America’s Founding Fathers stayed here. Bernardo Bertolucci’s infamous Last Tango in Paris took place here. So, just why has the 16th arrondissement been home to such a huge variety of historical and cultural moments? The area’s gorgeous architecture, peaceful streets, and huge green spaces make it an incredibly appealing place to stay.

But is the 16th right for you? It might be if you want access to central Parisian attractions but crave calm and space. You’ll find many fascinating attractions (and tons that will appeal to kids). No matter what, you’ll see why the 16th is a lovely and uniquely diverse arrondissement within Paris.

I’m often in the 16th to visit friends, and I’m always amazed at how peaceful the atmosphere is compared to the single-digit arrondissements. I’m constantly whipping my camera out to take photos of the gorgeous sites, as well! But I’d never go there without a sturdy pair of sneakers.

The 16th also offers an incredible selection of hotels that let you spoil yourself on any budget. My favorite pick in this area is the ultra-luxurious Saint James Paris. Its historic building, library bar, and private garden will take you back in time in the best possible way.

For a different kind of pampering, the 44-room boutique Hôtel L’Ormaie & Spa offers a sauna, swimming pool, hammam, steam room, and fitness room. Not only can you relax in the 16th, but you can do it in style.

And if you’re searching for great views (on a budget), the 16th also has great options. Passy Eiffel, near Trocadéro, offers fabulous views of the Eiffel Tower from certain rooms. Even better? In the off-season, you can find rooms for under 200 euros a night!

Meet the 16th Arrondissement: Paris’s Best District for Families

❤️ Why We Love the 16th: You don’t have to be a snob to find the 16th charming. From its embassies to its boulevards, its parks to its museums, the 16th can feel like a world apart from central Paris. At the same time, you’ll have fairly easy access to central Paris, with the Métro and taxis easily available for transport.

I’m also obsessed with the 16th for the many Paris parks it houses. The Bois de Boulogne, where you can do everything from watch tennis to see great contemporary art, offers gorgeous, wide spaces for walkers. Meanwhile, at the Jardin du Ranelagh, you’ll find playgrounds, flowers, and outdoor workout spaces.

I’d be doing the 16th a disservice if I didn’t mention the wonderful luxury options it offers. You can find some of Paris’s top luxury hotels here, after all. And they tend to offer more peace and relaxation than those in central Paris.

But at the same time, the 16th’s distance from many popular Paris attractions means that you can also get great bargains in a high-end neighborhood. The combination is fascinating!

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Who This Neighborhood Is For: If you love Paris but hate big-city sounds and inconveniences, the 16th just might be for you. You’ll be able to connect to central Paris easily, but you’ll also have a bit more peace and quiet than in many other Parisian arrondissements.

The 16th is also great for families who need a bit more space indoors and more green space outdoors. From playgrounds to amusement parks, sports centers to parks, there are tons of kid-friendly attractions in the area.

Finally, lovers of art and history will find that the 16th is home to some of the best things to do in Paris. From the Fondation Louis Vuitton to Balzac’s home, you can spend days exploring the district’s cultural offerings.

📍 Areas in the 16th: Paris’s arrondissements are all divided into four quarters (quartiers), or neighborhoods. Roughly from north to south, in the 16th, these are:

🚲 Getting Around the 16th: The 16th arrondissement offers a ton of great perks, but transportation isn’t necessarily one of them! While some attractions are near Métro and bus stations, others require fairly long hikes or drives to access. 

Make sure you know the basics of getting around Paris before anything else. And, as you book your hotel, take your transport needs – and its location – into account. Many Métro lines, including the 9, run through the 16th, but may not be close to where you’re staying. Likewise, the 16th has a ton of bus stops, but they’re not necessarily the most dependable.

Of course, getting around the 16th will depend on where you’re staying in the 16th! So where exactly are the best places to stay? Let’s get into it. 

Best Places to Stay in the 16th Arrondissement

Areas to Stay in the 16th Arrondissement

Chaillot

Chaillot is the easternmost quarter of the 16th arrondissement. Stretching from the Seine in the south to the Arc de Triomphe in the northeast and the Bois de Boulogne in the northwest, it’s roughly square-shaped. To the east, you’ll find some of the 8th arrondissement’s most chichi attractions, including Le Galerie Dior.

