As a long time Atlanta local and street photographer, I know the city well and am here to help you decide what area is the best fit for your upcoming stay.

If you are new to Atlanta, stay in Midtown for its central location, close proximity to museums and attractions, public transit, walkability, and the wide range of shopping, dining, nightlife, and green spaces.

Here, Loews Atlanta is a beautiful hotel with wonderful amenities. It’s located in the heart of Midtown on Peachtree Street within walking distance of museums, attractions, bars and restaurants, and Piedmont Park. You can also easily access public transit.

Westin Peachtree Plaza is another top choice if you want a central location. This Downtown Atlanta hotel is home to the Sundial Restaurant, Bar, and View, and is family and pet friendly.

Want to check out a different area of Atlanta? Buckhead is great for luxury shopping and dining, whereas Old Fourth Ward is perfect for more local experiences. Whatever your interests or reason for visiting, Atlanta has a wide range of neighborhoods with something for everyone.

Let’s dig in and take a closer look at the many neighborhoods to stay in when visiting Atlanta.

Midtown

👉 Best Area For First-Time Visitors | ✨ Best Midtown Hotels: Loews Atlanta HotelKimpton Shane AtlantaHotel GranadaMoxy Atlanta MidtownFour Seasons Hotel Atlanta

Midtown offers the best of Atlanta as it’s centrally located and convenient to just about everything. You can walk to attractions like the Fox Theatre, High Museum, Woodruff Arts Center, MODA, Colony Square, and Piedmont Park.

The best hotel for first-timers is Loews Atlanta Hotel, right on Peachtree Street in the “Midtown Mile.” This lively district is lined with modern skyscrapers full of restaurants, shops, and museums. Piedmont Park is a short walk as well, making this an ideal location for all kinds of visitors.

There are so many other excellent hotels in Midtown, but I have a few favorites for different kinds of travelers:

Kimpton Shane Atlanta is perfect for foodies and pet lovers as it is a wonderful boutique hotel with no pet fee, an excellent bar & restaurant, and a complimentary daily happy hour from 5 to 6 pm.

Moxy Atlanta Midtown is perfect for young adults seeking a trendy nightlife atmosphere. Hotel Granada is a hidden gem as it offers a smaller, more intimate feel in an historic building with a warmer, boutique vibe.

Luxury travelers will love the Four Seasons for its impeccable reputation for excellence.

Outstanding restaurants, shopping, and nightlife define Midtown as a highly desirable area. Public transportation is accessible from Midtown, making it easy to hop on MARTA and quickly head to other areas like Downtown or Buckhead.

Pros of Staying in Midtown Neighborhood:

  • Fun, walkable area
  • Lots of restaurants & bars
  • Museums and attractions
  • Close to public transportation
  • LGBTQ+ friendly

Cons of Staying in Midtown Neighborhood:

  • Street parking is limited
  • Can be expensive

👉 Best Area For Attractions, Events, & Business | ✨ Best Downtown Hotels: Westin Peachtree PlazaThe Candler Hotel Atlanta, Curio Collection by HiltonW Atlanta DowntownReverb by Hard Rock Atlanta DowntownThe Ritz-Carlton Atlanta

Downtown is Atlanta’s main business district, where you will find most of the major tourist attractions, along with some of the best hotels.

Centennial Olympic Park acts as the glue that binds it all together, making it enjoyable and easy to get from one major attraction to the next through the beautifully manicured green space.

Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, National Center for Civil and Human Rights, College Football Hall of Fame, and the Ferris wheel all surround the park, which includes a fountain of Olympic Rings for cooling off on hot summer days.

The best overall place to stay in Downtown, especially for first-timers, is the Westin Peachtree Plaza. The circular glass tower is an attraction itself featuring the Sundial Restaurant, Bar, and View on the 72nd & 73rd floors where you can see 360º panoramic views of the entire city, all the way to Stone Mountain. The hotel is family and pet-friendly, so all are welcome for a memorable stay at the Westin.

Those seeking a more historic aesthetic while enjoying a central location should book a stay at The Candler Hotel Atlanta. It’s a wonderfully renovated, historically important building in the city. Completed in 1906, the building was designed in the Beaux Arts style to include the most opulent sculptural details. The restaurant, By George, on the main floor, is a highlight in the Downtown Atlanta dining scene.

Other notable Downtown hotels include: The W Hotel Downtown, a bit closer to Midtown, featuring a beautiful rooftop pool with stunning city views. Reverb by Hard Rock is the perfect choice for those wanting to stay close to the action at Mercedes Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena.

