My Review

No need to sugarcoat anything here: The Sun Rose blew me away. I am still daydreaming about how I got to go bowling during our stay… like what?! The rooftop pool was perfect, with panoramic city views galore. My meals from both Ospero and Wolfgang Puck’s Merois were fantastic, no notes. And the hospitality was top-notch; they treated me like a queen.

Towering over a bustling curve of the iconic Sunset Boulevard, the Sun Rose is one of the best places to stay in Los Angeles, location and quality-wise.

The Sun Rose has a gorgeous aesthetic — hues of blue and green incorporate sea and sky into every space. I have seldom seen such eye-catching decor. From the jungle-themed upholstery on the rooftop to the seashell chairs in the lobby, every detail is stunning. My boyfriend Michael said it reminded him of the Grand Budapest Hotel… which is obviously awesome.

The same went for our Deluxe Skyline King Room. The deep blue, velvet headboard tied the tones together, creating a calming space to unwind with floor-to-ceiling views of Los Angeles. Though the room was a bit cramped, it flowed and felt bigger than reality. It’s a perfect haven for two people, but I don’t recommend trying to squeeze an extra guest into one room.

The luxury bath and body products by Molton Brown smelled incredible and felt great on my skin. I didn’t even unpack my own toiletries; why bother when you can use spa-grade products? I found the exact scent on Amazon. Thank you, I’ll take 14 of them. Oh, and the water pressure in the walk-in shower was spot-on perfection.

Two private parties were going on during our first night, so we weren’t able to use many of the shared amenities spaces. I recommend calling to confirm nothing is going on when you book — the hotel is a popular host for Hollywood entertainment industry events. However, we had plenty to explore on the Sunset Strip. We enjoyed dinner and an evening walk down the boulevard.

If you want to see a comedy show, The Comedy Store is directly across the street from the Sun Rose. This world-famous venue hosts the biggest names in comedy from around the world every week. Check out the tickets during your visit if you want to have a laugh. I’m bummed I didn’t get to see David Spade and Nikki Glaser the night of my stay!

Michael and I got in a late-night workout in the fully-equipped gym, which offered every single machine and weight imaginable. I typically avoid the gym at hotels, but this one was so swanky that I had to try it. The equipment was so high-quality that I actually enjoyed my time sweating.

We had a fantastic breakfast of biscuits and gravy at Ospero in the morning, the gorgeous cafe on the third floor. Afterwards, we bowled a couple of games in the downstairs bowling alley. Michael and I were giddy. The bowling balls were designed to look like a billiards set! The aesthetic of the whole bottom floor was resplendent. We played ping pong for an hour afterward.

One of the lovely hotel staff members, Carlos, guided us around Live at the Sun Rose, the music venue that used to be the famous House of Blues. The 120-person venue is super intimate and has provided a stage for many of the greatest performers of all time. I felt so lucky to get to see it. Look into tickets during your stay — you might just catch your favorite artist.

If I could recommend the Sun Rose more highly, I would. I never wanted to leave that striking pool deck. The views of both the Hollywood Hills and downtown Los Angeles are insane. Every meal was a 10 out of 10. Having the bowling alley to ourselves was a treat we never expected. And the staff was fantastic on every level.

About the Location

The Sun Rose is located on the Sunset Strip in the heart of West Hollywood. This area is famous for its comedy clubs and music venues. The hotel is the former site of the first House of Blues opened on the West Coast in the early 1990s. It was the Pendry Hotel before rebranding as the Sun Rose in 2025.

I felt totally safe in this location. The Sunset/Kings bus stop is right next to the Sun Rose, but the closest metro station is over 2 miles away, meaning it’s not the best area to utilize public transportation. I’d recommend having a car when staying here.

My Highlights of This Hotel

⭐ Bowling in the 2-lane private bowling alley

⭐ Stunning indoor and outdoor decor

⭐ Dining at Merois and Ospero, both delicious

⭐ Above-and-beyond hospitality

Things to Note

⚠️ The Sun Rose was the original location of the first West Coast House of Blues in 1994, an iconic juke joint/live music venue chain. The hotel’s music ties run deep!

⚠️ Call ahead to ensure no major events will be hosted at the hotel during your stay. Large groups rent out entire floors several times a month, limiting guests’ access to certain amenities.
