15 Items That Help Me Pack a Light Carry-On (and Avoid Baggage Fees)

Updated June 26, 2026

Few things ruin the start of a trip more than surprise baggage fees or (even worse) lost luggage. That’s why I almost always travel with a carry-on. To me, this peace of mind is entirely worth having fewer items — but if you pack smart, you don’t have to sacrifice all that much.

Even to international destinations, my lightweight packing method has allowed me to travel comfortably and stress-free. But the bag I use makes all the difference. Read on to discover the most spacious carry-on pack on the market, how to dress smart, the hacks I use to save space, and much more.

15 of My Favorite Finds for Packing Light

Carry-On Travel Backpack

Our Pick

Tortuga 40L Travel Backpack Lite

Fully maximize your carry-on capacity with this comfortable, durable, and waterproof pack made entirely from recycled materials.

There are many great travel backpacks on the market. But there’s one bag that our editors swear by, especially when it comes to maximizing capacity: the Tortuga Travel Backpack

It meets domestic and international carry-on requirements, yet its minimalist design provides so much storage space. This durable pack is also made entirely from recycled materials and is even waterproof, ensuring your few precious items stay protected. A height-adjustable back panel and breathable straps also ensure comfort, even on those long-haul travel days.

Packing Cubes

Our Pick

3-Pack Tortuga Packing Cubes

Tuck and roll a surprising amount of clothing into these three mesh-topped packing cubes, which fit perfectly into the Tortuga carry-on.

There are all kinds of tips when it comes to shrinking down your pile of clothing: fold and roll, cram items into empty space, maybe even use vacuum bags

My personal preference? I love the simplicity and complementary design of Tortuga Packing Cubes. Two small cubes and one large are sold as a set, and they fit perfectly into my recommended carry-on pack. Mesh top panels make it easy to see what’s inside, and after many uses, my compact cubes have continued to hold up.

Personal Item Day Pack

Our Pick
N/A
Osprey Daylite Commuter Backpack

When it comes to daypacks, you won’t find a better value than this lightweight model that suits both urban and outdoor adventures.

You’ll manage to pack a whole lot with the two above product recs. But once your bag is stored away in the overhead bin, it’s a pain to lug that thing down.

Pack a personal item for those in-flight needs — and I mean one that just barely passes the box test, like the Osprey Daylight. You’ll appreciate its extra space after you buy a couple of souvenirs. Not to mention, this backpack is ultra-versatile. Store away your laptop in its protective sleeve or even wear this breathable pack while hiking.

All-Purpose Tote

Our Pick
N/A
Nanobag Ultralight Foldable Tote

Expand this pocket-size tote whenever you need it, from the beach to the farmers market or wherever your trip takes you.

Fold it down small in seconds. Dress it up or down. Made from durable nylon, this Nanobag Tote can do it all without demanding much space.

While this tote comes in a range of styles, I recommend buying a solid color that will go with just about anything. Skip packing a bulky purse and plan to carry this around town instead. It’ll also come in handy for groceries, as many destinations don’t offer single-use bags these days.

Versatile Sandals

Our Pick
N/A
Teva Women’s W Original Universal Sport Sandal

Walk from town to the beach and even up hiking trails in these lightweight, comfortable shoes that take up little space in your carry-on.

Noticing a theme? When packing a carry-on, you want most of your items to serve more than one purpose. The Teva Universal Sport Sandals are no exception (and they come in a men’s version, too).

You can wear these shoes for just about any occasion: walking city streets, water activities, on the beach, and even moderate hikes. The rubber sole provides a great amount of traction, and adjustable straps allow for a custom fit. Plus, these lightweight sandals are made from recycled materials, and we love supporting an eco-conscious brand.

Merino Short Sleeve T-Shirt

Our Pick
N/A
Smartwool Active Ultralite Short Sleeve

Even after multiple wears, this sustainable brand’s odor-wicking merino wool tee stays fresh.