The Ritz-Carlton Atlanta, closer to Peachtree Center, is a reliable go-to for luxury travelers.

Pros of Staying in Downtown Neighborhood:

  • Close to major attractions
  • Lots of hotels to choose from
  • Great access to public transportation

Cons of Staying in Downtown Neighborhood:

  • Things may be closed on weekends
  • Street parking is limited, decks can be expensive
  • Homeless presence
  • Some may feel unsafe walking at night

Buckhead

👉 Best Area For Luxury & Shopping | ✨ Best Buckhead Hotels: Kimpton Sylvan Hotel Buckhead AtlantaWaldorf Astoria Atlanta BuckheadAC Hotel by Marriott Atlanta Buckhead at Phipps Plaza

Located north of Midtown and Downtown, Buckhead is a bit removed from the main tourism attractions. But it has its own appeal and reputation for luxury and status, as it is commonly referred to as the “Beverly Hills of the South.”

You will find luxury shopping, dining, and accommodations, and a more upscale vibe. Between Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza, you will find high-end retail brands like Jimmy Choo, Tiffany’s, Louis Vuitton, Apple, Rolex, Saint Laurent… the list goes on.

Buckhead offers some of the best restaurants, nightlife, and shopping in the city. Some highlights are Tomo for the best sushi, Delbar for Middle Eastern, and Le Bilboquet has classic French cuisine. The Garden Room is a perfect date night – dripping with flowers, it’s stupidly romantic.

Looking for longtime local staples? Try Atlanta Fishmarket for its fresh seafood and huge, iconic copper fish sculpture outside the building. Bones is a traditional, high-end steakhouse that never disappoints.

Music fans will love catching a show at the Buckhead Theatre, just be sure to dress to impress. Havana Nightclub is a great spot for dancing, or, you can escape to the 1980s at Johnny’s Hideaway.

My top hotel choice in Buckhead is Kimpton Sylvan Hotel for its boutique charm, rooftop bar with sweeping city views, lush garden patio, and unique outdoor pool that has a tropical resort feel. The restaurant is wonderful and they offer a complimentary happy hour daily and pets stay for free.

For over-the-top opulence and luxury, especially for romantic couples, I recommend Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead

Meanwhile, families will enjoy the more moderately priced, sleek modern design of AC Hotel by Marriott Atlanta Buckhead at Phipps Plaza, which is perfect for kids since it’s close to the Lego Discovery Center and Sloomoo, as well as the movie theater and other shops and restaurants at Phipps.

There are two MARTA Stations in Buckhead. Lenox on the Gold Line and Buckhead on the Red Line, both run North/South with direct service to the airport.

Pros of Staying in Buckhead Neighborhood:

  • Close to luxury shopping & dining
  • Upscale, beautiful area of the city
  • Accessible to MARTA Red & Gold Lines

Cons of Staying in Buckhead Neighborhood:

  • Not as close to main attractions
  • Can be expensive

Old Fourth Ward

👉 Best Area For Local Vibes & Foodies | ✨ Best Old Fourth Ward Hotels: Hotel Clermont Atlanta, by OliverFORTH Hotel Atlantavoco The Darwin – Atlanta Midtown by IHG

Old Fourth Ward (also known as “O4W”) is a perfect choice for travelers seeking a more local experience while remaining close to main attractions. Just east of Downtown, O4W is one of Atlanta’s most sought-after neighborhoods for its close proximity to Downtown, Midtown, and other popular neighborhoods.

O4W is most known for being the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the site of the King Center, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and Sweet Auburn. Other popular attractions include the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail, Ponce City Market, Krog Street Tunnel, Krog Market, Edgewood Ave bar district, and Historic Fourth Ward Park and Skatepark.

My top choice for living like a local in O4W is Hotel Clermont Atlanta, by Oliver, for its savvy-chic boutique vibe and rooftop deck with city views. It’s home to the Michelin restaurant, Tiny Lou’s, and the infamous Clermont Lounge, a dive bar/strip club around back in the basement. Plus, you can walk to some of the best and most affordable local food in the city.

For those who want to get closer to the new shiny things along the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail, FORTH Hotel Atlanta is an oasis wedged between the Beltline and Historic Old Fourth Ward Park. This sleek, modern hotel has a beautiful pool, elegant rooftop lounge with city views, and luxury dining at Il Premio. Plus, all that urban grittiness of Ponce de Leon Ave is just minutes away.

For a different experience, try voco The Darwin – Atlanta Midtown. It’s closer to Boulevard & North Ave., which isn’t as nice of a walking area. However, it’s not far from many local favorite restaurants.