But Chaillot is also packed full of attractions. From the Eiffel Tower views at Trocadéro to modern art at the Palais de Tokyo, there’s truly something for everyone in this neighborhood. Go to the Avenue Foch for great Arc de Triomphe views from an interesting garden. Or, stroll along the Seine for a classic Parisian experience.

It’s no wonder that Chaillot offers so many top hotels. Searching for luxury? You can’t do better than The Peninsula. This elegant, amenity-filled hotel offers all sorts of room types and perks. For the royal treatment, book the rooftop garden suite. With Eiffel Tower views, you’ll also be able to access a private garden on the rooftop terrace for anything from barbecues to cocktail parties. Très 16ème!

Chaillot is generally a great location to stay in. But for the best possible location, I recommend the Padam Hôtel. Its location offers the peace of the 16th with access to the amenities of central Paris. You’ll be within walking distance of the Seine and the Arc de Triomphe, among many other attractions. But you’ll still get the benefits of the quieter neighborhood.

And if you’re traveling with a family, the Maison Boissière BARNES Residences should be your go-to. This 5-star apartment hotel has been renovated to the highest standard. In the heart of Chaillot, it offers tons of amenities. Even better for families traveling together? It has both 1- and 2-bedroom apartments. The largest have two king beds and a sofa bed, making it a great deal for larger groups.

Porte Dauphine

Just to the west of Chaillot, you’ll find Porte Dauphine. The enormous Bois de Boulogne gardens make up more than half of it, starting on its western edge. To the east, though, you’ll find a residential area. Think lovely Haussmann buildings, luxury stores, and generally peaceful vibes.

This is a great area to stay if you’re interested in the attractions in the “Bois.” The Fondation Louis Vuitton puts on spectacular modern art shows here. At the same time, there’s an equestrian center for horse lovers. There are tiny lakes and pavilions to seek out. The Bois de Boulogne’s attractions alone would make this a luxurious neighborhood.

It’s no wonder, then, that my favorite overall hotel, Saint James Paris, is in the Porte Dauphine area. This luxurious, self-contained property gives a real “country in the city” feel. Close to the Bois de Boulogne, the hotel has its own private garden and terrace. You’ll also find a spa and swimming pool here. What more could you want? 

If you’re searching for an intimate boutique hotel, Porte Dauphine has the perfect choice for you: Hôtel L’Ormaie & Spa. With only 44 rooms, L’Ormaie is known for its incredible staff and great amenities. And for a small hotel, its amenities – including a steam room and swimming pool – are unusual in Paris!

But if you plan on spending more time in the hotel for pampering, choose Brach Paris. In a city full of hotels with great amenities, the Brach outdoes them all. Their fitness club has multiple pools, a sauna, and a hammam. They have their own Clarins Treatment suite. There’s even a barber shop! Group (free) and private (fee-based) fitness classes are also available.

Pros of Staying in the Porte Dauphine Neighborhood:

• Very chic, upmarket architecture
• Great access to the Bois de Boulogne park
• Fascinating attractions
• Great bargains possible if you search!

Cons of Staying in the Porte Dauphine Neighborhood:

• Lodging, food, and other amenities can be expensive
• Public transport links are patchy
• Parts of the Bois de Boulogne can be dangerous at times

La Muette

Southwest of Porte Dauphine, you’ll find La Muette. Primarily residential, there are still plenty of attractions here. Also bordering the Bois de Boulogne to the west, the area is also home to the gorgeous Jardin du Ranelagh park.

There’s a ton to love about La Muette, but my favorite part is its museums. Visit the Maison Balzac to see the writer’s former home. Afterward, sit in the garden with a cool drink and admire the Eiffel Tower views.

Then, head over to the Marmottan Monet museum. Fans of the Impressionist artist can’t miss this: the world’s biggest collection of Claude Monet’s works. And the (former) private mansion that houses them is worth a visit alone!

