I’m going on three years living in Prague and have spent countless weekends exploring the many nearby escapes from the city. I’m constantly amazed by how much Czechia has to offer. But one tiny, Bohemian gem remains at the top of my must-see list: Český Krumlov.

If it’s your first time visiting Český Krumlov, stay in the Inner Town (Vnitřní Město). This neighborhood boasts striking Medieval architecture, bustling restaurants and bars, and most importantly, an unbeatable location within walking distance of all main attractions. It’s also home to my overall hotel pick, Hotel OLDINN

Best Area For Budget Accommodation

Unlike many other historic towns in the region, Český Krumlov was spared the destruction of centuries of wars. Today, it’s one of the world’s best-preserved Medieval towns, built directly into the curves of the Vltava River.

Český Krumlov is the true definition of a small wonder. It’s possible to walk from one end of the town to the other in roughly 20 minutes — so, rest assured that regardless of where you choose to stay, you’ll never be too far from the action.

Despite its size, the town offers numerous accommodation options. First-time visitors and those looking to spend their days meandering through picturesque, cobblestone streets should stay in the city center, comprising the Inner Town (Vnitřní Město) and Latrán neighborhoods.

I’ll start here, and then provide options for other local neighborhoods that are perfect for families and those looking for a quieter, budget-friendly getaway.

Inner Town (Vnitřní Město)

👉 Best Area For First-Time Visitors | ✨ Best Inner Town Hotels: Hotel OLDINNHotel DvorakGarni Hotel Castle BridgeArcadie Hotel & Apartments

Český Krumlov’s Inner Town is the best neighborhood for first-time visitors and those who want to step outside their hotel door straight back in time.

The Inner Town’s labyrinth of narrow, winding streets is perfectly nestled along the Vltava River. Nearly every corner of the neighborhood is lined with stunning Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings with unmatched views of the Český Krumlov Castle perched on the cliff above the city center.

The Inner Town is filled with accommodation options, including two of my top picks. Situated directly in the town’s main square (náměstí Svornosti), Hotel OLDINN is a perfect combination of timeless appeal and modern comfort. During the holiday season, the main square houses the town’s Christmas Market.

If you’re looking to treat yourself to a luxury room with an exceptional castle view, choose Hotel Dvorak. Both options will keep you right in the thick of things and within easy walking distance from main attractions and countless restaurants and bars.

The Inner Town is the most charming area of the city to get lost in. It’s small enough that you need not worry about missing landmarks like the Town Hall and Church of St.Vitus. You’re sure to stumble upon the main attractions as well as plenty of hidden gems as you wander your way through the cobblestone maze. For the most impressive view the Inner Town has to offer, head to the Seminary Garden.

You’ll find no shortage of scenic riverside dining options to choose from. If you’ve had your share of meat-heavy Czech cuisine, I recommend heading to Laibon Vegetarian Restaurant for a change of pace and a gorgeous view.

Inner Town’s evening atmosphere is both cozy and lively. During the summer months, outdoor terraces and balconies like Bar Bridge City Lounge are busy with people enjoying a sunset drink. In the winter, the streets are adorned with festive holiday decorations and light installations.

Pros of Staying in Inner Town Neighborhood:

  • Central and walkable to all main attractions
  • The best of Český Krumlov’s architecture and charm
  • Plenty of restaurants and bars

Cons of Staying in Inner Town Neighborhood:

  • Crowded during peak season
  • Accommodation can be pricey

Latrán

👉 Best Area For Couples | ✨ Best Latrán Hotels: Bellevue HotelOrangerie Garden by KHWellness Pension AmetystPension MONO (Adults Only)

Latrán is Český Krumlov’s oldest and arguably most well-known neighborhood. Its architectural charm is similar to the Inner Town, but its slightly calmer, idyllic vibe makes it the perfect area for couples.

Tucked away under the castle complex, Latrán’s main street is lined with quaint shops, cafes, and bars. The main street extends from Budějovice Gate to Lazebnický Bridge, where it connects to the Inner Town.

Latrán’s real claim to fame is the Český Krumlov Castle and Chateau, which is the second-largest castle complex in Czechia [source]. While you’re exploring the grounds and gardens, be sure to save some energy to climb the 162 steps to the top of the Castle Tower for a truly spectacular view above the entire town.

My personal favorite hotel, the Bellevue Hotel, is the only hotel located under the castle and chateau. Its elegant design, courtyard gardens and terrace, wine cellar, spa, and wellness facilities scream romantic getaway. The hotel is also home to Le Jardin, an intimate fine dining restaurant that’s absolutely worth the splurge.

If you’re looking for something that feels more private, Latrán is filled with homey boutique hotels like Orangerie Garden by KH. Our stay here during a winter snowstorm was the ultimate cozy holiday escape.

Don’t end your stay in Latrán without stopping into Apotheka Cafe Bar for unique craft cocktails inside a restored 14th-century apothecary. If you’re visiting in the summer, enjoy the sun at Bisto Náplavka, a terrace on Latrán’s riverside promenade equipped with a food truck, hammocks, and grassy space to relax.

Pros of Staying in the Latrán Neighborhood:

  • Walkable to all main attractions
  • Beautiful architecture and romantic vibe
  • Plenty of restaurants and bars

Cons of Staying in Latrán Neighborhood:

  • Crowded during peak season
  • Accommodation can be pricey

Horní Brána

👉 Best Area For Families | ✨ Best Horní Brána Hotels: Villa GardenaPenzion KOVÁRNABoutique Hotel Villa BeatikaUltra Premium Apartments

Just up the hill from Inner Town and Latrán, Horní Brána is a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Český Krumlov’s city center. The neighborhood’s quiet atmosphere, paired with an abundance of spacious, affordable guesthouses and pensions, makes it the best area for families.