Old Fourth Ward is also a great area to stay in a vacation rental if you are looking for a more local experience and sense of community.

Pros of Staying in Old Fourth Ward Neighborhood:

  • Lots of local restaurants, bars, and shops
  • More casual, local neighborhood vibe
  • Convenient to many connecting neighborhoods via The Atlanta Beltline
  • Close to main attractions via public transit or a quick Uber/Lyft

Cons of Staying in Old Fourth Ward  Neighborhood:

  • Not as many hotel options, as it’s more residential

Atlantic Station

Pedestrian bridge over the lake at Foundry Park in Atlantic Station

👉 Best Area For Families & Proximity to Attractions | ✨ Best Atlantic Station Hotels: Twelve Midtown, Autograph CollectionEmbassy Suites by Hilton Atlanta MidtownKimpton Shane Hotel

Atlantic Station is a family-friendly shopping district just west of Midtown. You’ll find an AMC Theatre, various sweets shops and kid-approved retail, along with a walkable, nicely paved streetscape and plenty of restaurants. It’s not as connected to main public transit, but there is a complimentary shuttle to Atlantic Station from MARTA Arts Center Station that runs from 5 am to 12 am daily.

The park here hosts seasonal events and festivals throughout the year, including outdoor film screenings called “Screen on the Green” and an ice skating rink in the winter. When in town, Cirque du Soleil performs in Atlantic Station, and the Center for Puppetry Arts is a short walk away.

Twelve Midtown, Autograph Collection is a luxury boutique hotel and the best choice for families. It’s located at the heart of Atlantic Station and offers one or two bedroom suites for a more comfortable stay, along with sweeping panoramic skyline views of the city.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Atlanta Midtown is a bit more budget-friendly and has free breakfast. Kimpton Shane Hotel is just across the 17th Street bridge in Midtown and is another great choice for close proximity to Atlantic Station as well as attractions in Midtown like the High Museum and Woodruff Arts Center.

Pros of Staying in Atlantic Station Neighborhood:

  • Clean, safe, and walkable streetscapes
  • Close to attractions
  • Lots of dining and shopping options
  • Concierge service at Atlantic Station has lots of amenities

Cons of Staying in Atlantic Station Neighborhood:

  • Not as convenient to public transit
  • Can be expensive

Decatur

👉 Best Area For Families, Healthcare Workers, Students, & Patients | ✨ Best Decatur Hotels: Hampton Inn & Suites Atlanta Decatur/EmoryCourtyard Atlanta Decatur Downtown/EmoryResidence Inn by Marriott Decatur Emory Area

Technically, Decatur is a city, not a neighborhood. But its close proximity to Downtown Atlanta makes it a perfect destination for those seeking a quieter, small-town feel while still being somewhat close to Atlanta’s attractions and easily accessible via public transportation.

Decatur is also close to Emory Healthcare, Emory University, and the CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This makes it a good choice for traveling healthcare professionals, students, or patients. Although Decatur is farther from most main attractions, Fernbank Museum is close by and is fun for the whole family.

Decatur Square in Downtown Decatur is the center of all the action. It’s where the courthouse sits among a nicely manicured green space and gazebo that often hosts community festivals and events. There are also restaurants, bars, and shops that make this a family-friendly place to explore and unwind.

You will find Eddie’s Attic on the far side of the Square, a small and intimate music venue that draws musicians and fans from all over the world to experience its incredible acoustics. Notable dining includes White Bull, Leon’s, and Cafe Alsace. There’s also the family-friendly Brick Store Pub with its insane list of imported beers from all over the world. Further down Ponce de Ave are local favorites like Farm Burger, Chai Pani Indian Street Food, and Dancing Goats Coffee.

MARTA, the city’s main public transit system, has a station right in Decatur Square so it’s perfectly convenient to come and go from Five Points MARTA Station in Downtown Atlanta on the Blue Line (West/East). Traveling to and from the Airport, you would switch trains at Five Points MARTA Station to/from the Red or Gold Lines (North/South).

Hampton Inn & Suites is my top choice for families here because of its excellent location close to the Square and complimentary hot breakfast, which will save you on dining. Courtyard Atlanta Decatur is just next door and comparably similar, but you will pay for breakfast in their restaurant.

Residence Inn by Marriott Decatur Emory Area is not as close to the Square but it’s a nice, new hotel with a modern, upscale vibe. It’s also convenient to Suburban Plaza Shopping Center for shopping and dining, as well as Whole Foods and Wal-Mart.

