5 Best Neighborhoods & Areas to Stay in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, and it’s surrounded by waterways. The city center is sandwiched between a long canal to the west and the Inderhavnen harbor to the east. Copenhagen’s neighborhoods border this central area. Below, I detail the top five neighborhoods for visitors, with hotel recommendations and mini guides for each area.

Indre By

Indre By is the city center of Copenhagen and the best place to stay for first-time visitors. This is where you’ll find most of the city’s museums, attractions, and notable streets including the iconic Nyhavn street (pictured above) with its colorful buildings along the canal. Not to mention, Indre By is extremely walkable and bikeable.

My top overall hotel recommendation, Copenhagen Admiral Hotel, is located here. It’s only a 3-minute walk to Nyhavn and less than 10 minutes to the nearest Metro station. Plus, it sits right on the harbor and many of the rooms have sea views. 

Looking to stay right on Nyhavn street? Check out Hotel Bethel which overlooks the beautiful canal. And if you’re on the hunt for a boutique hotel, look no further than 25hours Hotel Indre By with its eclectic, whimsical design. Plus, it’s in a great location.

Østerbro

Østerbro is located northwest of Indre By and it’s the perfect neighborhood for families and those who want a more laid-back, local vibe. This is where I stayed during my trip and I enjoyed the calm atmosphere. 

There are tons of cute and cozy cafes, bars, and restaurants to pop into. Plus, you’ll find a huge park that’s perfect for families with kids. In general, Copenhagen is super safe, but I felt especially safe in Østerbro.

Families will love Rye115 Hotel for its coziness and family-friendly atmosphere. It has family rooms and is super close to the Metro for easy access to the city center.

For families or those wanting access to a kitchenette during their stay, Charlottehaven has apartment-style suites that include a washing machine, too. The hotel is located right on the harbor and is very close to a Metro station.

There are a ton of vacation rentals around Østerbro as well.

Nørrebro

Nørrebro is an all-around cool neighborhood. It’s an awesome place to stay for budget travelers and foodies because there’s a diverse range of dining options for every budget and cuisine. General prices tend to be a little lower, too.

You can expect tons of unique stores, vintage shops, cafes, and restaurants. There’s a vibrant buzz to Nørrebro and it’s super multicultural. I recommend checking out the shops along the main thoroughfare, Nørrebrogade. Then, pop into different side streets to discover more.

Nørrebro is located on the western side of the canal from Indre By and just south of Østerbro. The neighborhood doesn’t have a ton of hotels, but Hotel Nora Copenhagen is a good one. It has an awesome location for exploring Nørrebro and you can easily reach the city center.

Numa Aparthotel is an apartment-style hotel with units that could work for solo travelers as well as couples and families of three. It’s located on the northern edge of the neighborhood. 

Aside from hotels, be sure to check out vacation rentals in Nørrebro as well.

Christianshavn

The neighborhood of Christianshavn is twofold. On the one hand, Christianshavn sits adjacent to Copenhagen’s infamous commune, Freetown Christiania. This self-governing community has stirred controversy over the years but from my experience, Christiania is what you’d expect out of a commune. It’s free-spirited and unsurprisingly nonconformist. 

On the other hand, Christianshavn is located amongst numerous canals with beautiful and colorful homes. Many streets here are charming and picturesque, and there are lots of little cafes and shops to venture into. There’s also a beautiful nature preserve nearby called Christianshavns Vold. 

You can’t stay within the bounds of Freetown Christiania because it’s technically separate from Copenhagen. However, you can stay in other areas around Christianshavn. You’ll enjoy a mix of classic Copenhagen charm and Christiania’s bohemian vibes. You’ll also be within easy walking/biking distance of the city center. 

NH Collection Copenhagen is a highly-rated modern hotel in Christianshavn with tons of amenities and conveniences. It has a gym, a restaurant, rooftop bar, family-rooms, and breakfast is available.

On the other hand, if the unorthodox vibe of Christiania appeals to you, you might like the hotel-boat, Hotel CPH Living. If you want something a little more in the middle, the boutique-style Kanalhuset looks charming.

Vesterbro

Copenhagen isn’t the biggest nightlife city. However, Vesterbro is the place to go if you want to experience the bar and club scene, as well as a really local-feeling neighborhood.

Kødbyen is the former meatpacking district in Vesterbro and when the sun goes down, this area is a hub for local bars and clubs. During the day, I recommend aimlessly wandering the streets to discover cute boutiques, unique stores selling local goods, and cafes. The food scene in Vesterbro is fantastic, too.

Vesterbro offers a mix of hotel options. My top picks for a budget hotel (CityHub Copenhagen) and a luxury hotel (Villa Copenhagen) are located here. However, book a stay at Scandic Kødbyen if you want to be close to the nightlife at Kødbyen. 

Lastly, Vesterbro is close to the central train station, Kobenhavns Hovedbanegard, which is ideal for taking day trips.

Tips for Staying in Copenhagen

Pay Attention to Signage on Trains and Buses

The public transportation situation in Copenhagen is by no means complicated. However, I noticed that Metro trains weren’t marked super clearly except for on the front. Pay attention to make sure you’re getting on the right train. 

Additionally, there was a Metro stop closure during my visit. An alternate bus route was serviced but the re-route wasn’t super clear on Google Maps. Just be sure to pay a little extra attention when riding public transport. 

Rent a Bike to Get Around

Biking is one of the best ways to explore and get around Copenhagen. There are protected bike lanes all across the city and you can rent bikes from several companies. I rented through Donkey Republic and found the experience to be pretty simple. 

Pack Layers

Copenhagen is located pretty far north, so the climate might be a little different than what most people are used to. The winter season is known to be cold and the summer (when I visited) is pretty mild and pleasant. 

Pack layers, especially if you visit in the summer. Temperatures can range in the 60s and 70s but if the sun is out, it can feel intense — almost like it’s in the 80s. Bring a mix of layers so you can be prepared. 

Prepare to Spend Some Money

It’s no secret that Copenhagen is an expensive city. Think of it akin to New York City prices and budget accordingly. For example, a coffee costs anywhere from $6 to $9. Be on the lookout for things like student discounts if that applies to you, and it helps to split up certain costs if you’re traveling as a group.

Explore the Holmen Neighborhood

The Holmen neighborhood is located just north of Christianshavn. This was one of my favorite areas because it’s home to some seriously unique spots worth checking out. 

Namely, La Banchina (a restaurant where you can swim, sunbathe, and even use a sauna), Lille (a fantastic bakery), Copenhagen Contemporary (an amazing interactive art center), and Reffen (an outdoor international food market).

I’d include Holmen as an entire area to stay if I could. However, it’s a former industrial area that’s still undergoing transformation and there aren’t many accommodations. Be sure to check it out during your visit!

You Probably Won’t Need Cash

Unlike many countries in Europe, you can get around using only a credit card in Copenhagen. I visited for 10 days and used my card for everything without a problem.