Nothing says “Paris” like Eiffel Tower views. And that’s just what you’ll find at Passy Eiffel in La Muette. Less than 3,000 feet from Trocadéro, overlooking the Tower, the hotel offers rooms with views of the famous monument. Its quaint yet chic decor is charming, while its staff is friendly and welcoming. Even better? You can find rooms for under 200 euros a night in the off-season.

Pros of Staying in the La Muette Neighborhood:

• Gorgeous Seine views in parts
• Fun parks with activities for kids
• Wonderful museums
• Great historic attractions

Cons of Staying in the La Muette Neighborhood:

• Can feel remote from central Paris
• Not much nightlife
• Lodging can be pricey

Quartier d’Auteuil

👉 Best Area For Bargains | ✨ Best Quartier d’Auteuil Hotels: Queens Boutique Hotel • Hotel Botaniste • Holiday Inn Paris-Auteil

In the southwest corner of the 16th, you’ll find Auteuil. This area is an overlooked gem. And sure, it doesn’t contain as many attractions as its 16th-arrondissement neighbors. But that also makes it both a bargain and a nice glimpse of upscale Parisian life, without being over-the-top.

Another plus? If you’re a sports fan, the Parc de Prince stadium is within walking distance. Roland Garros, home of the French Open, is, too. 

Auteuil is also a great (and reasonably priced) location to stay in if you plan on driving outside of Paris. I’ve picked up numerous rental cars here. The location makes it incredibly easy to bypass a ton of Parisian traffic on your way out of the city.

Unsurprisingly, the best budget hotel in the 16th, Holiday Inn Paris-Auteuil by IHG, is in Auteuil. In the off-season, you can find a room here for well under 200 euros a night. As of this writing, I’m seeing double rooms available in August for 168 euros, including taxes and fees, for single occupancy. The hotel’s incredibly close to transport links, as well. 

Another great hotel with great deals in Auteil is the Hotel Botaniste. With charming décor, a terrace, and a garden, this 4-star hotel has surprisingly affordable rates.

Pros of Staying in the Quartier d’Auteuil Neighborhood:

• Great lodging bargains possible
• Residential feel
• Near the Bois de Bologne
• Near the Parc des Prince (for soccer fans)
• Near Roland Garros (for tennis fans)

Cons of Staying in the Quartier d’Auteuil Neighborhood:

• Near major sporting venues (for non-sports fans)
• Not many major attractions
• Far from central Paris

Tips & Things to Know about the 16th Arrondissement

#1 – Expect to Spend a Little More

The 16th is a gorgeous area, with lots of luxury housing and hotels. Many parts also offer much bigger spaces — inside and out — than you can find in central Paris. Because of this, it’s also an area where prices for groceries, restaurants, and other daily necessities can be a bit higher. 

#2 – The District is Huge

Just because you’re staying in the 16th and traveling somewhere else in the 16th, it doesn’t mean that the trip will be short! The area is enormous and would take a long time to cross on foot from north to south. Plan on walking a lot or finding transportation links near you.

#3 – Check Surroundings Before Booking

The 16th, while generally great for families and quite residential in parts, also has areas that you may find less appealing. For example, the areas near the Parc des Princes football (soccer) stadium may not be a great choice when games are going on, especially if you’re not a fan!

#4 – Identify Your Must-Haves

When you stay in the 16th, you may need to make trade-offs, so know your priorities. Being more central may mean losing some space. Paying less money for lodging may mean staying closer to the edge of the city. Determine what’s most important to you before you begin your hotel search!

#5 – Budget Extra Time and Money for Transport

While lovely and often relaxing, the 16th is also on the western edge of Paris. This means that it can cost more money to get to the center of the city in a taxi or rideshare. No matter what type of transportation you use, you’re likely to need more time than you would when traveling from a more central arrondissement.

#6 – Explore the Bois de Boulogne Carefully

The Bois de Boulogne is gorgeous and has a ton of attractions, but it can be sketchy and even dangerous in certain areas. Stay on marked paths, avoid going after dark (particularly alone), and follow any published guidelines to an attraction.

#7 – Bargains Are Possible

No matter how upscale a district is, there are usually bargains to be found! This is true of the 16th, where you’ll find great deals throughout the district.