Pros of Staying in Decatur Neighborhood:

  • Quieter, small town feel
  • Close to Fernbank Museum
  • Close to Emory and CDC
  • Lots of beautiful parks, trails and greenspaces
  • Public transit is convenient to Downtown Decatur

Cons of Staying in Decatur Neighborhood:

  • Not as close to main attractions
  • You may need a car to get around beyond Downtown Decatur

Cumberland

👉 Best Area For Sports Fans, Families, & Outdoor Adventurers | ✨ Best Cumberland Hotels: Omni Hotel at the Battery AtlantaDoubletree Suites by Hilton at The Battery AtlantaAloft Atlanta at The Battery AtlantaEven Hotel Atlanta – Cobb Galleria by IHG

Cumberland is located in Cobb County, about 10 miles northwest of Atlanta. This is the best area for those traveling to Atlanta to see a Braves game, or families looking for a more laid back, suburban setting. Outdoor adventurers will also appreciate the nearby Chattahoochee River for tubing and kayaking.

Truist Park & The Battery is the largest attraction in Cumberland. Home to the Atlanta Braves, this enormous entertainment hub has shopping, dining, nightlife, concerts, and events.

Sports fans will want to stay at the Omni Hotel at the Battery Atlanta. It’s the official hotel of the Atlanta Braves, offering luxury accommodations and behind-the-scenes stadium tours.

Families may find a more affordable stay at Doubletree Suites by Hilton at The Battery Atlanta, which still remains close to the action. Meanwhile, Aloft Atlanta at The Battery Atlanta is perfect for couples or young adults looking for a modern, trendy nightclub-like atmosphere.

For outdoors adventures and health conscious travelers, I suggest Even Hotel Atlanta – Cobb Galleria by IHG. The hotel features fitness amenities and healthy food options, and the Chattahoochee River is close by.

Lastly, I have a local restaurant recommendation: Rays on the River. It’s a local standout for its upscale outdoor dining that is perfect for romantic dates and special occasions. Expect an elegant take on Southern seafood and views of the Chattahoochee River.

Pros of Staying in Cumberland Neighborhood:

  • Close to Truist Park & The Battery
  • Family friendly
  • Plenty of shopping and restaurants
  • Close to Chattahoochee River and outdoor activities

Cons of Staying in Cumberland Neighborhood:

  • Far from main attractions
  • You will need a car to get around
  • Not as accessible for public transportation

Dunwoody

👉 Best Area For Business Travelers | ✨ Best Dunwoody Hotels: Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia by IHGAtlanta Marriott Perimeter CenterHyatt Place Atlanta / Perimeter Center

Technically, Dunwoody is a city just north of Atlanta. However, it’s a popular area and major business district, as many corporations have established headquarters here. It’s the perfect location for business travelers who are looking to stay close to the office and aren’t as concerned with being near attractions. This area is quite residential, so families and those traveling with kids will feel right at home.

My top hotel choice for business travelers is Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia by IHG for its close proximity to MARTA and Perimeter Mall. Plus, it has a laid-back atmosphere, quality dining and drinks, and a beautiful outdoor patio with lush greenery. And, there are walking trails for some much needed decompression after a long day at the office.

Book a stay at Hyatt Place Atlanta / Perimeter Center if you’re looking for modern flair. They offer free breakfast, which is a bonus for families. Atlanta Marriott Perimeter Center is another excellent choice in a great location.

Perimeter Mall is the go-to destination for shopping and dining in Dunwoody. Café Intermezzo, The Capital Grille, and Eclipse di Luna are all great dining choices.

There are lots of parks and green spaces in the area and some pretty cool outdoor attractions. Check out Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area for tubing and kayaking, or Treetop Quest Dunwoody at Brook Run Park for aerial obstacle courses.

Dunwoody MARTA Station is on the red line that runs north/south from the airport, but you will likely want to rent a car to get around.

Local Tip: Food & Wine magazine named the NFA Burger “the best burger in Georgia.” Discreetly located in a gas station, this unassuming casual burger joint is worth checking out if you’re in the area.

Pros of Staying in Dunwoody Neighborhood:

  • Close to businesses
  • Safe, clean, and affordable
  • Family-friendly
  • Accessible to public transit on the Red Line

Cons of Staying in Dunwoody Neighborhood:

  • Far from main attractions
  • You may need to rent a car to get around more easily

Hapeville

👉 Best Area Close to the Airport | ✨ Best Hapeville Hotels: Kimpton Overland Hotel – Atlanta Airport by IHGHilton Atlanta AirportEmbassy Suites By Hilton Atlanta Airport NorthHoliday Inn Express & Suites Atlanta Airport NE – Hapeville by IHG

Looking to stay close to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport? Hapeville is an adorable little town with a quiet, historic Main Street that is lined with local businesses, shops, and restaurants. And, it has a strong arts community.