You can judge me, but I’m absolutely an outfit repeater on vacation — and yes, I’ll even wear the same unwashed T-shirt a few times. But here’s the thing: No material stays fresh after multiple wears like merino wool.

This super fabric is odor-resistant, moisture-wicking, and quick to biodegrade. The Merino Short Sleeve from Smartwool can even be recycled and is made from regenerative materials. Here’s a link to the men’s version of the tee.

Merino Long Sleeve T-Shirt

Our Pick

Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Crew

Include this merino wool long sleeve in your capsule wardrobe to ensure comfort on chilly days.

I’ll say it again: I love merino wool and especially the sustainable apparel crafted by Smartwool. More than likely, this Classic Base Layer should also be part of your carry-on capsule wardrobe. Wear it again and again whenever the weather turns a bit chilly.

While there are lots of flashy patterns to choose from, I suggest going with a solid neutral color that will match with just about anything. The men’s version has simple shades in stock, too.

Ultralight Insulated Jacket

Our Pick

Mammut Rime Light IN Flex Hooded Jacket

Stay warm and dry in this lightweight insulated jacket that easily fits into any day pack.

From northern destinations to alpine retreats, coolcations are one of the biggest travel trends right now. However, packing for colder weather often demands bulk — but it doesn’t have to.

Since most of my travels take me to the mountains, my Mammut Rime Light Jacket is a carry-on staple. This warm outer layer is well insulated, but packs down super small. You’ll have no problem stuffing it or the men’s version into a day pack. Plus, this jacket is on the upper end of water-resistant. I’ve worn it in serious storms and have always managed to stay dry.

Versatile Pants

Our Pick
The author Abigail Bliss, wearing a wide leg pants with her friend on a mountain
Toad&Co Taj Hemp Wide Leg Pants

These comfortable, every-occasion pants feel like linen but are made from more sustainable hemp fabric.

Sure, jeans may be versatile. But they’re going to take up a good amount of space in your pack. Instead, opt for a lightweight pair like these Wide Leg Pants from Toad&Co. Their sustainable hemp fabric is so comfortable and breathable.

With neutral colors and a relaxed fit, these pants can be worn for both casual and more dressy occasions. I also love the stretchy waistband because when I’m traveling, dining out is always on the agenda.

Lightweight Dress

Our Pick
N/A
Toad&Co. Sunkissed Maxi Dress

From the beach to that trendy new restaurant, this practical and effortlessly chic dress is a must for any summer vacation.

Every capsule wardrobe needs a going-out look, and this Toad&Co. Sunkissed Maxi Dress is exactly it. Effortlessly chic, yet comfortable. Practical with quick-dry, wrinkle-resistant fabric. This dress even has UPF 50+ protection, so it’s a no-brainer if you’re packing for a beach getaway.

Toad&Co. also uses recycled fabrics, is a 1% for the Planet member, and is a certified B Corp. I’m totally a believer in buying fewer, more eco-friendly clothing items. They might cost a bit more, but they’re made to last.

Wrinkle Release Spray

Our Pick
N/A
Downy Wrinkle Release Spray w/ Bonus Bounce Spray

After you unload your packing cubes, mist your clothing with this spray and watch the wrinkles disappear like magic.

You rolled, tucked, and, with the help of packing cubes, successfully zipped up your carry-on. But when you unpack at your hotel, you’ll likely discover that your clothes are a bit wrinkled. There’s no way around it, unfortunately. But it can be easy to fix!

I despise ironing like everyone else, which is why I always pack Downy Wrinkle Release Spray. Just mist, and like magic, the creases in your clothing disappear. The dual pack I’ve linked to also comes with a bonus bottle of Bounce odor-eliminating spray so you can get by with wearing your pieces multiple times.

Detergent Packets

Our Pick
N/A
Tide Travel Sink Packets

Wash clothing easily and at your convenience with these single-use detergent packets.

