My Review

If you’re a budget traveler wondering where to stay in Venice, then booking a room at Leonardo Royal Hotel is a great option. I stayed here for one night in a Superior Twin Room, and I loved how close it was to both the bus and train stations; it was so easy to get into Old Venice.

But being close to transportation isn’t the only reason to book this hotel. From the moment my mom and I walked in the door, we were greeted with smiles from the check-in staff. And the staff were super friendly throughout our whole stay.

On the topic of food, you should totally add breakfast onto your stay at the Leonardo Royal Hotel. It’s a fairly standard buffet breakfast, but it had a great selection of pastries, meat, cheese, hot options, yogurt, and cereals. There’s even a juice dispenser where you can pick your flavor (big breakfast juice fan, over here).

About the room itself, we were very comfortable during our night’s stay. The room is a decent size for two people, and the bed and pillows are very comfortable. The bathroom was a little bit small and dated, but really, that’s more of a style thing than a functionality thing. The shower got really hot and had great water pressure.

The only real downside to the room was that the walls were very scuffed. You could just tell that people had been setting their luggage down in the same spots for years. It’s something that the hotel could fix so easily, and would make a much better impression on guests. Besides this, the room was very clean!

I also really enjoyed the common lounge areas. On the main floor, there’s a full bar and a restaurant. But besides this, there are conversation pits and plenty of tables to hang out at. This would be a good hotel for a business traveler who needs to take meetings and doesn’t want to hang out in the room the whole time. The WiFi is also very fast.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel to any traveler who doesn’t mind not staying in Venice proper and prioritizes a budget-friendly (but still comfortable!) stay.

Pros & Cons

✔️ Pros

  • Close to transportation terminals
  • Good size rooms with lots of natural light
  • Great breakfast buffet
  • Comfy common areas
  • Friendly service

❌ Cons

  • Lots of scuffs on the walls (the hotel room was otherwise clean, though!)
  • A bit of street noise

About the Location

Honestly, the location is one of the best things about the Leonardo Royal Hotel Mestre. No, the hotel is not set amongst the Venetian canals, BUT, it’s maybe a 10-minute walk to the train station and a 5-minute walk to the bus stop. It’s so easy (and cheap) to get into Venice, so don’t let the location deter you.

Plus, Mestre has some qualities in its own right. It’s more of a “city” than Venice; it has streets and cars and traffic and noise. But it also has a really nice old town filled with locals and families. It also has some great museums, including the M9 museums, and restaurants. The Mestre square is maybe a 20-minute walk from the hotel.

My Highlights of This Hotel

⭐ The location! Despite not being in Venice proper, the hotel is a quick walk from both the bus and train stations. It’s so easy to get around from here.

⭐ The breakfast buffet. I love a good breakfast buffet and this one hit all the marks.

⭐ The common areas. There are plenty of common lounge areas to hang out in and relax, so you don’t have to be cooped up in your room.

⭐ The price. If you’re looking for a more economical stay than you’ll get in Old Venice, you should really consider staying here.

Things to Note

⚠️ If you don’t want to eat at the hotel’s restaurant, there are plenty of places nearby. We grabbed a bite at PASTA & PIZZA e non solo. It was touristy but delicious all the same.