Attractions include the Porsche Experience Center, The Original Chick-Fil-A Dwarf House, Delta Flight Museum, and Hapeville Depot Museum.

Fans of Guy Fieri should check out the local restaurant, FokArt, which was featured on Season 23, Episode 3 of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Another Atlanta favorite is Corner Tavern for its neighborhood bar vibe with better than average bar food. It has multiple locations around the city.

The best place to stay in Hapeville is Kimpton Overland Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel with a quality restaurant and bar, and daily complimentary happy hour from 5 – 6 pm. Plus, you can bring your pets at no extra charge. It’s just next door to Porsche Experience Center, so you can get a front row seat to all the high-velocity action on the tracks, as airplanes wiz by overhead.

Embassy Suites and Hilton Atlanta Airport are great options with similar amenities, without being as close to the Porsche Experience Center. Holiday Inn Express & Suites is a more mainstream, affordable option for those on a budget.

Pros of Staying in Hapeville Neighborhood:

  • Close to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport
  • Walkable, pedestrian-friendly streetscape

Cons of Staying in Hapeville Neighborhood:

  • Far from main attractions
  • Lots of noise due to airplane traffic overhead

Tips for Staying in Atlanta

Take Notice of Which Peachtree Street You’re Actually on

Perspective view of the buildings on Peachtree Street
Looking up at the buildings on Peachtree Street in Downtown Atlanta

There are over 70 streets in Atlanta including the name “Peachtree.” This can be a bit confusing for locals and tourists alike.

The important thing to know is the main drag that connects Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead — the 3 biggest areas for tourism and attractions in the city — is Peachtree Street. Once you enter Buckhead, it changes to Peachtree Road (which isn’t confusing at all, LOL).

Anyway, just pay close attention to where you are and where you’re going, and notice the subtle difference between Peachtree Street, West Peachtree Street, and Peachtree Center Ave.

Get to Know MARTA, Atlanta’s Imperfect Public Transit System

View of the people on the platform and the MARTA train passing through
MARTA train passing through as pedestrians wait on the platform

I’ll be honest: MARTA has its problems and needs some major upgrades to serve metro area residents better in daily life. But it’s actually pretty efficient for getting to major attractions. And it’s simple in comparison to other train systems which have much more complicated lines.

The main thing to know about MARTA is the lines run North/South (Red & Gold) and East/West (Blue & Green). They intersect in the heart of Downtown at Five Points Station, which is where you would need to go to change lines from North/South to East/West. Once you’re going in the right direction, you want to look at the map to see what color line you need to take or if it even matters. But for the most part, it’s pretty basic.

The biggest drawback to MARTA is the wait times, as the trains don’t run as frequently as in other major cities. So, compare that to the traffic you would encounter by car (or the hurdles of walking/biking/whatever) and decide which is less of a hassle.

The Atlanta Streetcar was Designed for Tourism

View of the Atlanta Streetcar moving through Downtown on Auburn Aven
The Atlanta Streetcar moving through Downtown on Auburn Aven

If you are visiting Atlanta’s main attractions in the Downtown area, the Atlanta Streetcar is an excellent way to get around quickly. The fares are really affordable, too, only $1 for one-way and $3 for 24 hours, so you can ride as many times as you want all day for only $3!

Getting around via the Atlanta Streetcar is especially easy if you want to venture out from the core area near Centennial Olympic Park into the Sweet Auburn, Edgewood Ave, and Historic King District on the east side.

You could leave from Centennial Olympic Park (or another stop in Downtown) and head to Municipal Market in Sweet Auburn for lunch. Then, hop back on to the bar district in Edgewood Ave or at the King Center (which is a short walk to Jackson Street Bridge), explore that area and head back Downtown anytime.

It’s a short loop that many Atlantans don’t appreciate ( I personally ride it often), but it’s designed for connecting the main tourist attractions, so it’s perfect for visitors!

Get CityPASS, it’s an Awesome Bargain!

If you plan on visiting more than one of Atlanta’s major attractions, costs can add up quickly.

Atlanta CityPASS combines six main attractions into one affordable price for significant overall savings. Attractions include the World of Coca-Cola, Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, College Football Hall of Fame, and National Center for Civil and Human Rights

  1. I love your suggestions!
Family of five traveling to the US from Norway this summer. Last stop will be Atlanta, or close by. Love the style of Hotel Clermont but no pool which is a must for the kids. Can you suggest something with such a southern style? We have 4 nights for one or two stops. Never been to the area before, so probably a lot to experience.

