Hamburg made me feel right at home, and I instantly fell in love with its unique neighborhoods. Having explored the city to a T, I’m here to help you decide where to stay in Hamburg.

The Altstadt and Neustadt are the best areas to stay in for first-timers as they harbor most of the main sights. I recommend staying in one of the rooms at The Nikolai Hamburg that look out over the Speicherstadt’s iconic canals.

If you’re looking for a romantic stay, then the hotel we stayed at is the ultimate choice. The Alsterblick Boutique Hotel in Uhlenhorst offers a killer breakfast and cozy rooms.

Hamburg has much more to offer, though, as it’s one of Europe’s largest port towns with a long trading history. Keep reading to discover which of its diverse neighborhoods best suit your travel needs.

Being Germany’s largest port, much of Hamburg’s southern parts are industrial. Which is why you will find most of the neighborhoods worth visiting to the north of the Norderelbe.

These areas fan out from the city center, which comprises the Altstadt and Neustadt. The Binnenalster and Außenalster flank its north and form the heart of the city. Here, you will see locals jogging, picnicking, or walking their dogs.

Altstadt & Neustadt

The location of the Altstadt and Neustadt makes them ideal neighborhoods for first-timers. As they form Hamburg’s center, the rest of the city is easy to reach by foot, bike, or public transport.

But the two areas have plenty to offer as well, especially for those interested in history. The Altstadt dates back to the Bronze Age and was Hamburg’s beating heart during Hanseatic times. When its economy boomed, the Neustadt was built to keep up. The riches these times produced are still found in sights like the Rathaus.

Of all the hotels here, The Nikolai Hamburg is the overall best. Located on the Altstadt and Speicherstadt’s border, you will glimpse the old and new from its waterside rooms. If you plan to stay longer and go on day trips, then the Novotel Hamburg next to Central Station is the best place to stay.

Pros of Staying in Altstadt & Neustadt:

  • The most central location of all neighborhoods
  • Many historical sights and museums
  • Lots of great restaurants and bars

Cons of Staying in Altstadt & Neustadt:

  • Hotels can be pricey
  • Booking ahead of time is necessary due to high demand
  • More touristy than other neighborhoods

The Speicherstadt & Hafencity offer loads of maritime and urban history. The Speicherstadt’s iconic red-brick warehouses date back to the 19th century, and its canals functioned as a free trade zone. The new Hafencity stands in sharp contrast, sporting state-of-the-art architecture and revamped buildings.

Cultured travelers will find their heart’s delight here, with the Elbphilharmonie looking out over the Elbe. Here, you can go to a concert, look out over the river from its observation deck, and even sleep on its upper floors. Book The Westin Hamburg Elbphilharmonie’s Horizon Suite if you want to splurge.

Still want to sleep in Hamburg’s most notable area, but without the hefty price tag? Then stay at 25hours Hotel Hamburg Hafencity.

Pros of Staying in Speicherstadt & Hafencity:

  • Some of the most beautiful hotels can be found here
  • Easy to walk to downtown
  • Impressive architecture and history
  • High-quality restaurants and bars

Cons of Staying in Speicherstadt & Hafencity:

  • The eastern side of Hafencity has fewer dining options and bars
  • Hotels can be pricey and fill up quickly

Hamburg’s underground scene flourishes in St. Pauli, with art shops, galleries, and alternative bars. Unsurprisingly, most tourists know it as the place to go for great nightlife. While the Reeperbahn is most popular, its side streets will get you closer to the local party scene.

Foodies will also find their jam with so many great restaurants amidst the chaos. It has everything you could crave. From fine dining experiences to the local favorite after a night out: the Fischmarkt.

St. Pauli was also where The Beatles came of age, hence the many bars and hotels named after the band. The budget-friendly Pyjama Park St Pauli Hotel und Hostel has rooms covered in photos of the British gents. Stay at east Hotel Hamburg, though, if you prefer the area’s edgy design.

Pros of Staying in St Pauli:

  • Lots of great restaurants and bars
  • Overflowing with art
  • Best place to experience Hamburg’s alternative scene

Cons of Staying in St Pauli:

  • Streets can be loud and rowdy at night
  • You will have to take public transport or a bike to get to downtown

Harvesthude and Eppendorf are the perfect areas for indulging in a little luxury. The 19th-century villas, chic boutiques, and cozy brunch cafes prove that they are two of Hamburg’s most high-end neighborhoods. They also host the most luxurious hotel in the city, the Fontenay Hamburg. Stay here for amazing views of the Außenalster, their fine dining restaurant, and spa.

