Stewart bringing a hydration pack in winter
Me, hydrated and protected from the sun – yes, even in winter!

At 6,400 feet, the sun can be particularly harsh on the skin. I cannot stress enough the importance of using sunblock, whether you’re hiking, skiing, or rafting. Hydration at this elevation is also crucial, especially before hitting the nightlife scene.

I cannot say crime is non-existent in Jackson Hole, but it is minimal. Once upon a time, I would park my car, throw the keys on the floor mat at my feet, and head off to whatever activity. I lock my car now, but I still feel safe walking anywhere, day or night, alone.

  1. My husband and I are wanting to spend some time in Jackson the end of June. We were thinking of staying at Rustic Inn at Jackson Hole Creekside Resort and Spa. It looks wonderful online, but hesitant after reading some reviews. It is our first time to the area and is our anniversary trip. The Rusty Parrot looks really nice as well . What do you know about Rustic Inn? Is it worth the money?

    1. Hi Veronica!
The Rustic Inn was developed at a time when I was traveling and living in Mexico, so I have not visited there to check it out. Which I will in the near future. I love the location; close to Town Square, next to Flat Creek but tucked away just a bit. (Those same qualities can be said for the Rusty Parrot.) You are in walking distance of so much activity, shopping, art and great restaurants.
I HAVE done a tour of the Rusty Parrot which holds a dear spot in my heart. I spent my wedding night there years ago and my first husband was the morning chef there. It is a newer Rusty Parrot (the old building looked more like a Victorian house.) It has a wonderful lounge that looks out on Miller Park with a very open feeling. The rooms are clean and spacious and reflect a modern western Jackson feel. It has been owned by the same family for years. My gut says Rusty Parrot.
Jackson gets super busy, so book your reservation soon!!

If you have more questions, please get back to me and in the meantime, don’t miss out on my other post, https://travellemming.com/things-to-do-in-jackson-hole/ for great options during your anniversary trip!

  2. You are the best! I’ll use the (old fashioned) phone to contact all the places you’ve suggested. This is so helpful! And I hope our family group will get to vacation together in Jackson, wherever we land.
    Gratitude–
    Rayna

  3. Thanks for this wonderful site! This will be our 2nd time in Jackson and we love everything you’ve mentioned about it.
We want to do a family vacation, 6 adults (3 rooms) and 2 kids (2 rooms) for a total of 5 rooms in mid-July. I haven’t been able to find 5 bedroom rentals in/ near town for our dates, 13-18 July. Everything is –of course– very expensive, but mainly, it’s at Teton Village. Do you have any suggestions for how I might find someplace closer to town w that many bedrooms?
Many thanks for considering! And we hope to use your wonderful resource list this summer…
    Very best, Rayna

    1. Hi Rayna!
First, let me say how thrilled I am to have your group come and play in Jackson Hole this summer. It is such a wonderful area to enjoy in July.
That being said, the dates you have chosen are really popular and often book up a year in advance. Houses of the size you are looking for aren’t really to be found in town proper. However, two properties within walking distance of the Town Square, shopping, Snow King Resort, and shuttle service to whitewater rafting are the Cowboy Village Resort and the Rustic Inn at Jackson Hole. These properties might help you book multiple ‘cabins’ in close proximity, but I suggest you call them directly and speak to a human! (I did note that the Virginian Lodge has availability for those dates. It is fairly close to town proper, the pool is great, and the cafe onsite has one of the best breakfasts in town!)
Another less expensive option might be to consider renting a large home like this Driggs Log Cabin, just ‘over the hill’ in Idaho. We locals call that side the ‘quiet side.’ There are many activities available at Targhee Resort, and there are some very good restaurants in both Driggs and Victor, Idaho. The property I linked above is about a 45-minute drive to Jackson. Closer to Teton Pass is the Teton Valley Resort. This might also be an option and a shorter drive.
I understand Teton Village can get pretty expensive, but that will be your best option for a single house of that size. The drive is shorter, the hikes are amazing, and the nightlife is a lot of fun.

    1. Hi KC!
Great question. That varies from year to year based on the cold snaps at night. Many of the trees are starting to show some color now, but it is always worth watching the weekly temperatures for Jackson.
An advantage to hopping on a flight – or drive if you are able! – right now is the Fall Arts Festival in Jackson, taking place September 3-13. It is an amazing time to take in the galleries and participate in artist receptions and food tasting.

    1. Hi Maggie!

I have several options for you. If you want to be in the thick of action in the town of Jackson, but tucked away in a quaint, slightly off-the-beaten-path location, I would suggest the Inn on The Creek. You are steps away from Flat Creek, which winds its way from the National Elk Refuge along East Gros Ventre Butte and passes by this lovely Bed and Breakfast.
South of town in the Snake River Canyon is the Snake River Sporting Club. Their cabins range in size to accommodate a couple or two couples, to a home that will sleep large parties, whether it is your tribe of friends or several generations of family.
Finally, the Fish Creek Cabin, located at the base of Teton Pass along Fish Creek and close to the town of Wilson is a classic western style cabin that retains a cozy feel with modern amenities.
      Have a blast!

  4. Hi Nelda!
There are so many options in town! One of the older more established motels I think is centrally located is the Antler. While I haven’t been inside lately, they have done a facelift. Owned and operated for many years by a local family. Cowboy Village is a little bit of a walk into the town and town square, but cute individual cabins pretty darn close to everything! Please consider using our link to book your adventures! https://travellemming.com/book/

Reach out to me again if you have questions on specific properties and I will give you the lowdown.
    Happy travels, Morri

  5. This was very helpful as I’m trying to book somewhere to stay for a week ! My husband and I are coming for the first time ! So hearing you say staying in the town would be best was helpful! However places I have looked and consider was not mentioned! Any other suggestions on lodging

  6. We are planning our family trip to Jackson/Grand Teton/Yellowstone this summer and I have found your blog so helpful! I would love to stay a night or two in Jackson (thinking the Virginian, per your recommendation- we have a 10 yr old and 14 yrs old). Do you think it would be best to stay the 3 days we allot to Grand Teton at the Virginian, or move to another hotel inside the park, on our way to Yellowstone? Thanks for any guidance!

    1. Good Morning Ashleigh!
I am so glad my article was helpful. You and your family are sure to have a wonderful time in Jackson Hole. I think the Virginian is a great ‘hub’ for activities in town and into Teton National Park. If you have your three nights booked, consider staying there if family is more shopping and nightlife/restaurant inclined. That being said, if your family is the ‘love the outdoors’ type and likes a bit of rustic and US history, one of the lodges in Teton National Park would be a great experience. It puts you a tiny bit closer to Yellowstone, and the drive north AND an afternoon playing on the beach (rocky but still) of Jackson Lake with the Tetons looming in the distance, is a lovely picnic option. Book soon. The lodges fill fast!!! Have fun and ask away if I can assist further.