    1. Hi Karin, Thanks so much for reading! I totally get your delimma with the pool and I have a couple of suggestions for you, depending on what area you might prefer to spend time in. Since you mentioned the Hotel Clermont it looks like you might want to be close to the Ponce de Leon, Old Fourth Ward, Downtown and Midtown, which is a great area! Check out FORTH Hotel Atlanta which is a great location in Old Fourth Ward, as it sits along the Atlanta Beltline Eastside trail and has walkable access to everything along the beltline, as well as Ponce City Market and is still very close to all the action on Ponce. It’s a lovely, new, modern hotel with a very nice rooftop pool and lots to do for the whole family that is very walkable and pedestrian-friendly. It’s not as convenient to public transit (MARTA) but it’s a short Uber/Lyft into Downtown or Midtown so you would not need a car. My favorite pool personally is W Atlanta Downtown because it has jaw-dropping views of the city and is conveniently located right in Downtown with very close proximity to Midtown and public transit (MARTA). The pool may be a little smaller than some and the kids may not care about the view? It’s definitely an urban setting tho, so depending on your kids ages, you might not want to be that immersed in the city. Another great option that I like a lot is Kimpton Sylvan Hotel Buckhead Atlanta. I love their tropical, resort feel out by the pool (on the ground) and they have one of the best rooftop views in the city and really great food in the restaurant there. Buckhead is a little north of the main attractions in Midtown and Downtown, and I might suggest renting a car in that area, but you could also take Uber/Lyft and get around just fine. If you haven’t already, please check out my other article on Best things to Do In Atlanta and that might help you figure out what area you would want to stay in while you’re here. I hope this is helpful info for you in planning your upcoming trip to Atlanta and I hope you have a great time in the city!

  2. Hello! Your article is very helpful in trying to plan a visit to Atlanta. My family of two college children and husband will be visiting during the hottest month first week of August. We will be there for two nights. Based on your article we would like to stay in Midtown. Do you recommend the Twelve Midtown? Also we are planning on going to a bb game and the Coca Cola museum (based on my reading this is a must). Thank you again for this article !

    1. Hi Georgeanne, thanks so much for reading! I do recommend Twelve Midtown if you’re looking to stay closer to Atlantic Station, which is a shopping/retail district at the edge of Midtown. Depending on how you would like to experience the city, I might consider something more central in the heart of Midtown for better proximity and walkability, as well as access to MARTA (public transit) if those things matter to you. You can easily of course take a car service like Uber or Lyft to get around to the places of interest. Considering you have adult children, you might want to be closer to Midtown attractions right outside your door, without having to get a car, walk across the 17th street bridge or deal with the shuttle service. I absolutely adore the Kimpton Shane Midtown (which is close to Atlantic Station) but it’s technically within the more walkable Midtown neighborhood and has much easier access to MARTA. Loew’s on Peachtree St is my personal, hands-down favorite for best location, but based on your selection for Twelve Midtown, I am guessing there is a reason you are not looking at that hotel? Anyway, I hope this is helpful for planning your trip and I hope you and your family have a wonderful time in Atlanta this summer!

  3. Hi! I’m going to Atlanta for the first time, (I’ll be driving) to an MMA event in Alpharetta. Is that a safe area to stay at and walk around?

  4. Good day, your article was very helpful. I am hoping for your assistance. My husband and I are from South Africa and will be coming to Atlanta on the 2 May and leave the 5 May, for my son’s graduation.
Could you suggest some places to stay and I am hoping to attend a jazz show or two whilst we are in Atlanta
We are still undecided of whether to rent a car, or use Uber, etc.

Looking forward to your reply and recommendations.
    Thanks
    DK

    1. Hi DK,
Thanks so much for reading and congrats in advance to your son on his upcoming graduation! For a short stay and the best experience all around, I highly recommend Midtown for all the reasons cited in this article.
My best overall hotel recommendation is Loews Atlanta on Peachtree. It’s a beautiful hotel that is walking distance of so many attractions, dining, nightlife, as well as Piedmont Park. It’s also very near MARTA (public transportation) so you would not need a car to get around to major attractions. You can also easily get an Uber/Lyft to things you may want to visit that aren’t as accessible via MARTA.
If you want to stay closer to things like the Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola, Ferris Wheel, etc iyou may want to consider Downtown. I love the Westin Peachtree Plaza for the stunning views from the top floor and its central location offers great access to MARTA and the Atlanta Streetcar.
The Atlanta Jazz Festival is in the latter part of May, so you will just miss it, however in anticipation of that very large event, there should be no shortage of live jazz across the city in many music venues. The High Museum also hosts Jazz nights on the 3rd Friday of every month, but again that won’t not coincide with your visit. Here’s a short list live music venues in Atlanta you can look into:.
Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, Blind Willies, Apache Cafe, Kat’s Cafe, Northside Tavern, Venkman’s, Red Light Cafe, The Loft, Aisle 5.
I hope all this helps and you can also check out my article on Things to do in Atlanta for other reco’s and local favorites: https://travellemming.com/things-to-do-in-atlanta/
I hope your family has a wonderful trip to Atlanta in the spring, it’s absolutely the most beautiful times of year to visit.

