We are coming in mid June. I know it will be hot so I was wondering what would be best to do. My husband and I and sons 24 and 22. We are only in phoenix for 3 days before heading to Flagstaff.
Definitely go for indoor activities if you want to avoid the heat! The museums listed in the article are my personal favorites, but there may be some fun pop-ups while you’re there. Check out the Visit Phoenix website to see what’s happening the week of your trip. I hope you guys have a blast! And you’ll love Flagstaff. It’s a great reprieve from the desert heat at this time of year!
I am coming to phoenix in June for 3 days then going to Flagstaff. I’m looking for things to do where 4 adults won’t be in the heat. We love history.
Hi Dana, if you want to stay indoors, I’ve heard the Rosson House Museum in Downtown Phoenix is super cool! It features the history of Phoenix during the Victorian era. Explore the surrounding Heritage Square while you’re there. The nearby Heard Museum and Tovrea Castle are other interesting indoor attractions with unique Phoenix history. If you decide to spend a bit of time outdoors, check out the Native American museums in the Mesa area like S’edav Va’aki and Sce:dagĭ Mu:val Va’aki. While they are half indoor-half-outdoor, you’ll be amazed by how much of the ancestral tribes has been preserved for hundreds of years. I hope this helps, have fun! Betty
Hi Betty,
Can you recommend any other ghost towns or haunted attractions in or near Phoenix/Scottsdale? (Within maybe an hour to 2 hour drive for a ghost town). Hoping to be there in mid-October.
Thanks!
Hi Robin, yes! Jerome is one of the best ghost towns in Arizona, and it’s less than 2 hours north of the city. It’s one of my favorite day trips from Phoenix, and you can continue to beautiful Sedona about 30 minutes northeast if you have time.
I’ve heard the House of Haunts in Scottsdale is lots of fun, but I’ve never been myself. It opens later in October and is free! If you decide to go, please let me know how it is. I love a good haunted house!
Is there areas that are better for birding and seeing wildlife? We are going to be visiting the Phoenix area from May 15 – 20
Hi Al! I am not a birder, but I’ve heard the Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, about 30 minutes east of Phoenix, is a great place to start. If you head south to Tucson, Madera Canyon is a birder’s paradise – I know the Elegant Trogon is a major deal down there. But if you’re sticking to the Phoenix area, I bet you’ll see some action east of the city near the Salt River, Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake, and other Supersition Mountain areas. Apologies for not giving you a direct answer, but best of luck! Betty
will be with a my precocious near 5 year old grandson who resides in phoenix suggestions for places and food please !
Will be there tomorrow until the 21st !
Hi Rena! Definitely take a look at the section of this article regarding things to do with kids! The Arizona Boardwalk includes OdySea Aquarium and Butterfly Wonderland, which are incredible if your grandson loves animals. Otherwise, the Children’s Museum downtown is always a hit. Papago Park is also a great option since it offers the Phoenix Zoo, Botanical Gardens, and great hikes. The February weather is stunning for something like that right now! Check out my list of the best restaurants in Phoenix for food suggestions. You’ll find every kind of cuisine at different price points in Phoenix, so I’m sure you’ll be able to find something you and your grandson love! Enjoy your stay in the Valley – Betty
Is the botanical garden worth visiting in November?
Hi Helen, absolutely. In fact, November is one of the best months to visit the botanical gardens! I remember being bummed about my summer visit because it was so hot, so I planned to return with my family around Thanksgiving.
You’ll get the best of Arizona weather in November, which is essential to a top-tier experience at an outdoor attraction like the DBG. I hope you have the best time. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
Hi, we will be traveling to the Phenix area for a soccer tournament in the beginning of December. Do you have any recommendations for the team’s off day (boys 17-18 years of age)? The coach would prefer nothing strenuous. Thank you in advance!
Hi John, how fun! I recommend going on an easygoing hike in Papago Park or near Granite Mountain since the weather will be perfect at the beginning of December. However, if the boys don’t want to do any physical exertion on their one day off (understandable), I’d suggest exploring the Old Town Scottsdale and Downtown Phoenix areas. Both neighborhoods are packed with things to do, so you’ll have plenty of options no matter the interests. You can explore museums, dine at delicious restaurants, go shopping, and more in these densely populated areas. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best to lead you in the right direction. Cheers! Betty
Hi there ! I’m visiting in December (last week of Dec ). What do you suggest to do ? How warm is it ? I love hiking and kayaking . Is it doable in December ?
Would love to see some interesting places .
Hi Robyn! December is one of the best times to visit phoenix, so you’re golden on the topic of outdoor activities! I’d recommend renting kayaks at nearby Canyon Lake; the high slot sections are really amazing. You can also hike in the Superstition Mountains, which are on the way to Canyon Lake. If you want to stay in Phoenix, kayak on Tempe Town Lake, and check out the easy hikes in beautiful Papago Park. You’re going to have the best time! Be safe and enjoy your time in Phoenix (: Betty
Great info. We are coming to Phoenix in November and want to walk around so what area is the best place to stay?
Thanks
Hi Darlene, great choice on your timing in Phoenix. November is one of the finest months to enjoy the best of AZ hiking and lake days!
The most walkable area in Phoenix is Old Town Scottsdale, in my opinion. There are tons of bars, shops, restaurants, and museums to explore within a one-mile radius. There’s something for everyone in Scottsdale, so your group can easily split to pursue their interests, then conveniently meet back up for dinner on a misted patio somewhere nearby. And it’s only about 15 minutes from the airport! Check out my article on the best places to stay in Phoenix for more details. Enjoy your trip to the Valley (:
Hi,
where can I find a stor that sells native American clotging, arts and hand-crafts?
my dad insists on getting a native American poncho/shal.
thank you for the help,
best wishes,
Bosmat
Hi Bosmat! Old Town Scottsdale offers tons of stores featuring locally-made and ethically-sourced Native American goods. I recommend checking out Native Art Market on Main Street or Wild West Trading Post on Brown Ave (1 minute apart). There are dozens of other galleries and shops selling Native American goods within a couple blocks, so you’ll have plenty to peruse there. Have fun!
Absolutely the best!
Thank you for sharing these awesome adventures around Phoenix. My wife and I will be visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday’s and were looking for things to do with family. Great local insight!
You are so welcome! Thanksgiving is one of the best times to visit Phoenix weather-wise. It’s gonna be hard to pick what to do with such beautiful options! I hope you and your wife have a blast. Let me know what you end up doing in Phoenix, I’d love to hear your stories (:
I’m passing through for 48 hours, and this was exactly what I needed to enjoy my stopover! Thanks so much for cutting to the chase and sharing!
So glad I could point you in the right direction, Sonia! Feel free to share what you did during your brief stay in Phoenix. I’d love to hear about your trip! (:
This is amazing information. Thank you for sharing. I have visited as well 38 countries and feel the same about Phoenix/Scottsdale. Great article.
I’m so glad you appreciated this post, Carolyn! It’s really saying something to know we’ve been all over the world and still think of Phoenix/Arizona as one of the most amazing places on the planet! Happy travels (: Betty
