Queenstown, New Zealand, might just be the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. With captivating mountain peaks, glacial waterways, nearby Great Walks, and stunning summer weather, this picture-perfect destination requires careful planning to ensure you don’t miss out.

Stay bayside at The Waterfront for a luxurious room with a view of sparkling Lake Wakatipu. You’ll be in the heart of downtown, steps from the beach, and in the ideal spot to hit the road to some of the best day trips from Queenstown.

I just spent 3 perfect, jam-packed days in Queenstown, known as the adventure capital of the world. Here’s an itinerary to help you plan your South Island adventure to the fullest, too.

Where to Stay for 3 Days in Queenstown, New Zealand

For a 3-day visit to Queenstown, these are my top picks for where to stay downtown:

Day 1 – Explore Queenstown from the ground and the sky

Morning – Enjoy breakfast and a stroll along the water

Start your day with a coffee and a light breakfast at Beach St. Cafe by the harbour. Get acquainted with the downtown area by strolling along the water, ending in the lush Queenstown Gardens. The lake and mountain views are unbelievable from every direction.

Afternoon – Sink your teeth into famous burgers

You can’t visit Queenstown without dining at Ferburger. You’ll have to wait in line for one of their famous, gourmet burgers, but the wait goes by fast. It’s part of the iconic Fergburger experience that visitors and locals alike have praised for over 20 years.

Evening – Paraglide or climb aboard a helicopter at sunset

Take the last tandem paragliding flight of the day for sunset views over the Wakatipu Valley. Ask for Tugi, my favorite pilot!

OR: If you’re a Lord of the Rings fanatic, take a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter ride to Middle-earth on a Glacier Explorer and Earnslaw Burn helicopter flight. The beauty you’ll experience on this cinematic flight is simply indescribable.

Day 2 – Hike the Remarkables to a glacial lake, then cruise across Lake Wakatipu to a horseback ride at Walter Peak

Morning – Admire mountain views on foot or via gondola

Get up early for a hike in the Remarkables, the mountain range that lives up to its name. Drive to the end of the Remarkables Ski Field Access Road, about 40 minutes from downtown Queenstown. Park at the ski lodge, then hike a moderate 1.4 kilometers to Lake Alta, an aquamarine glacial lake and one of the many LOTR film sites in the area.

Alternatively, take the Skyline Queenstown gondola to Bob’s Peak for panoramic views of the scenery surrounding Queenstown. This is a great option to get incredible views if hiking isn’t up your alley.

Afternoon – Dine and drink along Lake Wakatipu

Return to town for lunch with a view on the patio at Momentos by the Lake. Hang out and explore the nearby shops until the late afternoon. Take a short walk to Queenstown Wharf Bar. Watch the boats come into the harbour over a cocktail and a light snack.

Evening – Sail across the water, then saddle up

Board your cruise and sail across the bay to Walter Peak High Country Farm, where you’ll trek on horseback to breathtaking views of the mountains and lake. This personalized tour is intimate and fitting for all riding levels. Return to town for a late, laidback dinner at Fat Badgers Pizza Bar.

Day 3 – Take a day trip to Glenorchy or Arrowtown, then unwind on the water at Lake Wakatipu

Morning – Take a scenic drive to Glenorchy or sip wine in Arrowtown

Grab a coffee and bagel to-go from Balls & Bangles on the main drag downtown, then continue west to the settlement of Glenorchy. Experience 45 glorious minutes of the most scenic driving of your life. Stop for photos at multiple lookouts along this coastal road featuring mountain peaks and crystal-blue water (and more LOTR film sites!).

Explore the woods and sheep-filled fields around Glenorchy. Don’t leave without a mince pie and local souvenirs from Mrs Woolly’s General Store.

Alternatively, drive northeast 20 minutes inland of Queenstown to Arrowtown. This historic gold rush settlement offers charming shops, boutiques, museums, and wine tasting tours. Opt for this half-day trip over Glenorchy if you want more things to do outside of enjoying the outdoors.

Afternoon – Splash and paddle at Queenstown Bay Beach

Return to Queenstown for an afternoon snack at Marmolada Cafe before making your way to the beach. If you visit during the summer, a day at Queenstown Bay Beach is a must. Take a brisk dip in the lake, or rent a kayak, SUP, or paddleboat from a beach vendor for hours of fun on the water.

Evening – End your trip with a special waterfront dinner

Your final evening in Queenstown is deserving of a special dinner. Reserve a table on the water and enjoy fantastic pasta and seafood at Public Italian Kitchen. Soak in every bit of the views of the majestic peaks and stunning Lake Wakatipu.

End your night with a scoop of ice cream from Patagonia Chocolates, a local favorite. If you prefer gelato, Anita Gelato up the street is heavenly. Wander around the streets of Queenstown until the sun sets. Enjoy every minute of your time well spent in this gem of a town.

How to Get Around in Queenstown

Our dusty rental car carried us safely over many a dirt road

I strongly recommend renting a car in Queenstown so that you can easily access the wonderful day trips to nearby towns like Glenorchy and Arrowtown.

If the idea of driving on the left side is too daunting for you, the downtown area is very walkable, especially if you stay at a hotel by the water like The Waterfront or Crowne Plaza. Uber to farther destinations is not too pricey.

Itinerary Planning Tips

Allow time for your NZeTA to process

You’ll need to get the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) for $17NZD before entering the country. You can apply easily on the website or through their app, but it can take some time to get approved. Make sure to apply a few days before your flight to ensure you can enter.

Visitors must pay the IVL

Your tourist dollars help protect all of this (:

All visiting tourists must pay a $100 NZD International Visitor Levy in addition to the NZeTA fee. At first, I rolled my eyes about this. But when I saw the way New Zealand actually cherishes the land and keeps it so clean and beautiful, I realized it’s worthwhile.

The fee funds biodiversity, conservation, and tourism infrastructure. Keeping the natural New Zealand in shape is a cause I’m happy to back with tourist fees.

Be Prepared to Drive on the Left Side of the Road

A hint of fear in my eyes

New Zealand is a left-hand drive country. Know this before you rent a car and take a few practice laps around a parking lot if you can. I was surprised by how comfortable I felt driving on the left side after only a few miles on the road.

Mark your map with iconic Lord of the Rings (LOTR) film locations

The Amon Hen lookout was skippable according to our LOTR expert, Courtney

There are a handful of very recognizable Lord of the Rings film locations near Queenstown and Glenorchy. Most of them come up right away if you type in “LOTR” on Google Maps.

Do some research before visiting so you can add these sites to your daily itinerary if you’re a Ringer. My friends and I stopped multiple times for the group fanatic to get her fill of cinematic appreciation.

Get a window seat when you fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN)

If there was ever a flight that demanded a window seat, this one is it. The views flying into Queenstown Airport are out of this world. You’ll be in awe before you even touch down on Queenstown soil.
