Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world due to its location and size. It’s one of the few major airports in the central United States and is almost twice the land area of Manhattan Island!
Here’s one of many fun facts about Denver: the city is home to the only international airport in Colorado. DIA has many domestic and international flights (see below for a full list).
If traveling out of one of the smaller airports in Colorado, there’s a good chance you’ll go through Denver before heading to your final destination.

This is the best airport for entering the southern half of Colorado. Plus, sometimes it makes send to drive from Colorado Springs to Denver to get on a plane.
Colorado Springs Airport is much smaller than DIA. Plus, if you’d rather not face the crowds at Denver International Airport, there’s closer, cheaper parking and fewer terminals. Mainly, this airport serves large southwestern cities, including three Texas airports.

Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT)
The largest airport on the Western Slope with direct flights to the West and Midwest.

Grand Junction Regional Airport offers direct flights to the Western side of the state, convenient for access to southwestern cities and mountain towns in Colorado.
If you’re headed on a longer trip, you’ll likely go through Denver or a bigger airport first. Though small, Grand Junction Regional Airport has a gift shop and restaurant if you need a bite before you travel.

Thanks to mountains on all sides and its steep approach, Aspen-Pitkin County Airport is considered one of the United States’ more dangerous airports. Still, during the winter season, this mountain region airport comes alive!
It’s located just ten minutes from downtown and even less from some of the best ski resorts in Colorado. You’ll find non-stop flights to California and Chicago, plus a flight to Denver in case you need the services of a larger airport.

Thanks to Vail and Beaver Creek Resorts, 80% of Eagle County Regional Airport operations happen during the wintertime, one of the best times to visit Vail. Three airlines allow visitors to fly from around the country for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities. While summer flights are fewer, visitors still enjoy heading to Vail for lots of outdoor activities.

The Durango-La Plata County Airport is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Durango. If you’re visiting the town, you’ll want to rent a car or have another plan for transportation. The flight into this airport is an interesting one because you approach through a canyon, making for a truly southwestern Colorado experience.

If you want to visit Mesa Verde National Park, this is the attraction’s closest airport. You’ll still want a car, especially if you’d like to see other nearby sites like Durango and Silverton. A small, local airline provides service to Denver and Phoenix.

Although this airport is busier in winter than summer, you’ll find plenty to do in Crested Butte and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park year-round. You’ll most likely fly to Denver for longer flights, but you can also get to Texas from here via three airlines.

Montrose is a large airport that mostly serves Telluride, despite being about 65 miles away. Due to ski tourists, it’s another airport that sees a lot more traffic in winter than in summer. However, they do have two year-round destinations as well.

Telluride’s airport is the highest-elevation commercial airport in the country. Also, along with Aspen, this airport is considered one of the most dangerous. Thanks to 1,000-foot cliffs at both ends of the runway, and winds in winter, the landings here are well-known. Telluride has flights to Denver and Phoenix, where you can connect with other flights around the world.