  5. Thanks for a very comprehensive and logical guide to Atlanta. If only all guides and trip sites had this level of logic and advice!
We are coming to Atlanta from London in late March 2026. Only staying for 3 nights before heading down to Florida. Husband and wife two kids 1 year old and 9 year old, the grandmother will be there too. We will have a car the entire time we are there . I am undecided between a hotel in midtown and one of the hotels in the perimeter Sandy springs/ Dunwoody area( crown plaza Ravinia) . The cost difference is pretty much double in midtown. Around 1000 bucks more total.
Im considering the crowne plaza and just driving to midtown and Buckhead for day activities such as Pedimont Park, the aquarium , etc. my wife wants to hit a couple of malls while there likely Lenox and Mall of Georgia. We are making a short visit to Norcross on Sunday morning. Myself and the 9 year old also have tickets to a Hawks game on the Saturday night ( will drive it or uber it or maybe even the metro on the way there and uber back) aside from those planned events we just want a nice hotel to catch up with the time difference, eat good food and hit nice restuarants, maybe some miniature gol, we like the cheesecake factory so want to go there at least once, see some nice parks and walks and generally enjoy our 3 full days there. You think the crowne plaza could be a good idea to save 1000 bucks and just do the driving to what we want to see? Seems only around 20 mins drive to midtown. Cant see us ever going to downtown apart from the Saturday night Hawks game. Any advice or feedback would be welcomed. Thanks !!!

    1. Hi Al, thank you so much for reading, I am so glad you found the article helpful! I visited London for the first time about this time last year and I loved it so very much! I hope you and your family have a wonderful trip to Atlanta this March! Be on the lookout for early blooms in and around Atlanta, widely known as “The City of Trees”. March is such a lovey time of year here, especially when the daffodils are in bloom, they are all around the city as part of the Daffodil Project, as well as many other beautiful spring blooms.
I would definitely recommend the Crowne Plaza Ravinia over the more expensive hotels in Midtown for your particular trip and family dynamics. Considering the ages of your young children, the fact that you will have a car and the things you have planned to do, you could not have landed on a better choice for your trip! There are a few notable tips I can offer to help you get the most out of your stay and avoid some headaches along the way.
As mentioned in the article, Perimeter Dunwoody is a bit removed from the city center, so it is great that you will have a car! Planning your adventures and deciding when to take the car vs. when to opt for public transit is going to be the big factor in this area.
This may be where my personal bias comes into the equation, but as a resident for 3 decades living in close proximity to Downtown, I personally consider Perimeter Dunwoody one of the most horrendous traffic congested areas in the city. It’s not a deal breaker though if you plan your day right and avoid the rush hour traffic, specifically evening rush hour on the Interstates going south (towards the city) is especially brutal. I know this well as it was at one time my daily commute. The great news is that you will be really close to shopping and dining at Perimeter Mall! Additionally, the Buckhead neighborhood where the 2 biggest shopping malls are (Lenox and Phipps Plaza) is a short distance by car so you can easily drive there and parking is free and easy at both of these shopping complexes. The Mall of Georgia will be a short road trip, but since it’s north of the city you will have an easier time getting there from Dunwoody than you would have in if you were staying further south in Midtown. My biggest tip for these little car excursions is to get out (and get back) as early in the day as possible. I like to plan my car trips across different areas of the city between 10am – 2pm or after 7pm. You should be fine driving around in your general area on local streets at all hours, but if you plan to take a drive into another part of town that requires interstates/highways, prepare for traffic delays.
Navigating by car gets more tricky for your adventures closer to Downtown and Midtown, due to traffic congestion to and from your home base at Perimeter Dunwoody, as well as the added expense and dilemma for finding parking in these areas. The Perimeter Dunwoody MARTA station is very nearby the Crowne Plaza Ravinia and unlike many of the train stations in the Downtown/Midtown/Buckhead areas, daily parking there is free! I am pretty sure the hotel also offers a complimentary shuttle to the train station so either way, you are much better off just taking the red line on MARTA into the city and skipping the headache and stress of getting stuck in Atlanta traffic and having a meltdown with a small child during gridlock. One exception to this rule (if you plan it right), I do highly recommend driving up/down Peachtree Street to get acquainted with the city. It’s a fun drive with lot’s of sights and easy stops along the way if you can avoid that rush hour. Read more about Peachtree Street and lot’s of other fun attractions in my Best Things To Do in Atlanta Article
For the Hawks game, you may find that suggested travel directions will send you from Dunwoody to Five Points MARTA station, which is a short walk but there is also a MARTA station at State Farm Arena (GWCC), but it’s on a different train line, so it does make logistical sense to just walk from Five Points. Here’s the rub, some find walking in Downtown, especially near Five Points MARTA station to be a bit unsavory at night. I am very comfortable personally and I could confidently navigate the walking route with ease. Since you will be with your 9 year old daughter and are unfamiliar with the city, I would recommend changing trains to the blue line and going one stop to GWCC which puts you right at the venue with minimal walking. If Google Maps (or other map tool) doesn’t offer this route, use MARTA’s trip planner on their website for accurate directions and train times.
Sorry if this was a bit long, but I hope it helps you get the most out of your short time in the city. Happy Holidays and I hope your upcoming trip to Atlanta is a memorable one!