The areas’ residential nature and green spaces also make them ideal for families. Although both areas have many apartments for rent, the best one is von Deska Townhouses – Ivy House. Not only is it the coziest hotel, but they also offer extra beds for children up to 14 years old.

If you’re looking for a romantic stay, look no further than Uhlenhorst. This area borders the eastern shore of the Außenalster, where sailboats and ducks float by. Additionally, its green paths lined with weeping willows and historical villas make for a perfect moonlit stroll.

As Uhlenhorst is residential, its quiet streets will make couples feel like the only two people on the planet. Stay at the Alsterblick Boutique Hotel like we did, for its cute rooms and phenomenal breakfast.

The Apartment040 is a great pick if you want more privacy. Be aware that Uhlenhorst is farther from the main sights than other areas. So, pick a hotel that is close to public transport or the StadtRAD bikes.

Pros of Staying in Uhlenhorst:

  • Lots of greenery and water
  • Quiet and residential neighborhood

  • Almost no attractions, museums, or sights around

Sternschanze is Hamburg’s former working-class area, and its edge can still be found today. Apart from St. Pauli, it’s the place to look for alternative bars, nightlife, and shops. But where the first can be overwhelming, Sternschanze feels more relaxed.

Most of the area’s bars surround the cultural center Rote Flora and Flora-Park. Check out their program, which offers fun activities like cooking classes and raves.

Pick Superbude Hamburg if you want to book a hotel with that same edgy vibe. Those looking for a more serene environment will be better off at one of August The Boardinghouse’s apartments.

Pros of Staying in Sternschanze:

  • Lots of great restaurants and bars
  • Great public transport options
  • Offers a buzzing nightlife scene

Cons of Staying in Sternschanze:

👉 Best Area For Budget & LGBTQIA+ Travelers | ✨ Best St. Georg Hotels: CAB20Hotel City HouseAparthotel alsterSuite

Affordable hotels are hard to find in one of Germany’s most expensive cities. But with its budget-friendly hotels, St. Georg is the exception. Book one of CAB20’s sleeping pods for a luxurious yet low-cost stay.

St. Georg is also the best area for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Gay bars line its main street, the Lange Reihe, and you can find many open-minded spaces that will make you feel safe.

The reason we loved St. Georg so much, however, was because of its multicultural scene. With so many cuisines clustered in one place, great restaurants are found on every corner. We visited the Yemen Restaurant, where we tried Yemeni food for the first time and fell head over heels for it.

Pros of Staying in St. Georg:

  • Easy to walk to downtown
  • Lots of great restaurants and bars
  • LGBTQIA+ friendly spaces
  • Some affordable accommodation options

Cons of Staying in St. Georg:

  • Can be noisy due to nightlife in the area
  • Lots of traffic

Visit Berlin Next

While there are plenty of things to do in Hamburg itself, a two-hour train ride will take you to Germany’s capital: Berlin. Hamburg’s rawer twin is a must-visit if you love history, art, and alternative vibes. If you decide to go, take a couple of days, as the city is too big to explore in a day.

Rent a Bike through StadtRAD

As a Dutchie, I find the bicycle the best mode of transportation and exploration. Hamburg’s municipality and the Deutsche Bahn have made this super easy with their 3,900+ StadtRAD bikes. Renting one is simple: just download their app and scan the QR code to unlock the bike.

Go on a Day Trip to Lübeck

View of the entrance of Museum Holstentor

Lübeck is another Hanseatic city and Hamburg’s Northern neighbor. As the city was meant to house the Allied forces’ headquarters at the end of WWII, it was never bombed. Which is why its stunning medieval center still stands. You can get there in 50 minutes by train, making it the perfect city for a day trip.

Stay Close to a StadtRAD Parking Space

Besides being a fun activity, StadtRAD is a lot quicker than public transport in Hamburg. To make your trip as convenient as possible, stay close to one of their parking spaces to always have a bike at hand.

Visit in the Summer

People enjoying at the restaurant patio on a

Hamburg is a popular shoulder season destination. But during summer, the city lights up with local life. There are fewer tourists around, and with everyone being outside, it is a lot easier to meet new people. Book a room with AC, though, as it can get hot.