Villa Gardena and Penzion KOVÁRNA are just two of the many options that offer large family suites and multi-bedroom apartments.

Those looking for a luxury stay shouldn’t overlook this neighborhood either. Horní Brána is a surprising home to my luxury pick, Ultra Premium Apartments. This hidden gem with castle views offers stylish apartments with a private riverside terrace, complete with a jacuzzi. The best part? It’s right next door to Bistro Topinka, one of my favorite spots in Český Krumlov

If there’s one reason to leave the city center for Horní Brána, it’s the views. Its location on the hillside overlooking the town makes for spectacular viewpoints, like the terrace area just steps from the Municipal Theater.

If you’re willing to put a little extra work in for a view, consider the short 30-minute hike from Horní Brána to Křížová hora (Mountain of the Cross). This Baroque chapel and pilgrimage site offers panoramic views of the town and the surrounding area. If you’re visiting during the fall, the colorful foliage is absolutely stunning.

Pros of Staying in Horní Brána Neighborhood:

  • Less crowded and noisy
  • More spacious and affordable accommodation
  • Scenic views overlooking the city center

Cons of Staying in Horní Brána Neighborhood:

  • Further from the city center
  • Few restaurants, bars, and attractions
  • Less lively atmosphere

Plešivec

👉 Best Area For Budget Accommodation | ✨ Best Plešivec Hotels: Vltavská pohádka  • Pension U Hada  •  Hostel Postel • Villa Wurmfeld

Plešivec is the neighborhood for you if you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodation, a local feel, and plenty of green space. It’s a short 10-minute walk across the bridge from the Inner Town, but it provides a welcome escape from the crowds. While it may lack the historic architecture of the city center, its proximity to the riverside and lush park and surroundings brings its own kind of charm.

Plešivec has a range of budget-friendly accommodation — from hotels and pensions like Vltavská pohádka and Pension U Hada, to smaller hostels like Hostel Postel, catered to younger or solo travelers.

Although it is a residential area like Horní Brána, Plešivec has quite a few lesser-known (but worth the visit) attractions located within the neighborhood. I recommend making the time to visit the Český Krumlov Synagogue. Although it’s no longer active, the synagogue features a great exhibition if you’re interested in learning more about the town’s Jewish history up to World War II.

If you’re visiting in the warmer months, enjoy a picnic at the City Park or soak up the sun at the garden house and cafe at the Egon Schiele Art Gallery.

Pros of Staying in Plešivec Neighborhood:

  • More spacious and affordable accommodation
  • Plenty of green spaces
  • Easy walk to the city center

Cons of Staying in Plešivec Neighborhood:

  • Further from the city center
  • A few restaurants and bars
  • Less historic charm

Tips for Staying in Český Krumlov

Visit at Any Time of Year

Overlooking view of Cesky Krumlov during winter
From snowy streets to river rafting
View of the River rafts in Cesky Krumlov
…every season here brings its own adventure.

No matter when you visit Český Krumlov, you’re sure to fall in love. I recommend choosing the time of year that best fits your interests and budget.

Visiting between April to October is best for outdoor activities and enjoying the many nature trails around the city. If you’re visiting during the summer months, keep in mind that many accommodations do not have AC. However, a rafting excursion down the Vltava is the perfect way to cool off! Visiting from late November to early January is perfect if you want to indulge in the holiday spirit.

Prices for accommodation are highest from June to August and during the holiday season.

Consider the Christmas Market

As I just mentioned, Český Krumlov is a year-round destination. However, if you’re looking to experience something truly magical, consider visiting during the holidays. Compared to Prague’s markets, the Český Krumlov Christmas Market feels far cozier. The festive light installations that decorate the city streets are an added bonus.

During our holiday trip, we also took the bus to České Budějovice, a slightly bigger market that was definitely worth visiting.

Make it More Than a Day Trip

Český Krumlov is the most popular day trip from Prague (as it should be!). However, if your itinerary allows you to stay longer, do it.

Experiencing the city in the early morning hours or in the evenings after the crowds dissipate will show you a much more intimate side of the town. Plus, giving yourself an extra day or more will allow you to fit in unique activities like the hike to Křížová hora.

Take Your Time

Author Meera strolling around the Castle gardens in Cesky Krumlov
Frolicking through the castle gardens.

The first time I visited Český Krumlov, I definitely rushed through. During my first visit to the castle, I admired it briefly from the outside, made my way across the Cloak Bridge, and then left. I didn’t even realize I missed so much of what’s tucked away in the rest of the complex, including the theater, riding school, summer mansion, and most importantly, the sprawling royal gardens.

Simply put, when planning your visit, allow yourself ample time to explore.

Add in a Bonus Castle (or Two)

Facade of Hluboká Castle
Hluboká Castle is one of the most beautiful castles in Czechia.

Don’t make the Český Krumlov Castle the only castle you visit on this trip! Czechia has more castles than any other country in Europe, and some say, the world. If your time allows, consider stopping by Hluboká Castle and Rožmberk Castle, both are just over a 30-minute drive from the city center. If you only have time for one, choose Hluboká.

Don’t Miss The Viewpoints

Český Krumlov does not have a bad angle — but don’t leave without hitting the town’s many iconic viewpoints.

Check out this article from the Český Krumlov Region’s official website for an overview of the best spots to take it all in. My personal favorite is the view from the 5th courtyard inside the castle complex.