Bear in mind, odor-eliminating spray and merino wool have their limits. If you plan to travel for more than a week, I highly recommend packing a few Tide Travel Sink Packets

Of course, use the laundry machines at your accommodations if you’re so lucky. But these packets are great because they work wherever you’re staying. Use them at your convenience in your hotel room or hostel, and definitely add them to your list of camping essentials

Toiletry Container Set

Our Pick
N/A
10-Piece Cosywell Travel Bottles for Toiletries

Pack your preferred products into these refillable, leak-proof containers which come in a clear, TSA-approved bag.

Whether you’re on a budget or simply trying to make greener choices, these Cosywell Travel Bottles are a solid pick. Sure, brands’ travel-size toiletries are cute and convenient. But refillable containers like these limit waste and allow you to pack your preferred products.

I especially like this ten-piece kit because three bottles feature shampoo, conditioner, and body wash labels (I’m sure you’ve struggled to remember which is which, too). I’ll usually fill the fourth bottle with sunscreen, the spray bottle with makeup remover, and the tiny containers with skin care products, as well as toothpaste. Toiletries, check!

Dual Hair Styling Tool

Our Pick
N/A
L’ange Hair 2 in 1 Straightener and Curler

Straighten or curl your hair with this dual-purpose styling tool that requires only a small amount of space.

Most accommodations offer a blow-dryer, so leave that bulky item at home. But for me, a hair styling tool is a non-negotiable, especially in humid climates that guarantee frizz.

I love this 2 in 1 Straightener and Curler from L’ange, as it allows for versatile looks and doesn’t take up all that much space in my pack. It’s also designed in a way that limits damage with airflow technology and five heat settings available.

Wireless Earbuds

Our Pick
Aptkdoe Bluetooth Earbuds
Aptkdoe Bluetooth Earbuds

I’ve owned these compact, affordable earbuds for years and still, they deliver a great sound and have a long-lasting battery.

You might prefer them for their bumping sound quality, but skip the chunky headphones if you’re trying to pack light. Instead, stash these Aptkdoe Bluetooth Earbuds into your day pack.

I’ve used this set for countless hours, and it’s still going strong. Various earpiece sizes ensure a comfortable fit, a single charge lasts for days, and the earbuds are waterproof, making them ideal for exercise and outdoor activities. For the price, they really can’t be beat.

4 Tips for Traveling with a Carry-On

Plan Around Weather Predictions

It can get chilly at high elevations, even in the summertime

It might be obvious, but when packing for a trip, look up the weather in your destination (and soon before your departure so you get the most accurate predictions). This insight will help you decide what clothing is and isn’t necessary to pack.

Warm temperatures in the forecast? Skip the bulky sweater. Heading to a desert climate? Maybe a rain jacket isn’t necessary.

Pack a Capsule Wardrobe

With neutrals, earth tones, and lots of basics, just about everything in my closet matches. It’s definitely not a trendy collection, but it makes dressing every day (and packing) ultra-simple.

To make the most of your carry-on space, I recommend putting together a mini capsule wardrobe. A few simple tops and a couple of versatile bottoms in complementary shades, plus a small number of simple accessories, can go a long way — and keep you from wearing the same outfit in every vacation photo.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items on Board

Pull those boots and that chunky sweater out of your carry-on and get dressed. This is what you’re wearing to the airport. Make sure to wear layers so you can pull one or two off mid-flight should you need to.

Even outside the winter months, this rule applies. Wear the floppy beach hat, your hiking shoes, that pair of jeans — whatever’s taking up serious space in your pack.

Have a Minimalist Mindset

Don’t sweat the small stuff when you’re on vacation

It can be tough to decide what to leave behind. But a minimalist approach is the best way to travel with a carry-on.

Along with a simple mix-and-match wardrobe, limit your number of self-care items. Make that one lipstick your signature color for the week. Go without perfume and minimize your skincare routine. Ultimately, just keep asking yourself: Do you really need this to get by?