    2. Thanks so much for the information. Its very practical and useful.
I will consider the traffic and avoid rush hour times.
Sounds like the red line metro could be a great idea for the Hawks game. Are the metros generally safe ? As in the people who ride them? In London they are generally safe with the odd homeless person or beggars on them. I will consider whether or not to change to the blue line for one stop, its never bothered me seeing homelessness ans i dont mind my 9 year old son to see it, rather than shelter him from it ! There will be crowds i suspect on game day.
I booked the crowne. It wasnt worth the 1100 dollars to stay in midtown as its a close commute.
Yes March weather seems to be pleasant and the trees should be in bloom!

      1. Hey Al, the trains are generally safe and the ridership is pretty diverse. Depending on the time/day there may not even be that many people on the train, it just really depends. Sounds like you are comfortable in large cities, so I would say use your street smarts here. Be sure you are aware of your surroundings and you should be fine. I hope you enjoy your trip to Atlanta!

  6. Hello. It’s 11/19/25 but I am coming to see Jesse Welles in February of 2026 ..but I am 76, driving my Beetle to Atlanta from Orlando. I don’t walk well for great distances anymore. . I was wondering if there any places to stay for 2 nights near the Eastern venue that might offer a courtesy bus to and from the Eastern…I am also not super wealthy..do you have any suggestions or am I in a fantasy world. Much thanks. Peace

    1. Hi Gail, thanks so much for reading! This is a tough question you pose, as the venue is located in a neighborhood of Atlanta where you will not find any hotel inventory. You might try looking for a VRBO or Airbnb where you can stay nearby, park your car and either walk or take an Uber to the venue. While you can find some good hotel rates in both midtown and downtown Atlanta, parking your car would be an added expense and that might drive up the cost for your overall visit. The further you go from the city center, you’ll start to find lower nightly rates and complimentary or lower cost parking options, but you will have to figure out the transportation to and from the venue if you don’t drive your own car. This is a smaller venue, so I think it’s unlikely a hotel will have a shuttle for this specific venue/event but you would need to contact the hotel directly to find that out.
I would recommend reviewing the neighborhoods in this article to figure out where you would enjoy spending your time apart from this one event, and look for an affordable option in that area and just take an Uber/Lyft to the show. Best of luck in your search for an affordable place that meets your needs and I hope you have a wonderful time at the show and visiting Atlanta!

  7. hello what about near the loft center stage atlanta? im bringing my daughter and her girlfriend there for a concert. they are both 18. trying g to figure out where to stay. the concert starts at 8pm su day the 19th. thank you!

    1. Hi Holly, Thanks so much for reading! Sounds like you have a fun trip to Atlanta planned and the Loft is a great music venue in the heart of the city. Without knowing more details about your criteria for choosing a hotel beyond location, you can’t get any closer than Kimpton Shane Midtown or Hotel Granada (both mentioned in the article). They are very close to the Loft (within 1-2 blocks) and either would be a very comfortable and enjoyable stay for your trip, as they are in walking distance to not only your venue but all that Midtown has to offer and perfectly situated close to public transportation (MARTA) so can easily get around to other parts of Atlanta without needing a car. I hope this is helpful for your trip planning, and if there is anything else I can help with to narrow your search, just let me know as I am happy to help.
